  1. I don't really start scouting till april, looking in cut cornfields, and listing from a few select spots I can cover 2 to 4 known roosting areas and hear any new or changes. A week before morning scouting confirming roost areas and narrowing them down, no calling and if possible a few long range observations with bios to check beards , tail fans, and or spurs!!
  2. I use steps sticks and rails depending what tree I am going in...you don't want to be screwing steps into a hickory or oak. They are my favorite to use in spruce pine and hemlock, Cranford magnums are my favorite, the key to keeping the pin from bending is to screw them in all the way so back of step lays flat against the tree. I always remove steps, sticks and rails from the woods every year... the straps deteriorate in sunlight. I spend enough money on stands and ways to get up to them,I want them to last as long as possible and they are easy to check on the ground every year before they are put back up.. for you guys that leave stand s and sticks up every year I pray for you all the time.. to many things can happen no matter how well you check them in the tree every year....

    Our own survey

That is down from our normal 10 doe,bit we decided to cut back ad the neighbor had family hunting now and they have been taking doe last 2 years 5 on average, so to keep pop the same we cut back to 5 ( target number) as they seem to take 5 every year as well.
  4. He should contact dec, get.permit, and register with town to discharge firearms. I have friends with nursery in no discharge towns in wny and he got permit and shoots 10 to 15 a year.

    8 hunters 10 buck 4 doe 9w.
  6. For the cover you describe, the choice is white spruce.. it can tolerate some shade, if you were to plant norway you would loose a lot to shade.,white pine will be eaten and rubbed by buck and it does not retain lower limbs as it grows.. which eliminates all other pine, thermal cover requires low limbs. Your desire to not do a plantation planting also pushes toward white spruce . As for having brush and Grass grow under them thermal cover would dissappear. Clumps of 5 to 7 trees 10 ft apart perhaps mixed with oak or beach would be the best planting.
  7. Well, my 3rd oldest nephew turns 12 so he will be going but my brother will be taking him, I'll be looking. For another youth to take...
  8. The furthest I've killed a animal with a muzzleloader is 257 yards , it was a woodchuck, and it was an educated guess on drop and windage. Not even sure where it was hot as a .58 cal mini doesn't leave much, it was a body shot as head was intact. I have shot this gun at 300 yards at metal clang er many times and can hit a 20 in circle 2 of 3 x with the open leaf sights. But the barrel is 40 inches long as well.
  9. Still running windows 98... worKS for what I use it for
  10. Back in the early 80s a video was made by whitetail visions called tricking whitetail bucks, lots of good ideas and they do a rake ,or till method in the woods as well well before the food plot craze took off, they had a whole series of tips and techniques series if you can find it you'll learn more than you can watching and reading the last 5 years of tv shows stuff on nowadays, stand placement, making crossings, all covered in detail with little or no expense, best thin is no commercials and product endorsements .... they didn't exist back then!!
  11. Ask for a payment plan, buy it yourself.. or start looking elsewhere...
  12. I agree proficiency with said weapon and right load is key, the thing is I know 95% of all the hunters I know are not proficient, as thay only pick up the gun 1 to 3 weeks before season and nay only put 1 to 5 rounds throught the gun and it's good enough, The problem arises when someone who is post he killed something with a certain cal gun so everyone assumes it's fine to take one out cause a friend if my 3 rd. Cousin 2x removed killed a 250 lb with it at 1000 yards and it dropped in it s tracks.... (no mention that said shooter is a trained long range sniper and highly decorated ever enters the story...
  13. some of these places you don't have Internet or a phone you talk by cb radio to the next guy closer to civilization and he call the cops for you... the Internet and cell phone doesn't solve this problem
  14. The best way is to spray and kill off weed in,late summer, seed March and less compitition and seed has more chance with less compitition
  15. He knows I flintknapp, and reference is to the knapp in at Letchworth every year.
  16. Test holes.you have me.scared as its not far from where springs pop out on neighbors = shale...not good, will leak . I have 3 pond the digging is the easy part but do not make any area shallow ( give kids/grandkids life preservers) get some pond ( mud)crayfish and fat head minnows to start.. don't stock your big fish right away a 1/2 acre pond can only support 100 lbs of fish whether it's 1 fish that weighs 100 lbs or 100 1 lb fish, stocking in proper numbers is critical to avoid over crowding and stunting. Species are important as well depending on what depth and temp pond maintains.
  17. I have several friends who hunt in rural yards. 2.5 acre lots, they do quite well and are welcomed by the land owners because the deer eat all their landscaping. 1 guy has gotten 6 doe and a beautiful 9pt in 3 years.
  18. Well I've seen them out,the ice is all slushy from the melt. But Case and Cuba lake are both fishable... well for some I'll still wait a bit
  19. There have been several deaths from Ill fitting harnesses from hanging, cutting off circulation. As to the original post I would take down the stand, inspect for any.broken split or damage, then put back up and spend the money on replacement straps, (most are only uv rate for 3 years.. ) and though they look good they can and will rip or just desinigrate. I suggest taken ing them down every year for inspection. That may seem like a lot but I do not put myself of friends in situation of possible death due to lazyness
  20. You don't want to hang long ,keep a k if handy, ideally you get back in the stand, if it fell away, I hope your bear hugging skill are great or you have a cell and help is close by....
  21. I've shot 140 in and 130 in and 120 in. Bucks after over 100 deer (buck and doe) I do not get excited and would rather see another person get the deer I scouted and hung a stand for. I still put some effort into bow, it's always a challenge but only when i feel the need to, a good time with friends is what hunting has become for me personally....
  22. I've never sat longer than an hour, kudos to you if you can and want to sit that long! I've always roosted birds, got in close and if the cooperate I'm done in 45 min tops, if not I go back Home and try again the next day, figure no reason educate them, it's a long season. And I have plowing and planting to do so can't waste a day sitting for hours.
  23. Fairly common, you saw the winter color phase. In summmer it would be brown.
  24. Or you can save your back and buy 4 to 5 ft tall apple trees for 8 bucks apiece or 10$ if you want to know the variety from your local swcd or the state swcd. In march.
