  1. So here is the real question , of the dedicated hunters, who here stops looking for a buck after they shoot one . There by not trying to fill your 2nd tag. Be honest.... if I get a target buck with archery I look for a secondary target during gun or muzzleloader. I have filled my 2 tags 6x in last 10 years, but I also take 3 weeks vacation 2 for bow 1 for gun.. if I am forced to 1 tag it will be for archery and I'd pretty much give up gun season, I just don't find it challenging with out possibility of another buck, it's to the point if I see a deer with gun it's in range and shootable. Not so with bow..always a twig or something in way....lol
  2. Deer drives can be very effective, you just need to find the escape routes ( the smart big bucks double back between drivers) don't get discouraged if the army goes right under your stand, we drive late muzzleloader and can take many deer by sanders but the drivers seem to get more as we have enough drivers when the deer double back they run into out traiLing drivers. I have a opening day stand that has produced 54 deer since 1995, it's good for opening day only and only till 10 am, it uses surrounding hunter movement and watches an escape funnel. It took 2 years to figure out where to have it exactly ( was 50 yrds to far away from being in range of the buck escape trail but say right on th doe so a final tweet and you can cover both.) I've said it before 1 season does not a stand location make. It's not uncommon to see 30 to 50 deer from this spot before 10 am, and it just a matter of waiting for one big enough for your own satisfaction.
  3. Most rubs now are for removing velvet, they are not in areas where the deer will be most of the time in season, most rub lines parallel doe trail, and are found Oct nov.,your better off looking for funnels, and staging areas inside from field edges 50 to 100 yards, rubs will seem random in them as bucks will linger and wait for darkness to enter fields, (at least the smarter older ones do )
  4. Standing corn is a lot different than soybean, it provides cove ,by time season comes the bean will either be picked or about to be picked, you won't like going to the stand and having a cut field or one that is being cut while your I. The tree, why not put in the effort and see where entrance trails are and back track them into the woods closer to bedding or travel coridors, field hunting is ok if you want to see deer ,but it's much more effective to get a deer that you may see coming, than see deer that you can't get.
  5. I'd ask him why he's trying to kill the apple tree? They are not salt tolerent, if he looked at me stupid ,I'd call the dec.
  6. I'd call dec, I did it when I found one at bottom of my ravine, they came took the block and left a note. No problem
  7. 12 ga, and 30-30,308 seem to be what's used by alot of people
  8. Winchester model 12 12 ga. Long time ago...lol
  9. Baiting, salt lick, poaching . I've called dec on salt lucks before and road hunters ,I met with favorable responses both times
  10. I'd rather see a friend get something, than get myself something, I've shot over 50 buck and 3x that doe, hunting not hard, but I go out and enjoy the outdoors as a whole.
  11. Nice big body and pre rut,and velvet, 3.5 horns will be thine than you think when velvet is off and he will lose quite a bit of weight chasing. So his belly may not be sagging as much as it seems to be.
  12. Here is the root of the problem, most people don't just kill to kill, they full their freezer and stop. Now if they wanted to have hunters kill more Doe in areas and went to an earn a buck there with a collection station for all the unwanted doe,so they would be used that might accomplish something. Deer management and now these new buck management zone are to big and cannot be effectively manages as is. This will make it worse as access is limited in areas and un limited in others ,so areas with access decrease numbers the same unit may have a huge increase in numbers as no one can hun there.
  13. Tractors, kioti dk35se, and an oliver 1800, 5 bottom plow,3 bottom jd plow, 8 ft disc, field cultivators 6 ft and 5 ft, 8 ft culimulcher, 55 gallon trailer 10 ft wide boom spray trailer, jd 48 2 ron corn planter , 13 ft international grain drill, 6 bushel 3pt spreader, lime spreader 20 ft throw.
  14. And this is what happens in a high hunt in er population and take area, it's similar to logging if all you take is good timber. Out all you have left is junk even if it is 20 in in diameter, 90 % of nys woods have beenough highgraded, and the same will happen to the deer herd, really you better off letting a 1.5 year old 8 or 10 point walk and taking a 4pt or spike, ( for those who will say it can get big if you let it grow) the fact is an 8 pt at 1.5 years is exceptional, as is a 10, and next year it will be a bigger 8 ,10 or more points possible,a spike may be a 4 or 6 pt the next year and may not reach its potential for 3 or 4 years, so AGE is way more important than points..
  15. Is it your only stand? Is the food availability the same, was the buck chasing ,eating , just walking, land logged, sold, new hunter on neighboring properties, a lots of factors to think of the best spot may be 50 yards over, one lucky hunt does not a permanent stand location make imo.
  16. Here is the downside long term lots of bucks will result in lots of doe fawns being born, as well as many broken antlers and higher stress for remain buck during breeding, if the are a lack of buck in a population more buck fawn are born. The main question of 1 buck rule is it exists for ego, nothing to do with population, face it if you don't put time in you won't kill a big buck you can't stockpile them, if they survive they get harder and harder to kill. Much easier way to have bigger buck is to close season during the rut, no bow no gun season. Then you will find out who has learned skills hunt instead of watching the tv and becoming an expert.
  17. Sorry, but a similar story can be told over by many. Your not alone, ownership is only guaranteed way to have access
  18. Yes , I have even done this with an elderly neighbor
  19. I work in ohio and know many hunters from huron, Co and Ashtabula co, and Crawford co. And they do not like their system at all and many are traveling to ny to hunt for opertunities here at multiple deer.
  20. We use to have a 1 buck rule in ny, and then the archers and muzzleloader hunter pushed for a Tag specfic to bow or muzzleloader . As for comparisons, the rules regs and hunter numbers are quite different in ohio than ny, trespass law especially. You are not comparing apples to apples Gun season is 10 days that's it... and it's post rut. That's is a much bigger factor in ohio large bucks as well has having to have written permissio n to be on a property stating what implement and what season you have the right to be there on.so many more factors than a 1 buck rule in ohio. Truth is if you want a big buck in ny do your scouting ,put your time in ....
  21. The field cultivator(s) or © is all you need unless your looking to go with corn, if the ground is really rock hard ,a 1 row subsoiler run thru the field a few times will break the hard pan and help with drainage.
