  1. People shot deer for thousands of years off the ground with no scent control, if it gives you confidence use it, but I bet even in the books most records weren't taken with scent control, Jordan buck and lucky buck, and hundreds of other monsters were taken before it became the thing..
  2. Just think of all the bucks that don't get measured in nys, and all the small deer shot in the mid west, the shows show big ones but I've seen the same deer taken on different shows, not everyone gets a big buck even in big buck areas... most are average deer you never hear about or these states would have ten of thousands of entries every year and they dont... don't be deceived by the media, it will only set you up for dissapointment....
  3. If you can see them you can bust them up, even if a large group stays together young birds land in trees head the direction they went and bust them out of the trees, go back and wait till you hear yelping or kee keeing. . Call and shoot it's not spring and it's much more fun imo in fall.

  6. I hunt behind my house, I can make a knife out of about any silica stone, and no need for a fire, ridge I am on is 7 miles long and 2 miles wide surrounded by roads , if I was hunting big woods in an unknown area I would take more with me including a compass.
  7. But ar has been in effect for.several years in areas of ny, and by now biggest.buck area should.be there
  8. Hmm seems the biggest bucks are coming from non ar areas... just saying are they needed? Wny ,and long island no point restrictions, but biggest deer makes you think doesn't it.....
  9. yep clothes havent been washed in years, no spraydown, no scents, just me and my gun or bow... most of the time i dont even have knife with me, i have to go get tractor to get deer out so ill grab it then and gut while im there in junk clothes on oil and disiel semming tracor is ideling 10 ft away...
  10. Been doing that for over 20 years and have 23 different buck on cam, many I know by.markings as fawns from last year (we have a piebald gene here and it gives deer stocking feet or a spot. Granted most are little guys 4 and 5s, but they are still fun to see and passing little ones become easier when you see bucks every day. One guy in camp has passed 5 buck and 8 doe so far in 5 days hunting, (thise that were in bow range) not including deer he's seen to far away. It works, anyone that thinks a buck rules the woods is wrong a big mature doe will stomp a big buck as soon as it looses it's horns, big bucks keep bucks on the fringe it's the does that chase the little bucks out that were their own fawns to stop inter breeding...
  11. On top of my hill 34 and showers is always snow, by the time you get to bottom of hill is rain, happens every year. Nothing like looking at all the tops of the tallest hills and seeing them white ...
  12. Unless you buy muzzleloader then you get anterless only use can use during archery ...the buck only tag is a regular gun tag you are forced to buy even if you never hunt with gun. It becomes an either sex tag late season bow.
  13. I always shoot a doe with twin button bucks before she goes into heat and chases them off, it serves 2 purposes, 1. The only home range those buttons know is moms, so they stick around and you get to see them as yearling bucks who tend to hang around as they don't get chased out by mom the following year, so even if I don't want a yearling it keeps the stand lively seeing little bucks. 2. It puts good tasty meat in the freezer!!
  14. No acorns here were loaded last year, some hickory nuts, and apples in pockets. Deer are on apple and grew fields here right now
  15. So long range forcast today, wintery mix for next weekend, on tom of my hill that means snow! Always seem to get a snowstorm in october last few years then it warms.up and doesn't come back till gun season. Looking forward to some for tracking for bear...
  16. Problem is lack of field personal to before laws, I know many.hunter that go whole life with out ever seeing a game warden. More presence would be a detergent as well as an aid as you could ask them a question directly and not get lost in the shuffle
  17. A lone hen prolly means a flock was broke up, by a predator or person. Especially if it clucking and walking it's looking to regroup with the flock

    camp rule

Nope, have 4 rules, 1. no shooting anything standing on the lawn, 2. No complaining if someone shoots something bigger than you as we have no restrictions on size you have made a choice so live with it, 3. There is no frying of bologna or liver inside the cabin. ( long story but it s makes a big everlasting stink that penatrate everything) 4. You may hunt out of the hottub if yourage 65
  19. Most countries age meat the usa is one that doesnt, if you ever travel and see the black carcasses hanging before they are cut up you would never eat the food there, as for spoiling that's what aging does, the meat starts to rot causing connective tissue to break down making it nice and soft and tender, restraints tell you it's aged, and honestly there is nothing wrong with it, but it is letting meat technically rot to make it tender, the key is to control its progress using temperature so it doesn't putrify...
  20. If I'm standing, or still hunting a scope ,if I'm driving open sights
  21. Congrats, glad you learned along the way, knowing what she did and where dhe went will help you in other tracking situations,I use to back track deer I killed in the snow to see where they came from and what they were doing ,added a lot of knowledge to my hunting.
