  1. 285 acres,we take 10 doe a year and 8 buck on average, been that way since 1995., I really try to keep getting 10 doe a year and even recruit more hunters in muzzleloader to do so, keeps population and my woods regrowing

    Rage again

As long as they do not form a barb they are legal even if they have 5 blades, it's a good law the keeps a lot of game alive from a poor shot as arrow can pull out vs hang up and cause pain and infection. If you think otherwise walk around with a thorn sticking out of you for a few days...
  3. Just like they would freeze if they had to hunt in the snow, it's a different world below the mason dixion line....
  4. Had one stand that by the end of the week had 7 gut piles around it. Deer kept.coming..

    DMP

This was a way they tried to boost doe harvest, if you pay for it your more likely to fill, hasn't worked so no doe only 1st 2 week areas in effect. ... that prolly won't work either...
  6. Yep happens, even had one knock down a blind the camera was looking towards, that was an interesting group of pictures
  7. I understand the no trimming on state land, there are a lot.of endangered trees and most.people I know do not know trees past maple, oak, pine.
  8. Try varying your powder charge, start at 60 grains and work you way up by 10 and 5s , what you want is a sharp Crack and accuracy ,you gun my shoot powerbelts great at 85 grains for example, when you group starts opening back up your using 2 much powder ,try stepping down by 5,. 70 grain of powDer and 400 grain bullet will kill a buffalo at 200 yards. ( 45/70 gov was created to go 200 yards and penatrate 3 inches of solid oak. ) 45 cal bullet and 70 grains of powder.. accuracy is much more important that max load on powder.
  9. So walking and reposting a piece of property a friend owns (he doesn't hunt)and gave me permission to. And not 30 yards off the line is a ladder stand on adjoining property ( really I have no problem even if it a ft off the line) The problem is 20 yards from stand to the left is a spin feeder filled with corn, and 20 yrds to the right of the stand is a 55 gallon drum with a 6 in hole cut out of it chained to a tree! (I am assuming bear bait barrel) this was all visable from property line, and I didn't go look closer as I'm sure cameras are set up somewhere as well... I know what I did, what would you do???
  10. I will agree that the perception of qdm has become synonymous with trophy hunting, but that is not what it is, I believe they should change the name to total herd management and repost the ideas, and benifits it has, The biggest problem with hunting right now is the mainstream media, ever deer that is shown is 130 plus, that's fine its a show, the average guy hunting 90% of deer taken in those trophy states is smaller same as ny, you just have the media eye on the Midwest and canada.. that Is what is ruining hunting the media influence of oh do this and there will be a huge buck behind every tree!
  11. A pre Remington marlin guide gun 45/70 ,or 35 or 30/30,are quick fast handlers. Henry makes a good gun but barrel is a bit long, but has good open sights
  12. Practice shots from the stand? Just for that stay out of woods, lanes should of been trimmed month or more ago, if you want to shoot elevated put a ladder up and shoot off roof.. neighbors always complain that all the deer seem to leave right before the season, well I tell them 2 weeks before you run around on your atvs, hammer treestands, cut lanes, start a fire, slam truck doors, yell around the cabin, let your dog run around....it's quite at your place all year then bam...I'd leave too.... I do not enter my hunting areas starting after labor day weekend. Every one else pushes the deer to my nice quiet scent free woods....
  13. I have seen deer rip corn off the stalk many times, it's loud and in the dark is puzzling if you let your mind wander, I'd look at corner of corn and alfalfa, if corn is cut check the inside corners looking for trail 20 yards or so inside the woods. And doc yes still hunting corn can work I missed one of the biggest bucks I ever shot at still hunting corn. But you really need land owner permission, knocking dow n stalks even accidentally does not make a farmer happy.
  14. standing corn is cover and food , deer dont have to leave. to pick a spot you need ease of access, wind direction. the down wind edge of corn where a deer cruises the edge looking for doe is a good place to start, cutting of the corn changes things as cover is lost. if its warm they wont be eating corn but will be in the alfalfa, look for the edge that get shade from a setting sun, deer love moving in shade and enter thru the shaded areas first. the best advice to to hang a stand to get a deer that you might see(coming) than to see deer that you might get( watching deer at a distance to far to shoot is very fustrating) i'd rather have a deer pop out at 20 yards then watch in coming from 200yrds hoping i might get a shot at it.
  15. I have a 246, the fert is regulated by the plate under the fert hopper, a door slides in or out with adjustment screw (I'm assuming you have dry fertilizer hoppers) big thing is controling the depth of planting done with top bar adjust and your 3pt top link, you want constant pressure on drive wheels, if you rototill you may want to roll ground first at tilling fluffs soil to much, remember to check your seed plate with size of seed to make sure it feed seeds with out cracking then
  16. 1st not every deer in ohio is big, they take lots of little ones too, we take deer the same size in nys now without. 1 buck rule, access, restricting access, soil and habitat is much more varied in nys than ohio, as are the bedrock found there. All this plays into factors that effect growth of deer, If you hunt near a big no hunting park or residential area, you can kill a huge buck, I think the biggest difference is the media portrait of big buck states, and that is based on entry into record books, I have several old neighbors that have more 130 and 140 skulls hanging on nail in barn and out buildings, one has a mouse chewed 104 point rack , every in of that bucks beams and main points are covered in 1 to 2 in stickers. NONE OF THESE BUCKS HAVE BEEN ENTERED, OR CHANCES ARE WILL EVER BE ENTERED. Frankly they don't care about it, the lucky buck was dead for many years before it was discovered. Scores and big buck bragging is a fairly new phenomenon. You can see just by the increase in entry's every year, are bucks just getting bigger or is it the chance to brag or strike it rich that many need to get one in the book. Most people around me still do not put a buck in a book officially, myself included, even a bear I got would.make book, I choose not to, though I do have them.scored incase some "trophy hunter" wants to tell me.what it scores or wants to know cause he shot a 140 class in Iowa and they just don't get that big around here...

    Buying traps

I haven't seen any, but it's easy and fast to do , you can use liquid black and kerosene and wax is easy.
  18. They are fine unless they are clearing the woods.
  19. I have same crossbow and shoot a block, tap in the bolt an bit and it will pull out easy, enters so fast plastic bonds to it a tap on the nock with a 2x4 solves this as it breaks the bond
  20. Cold can always wear more to hot can only.take off what you have on then your stuck it's still hot... kudos the the person who invented ac....
  21. I bought some adjoining land that had some stands on it I believed belonged to adjoining landowner, so I took them down placed against a posted sign. On trail to where stand was , as the owner of the stands was seldom there. 3 weeks later they were all back up in same trees , so a chainsaw dropping the tree with stand in it and smashing them to scrap was the next step, the trees was later cut up for firewood. Not hard to read. Name address on posted sign ,I'm not a thief so I didn't want them, but I have not seen the owner of the adjoining property since. (It's a small piece I surround now.)
  22. The problem with this whole thing is people seem to only shoot what they will use for many that 1 deer, usually preferably a buck, Until there is an easy way to, and hunters mentality changes to kill and donate doe to food banks ,ect you can add all the tags you want it won't increase the take unless you can recruin more hunters ( enter the x bow ,and early muzzleloader )
