1st deer are always alert, they are a prey animal and uner 15 yards a deer will not be able to duck any modern arrow. From 18-35 yrds a deer can drop and cause your arrow to miss, over 35 yards deer tend not to react to noise as it is out side their zone of concern. Your 59 yrd shot is the same as shooting a deer at 300 yrds with a rifle. That's is target practice as deer has no clue your there, hunting is the ability to get close to game within its comfort zone undetected. Shooting it is the anti climax of this skill. It's hard to miss game at 5 yards no matter what your using. The native hunters did not have powerful weapons but had skills that allowed them to get close to game that then afforded them the harvest of their quarry.

Although I have much respect for a traditional bow hunter, and man using a flintlock, hearing the crystal of modern compound bow hunters with fiber optic c sights 80%letoff,release Aids. complain about a crossbow is like calling the kettle black. That is what you are shooting and the difference is negleable between the two. I would love to see a,week for modern bow an a week for crossbow, znd the rest of archery season for traditionalists. The same with muzzleloader. if your going to use a scope and in line ignition it's the same as a rifle and not useable in regular muzzleloader season. Sick of hearing the whining about legal hunting impliments being unfair or unmanly to use. Get over it.... should there be a course or an addition to a couse for hunting with a crossbow, yes definitely, how is that done within current laws, more time is needed using crossbows before enough instructors would become available.....

More deer does not a hunter make, same people that get deer now consistently will be the same to get them no matter what the law.

You can't teach a course unless you have 3 years experiance with the weapon your using, impossible in nys, perhaps when 3 years has gone by you will see a course in place. If you only have a handful of instructors it can't be done on state level, so the computer class was put in place. I truly hope to see an actual course in the next few years, whether lpary of bow or part of gun.

That pose was customised, head turned and foot raised, by cutting and reshaping the form, the guy that did it is best I have found for bear. I use a different tacit er mist for deer, not that the bear guy does bad deer but deer guys deer are just a little better. You can't be an expert at exerything, and I like to stay away from big places that do thousan da of mounts, they have more than 1 guy working for them, who's work are you getting? They show the best work on display floor but you just happen to get new guys work though it may be good it's not the same as what you thought you were paying for... jmo

Rugs go by sq ft, 500-900 depending on size felt picked and open or closed mouth on head... full mounts 2000 and up..depending on base, form and size of bear. These are average prices in my area.

Pick a good taxidermist that is use to and has done bears, and can show you mounts they have done, take the time and compare the mount pics to actual photos. most common mistakes are setting ears to high like a deers, bears ears are set in,I've seen a lot of mike mouse looking bear mounts.setting eyes and skinning out nostril deep enough that no puddy is needed and is not visable. Your taxidermist may be a great deer head guy, but bears are different. Every taxidermist has their own specialty. .hope your mount turns out great!

Bolts enter fast and melt the foam to them in many 3 d deer targets and others made from same materials. Wd 40, wax, oil , all reduce the friction on carbon shafts, metal seems to dissapate the heat from friction better and don't stick. I've found compressed cardboard works well with carbon shafts . And perhaps putting a few layers in front of a block target will reduce speed enough to prevent melting.. I'll have to try that myself..o goody a new experiment

I've had a mosberg 835 since they came out, camo paternity od green, will drop birds out to 65 yrds with .675 choke. Wouldn't trade it for any other turkey gun regardless of make or unlimited funds... be prepared to put some kind of sight reddot or scope on any turkey specfic gun you buy,you need it with their tight patterns

Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.
G-Man replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
that would be bad here as we have killed mature 4 pt 21in inside spreads, and 6pts with 18 inside. we have a bad gene pool that are missing brow tines, bee that way since 93' a 5 year old 6 pt is hard to kill it doesnt care about how many points are on its head, we try and concentrate on deer with no brows in general. i do not like being generalised into the statrs plans as they young brow deficient deer would continue on the trait we have been trying to eliminate.. -

i went back trough camp records, and there have been 23 yearling antlered bucks taken in last 3 years, 4 have had less than 3pt on a side, but 17 are yearling buck 5pt or better, i dont see how a 3 pt rule will change anything here, or help protect yearling buck in this area.. waste of time for a feel good law -
Destructive, yet creative creatures.. if your the landowner losing valuable trees you pray for beaver hats to come back into fashion........

If they go to a quick rule I expect the bow hunting an muzzleloader privilege to cost much less, 5 bucks is a good number.. I think it will cause a huge hit to the dec income. -
There is a reason the curved blade is known as a skinner or caping knife......... knives are made for specfic purposes or a butcher would only have one knife....
