  1. If it made it through winter in good shape, (replacement of nutrients go to skeleton first before antlers)rough winter where I am 10 to 20in more of antler growth is possible, but if he didn't come out in good shape growth May be minimal or poor (an slight increase in mass but a decrease in ttime length or number of points) winter of 2011-12 was very mild resulting in great racks last hunting season, i expect to see less growth on bucks this hunting season and not as many trophys taken.
  2. really big bucks are up 4 to 6 inches already..

    Camo

my neighbor hunts in an old od green army coat from korean war and blue jeans , gets his birds spring and fall no problem hes now 74 years young. its not the camo it is being still and knowing when to move.most camo looks good to humans i dont think the animals really care, deer is brown and white and they are tough to see in the woods unless they move...
  4. i like the red dot as where the dot is the bullet goes , comes in handy when shooting from opposite shoulder when turkey comes in from where u dont expect and you need to get the shot off
  5. its only a possible good spot if you can get into and out of it undected. lots of thick spots have great trails but if you bust out the deer going in or out of it its pretty much worthless
  6. go to a good dealer stihl or husky and tell him what you want it for and what you might use it for, getting a saw for cuttin 1-2 cord of limb wood is a lot different that cutting 10 cord of wood a year fron 12-16 inch diameter wood.. when in doubt go to next bigger size. i have 5 saws and each does a different job, felling, bucking, topping ,trimming, and firewood. a good reputable dealer will know what size cc motor and bar you need, stay away from big box stores (even if they sell same saw,its not the same believe me) stihl and husky both have cheapend versions thatbig box stores sell but are a lot less that the dealer models.
  7. So if each brother carried and placed a device, who placed the 3Rd unexploded one and where is he/ she? Or are wee suppose forget there was another device?
  8. Get a good hand sprayer (Under 50$ bucks will last years), kill where ever you want to plant when green up has started weed killers work best when plants are growing, wait a couple of weeks spray again and plant your small seeded annuals (clover, brassicas) would be better if you can remove the dead vegetation by burning(if possible) or mechanical means (rake by hand or York rake on tractor). Burning is a great way to clear but a permit may be needed and extreme care as everything is dry and dead in spring
  9. the heck with the truck, get some thing that gets 50 miles to the gallon so you can drive to camp and go hunting more! lol ... jk nice truck!
  10. If your worried about saving money, you'll mess up that barrel , and you won't get a pattern out of it worth a damn, save a buck and just get another barrel, or gun with choke tubes

    Youth hunt

Well 2 inches of snow cold and windy, saw 5 deer, a vocal hen, had two jakes sneak and ended up resulting in a miss by my nephew on one of them, best was the big shed we found from a 3 or 4 yearold buck.
  12. fall birds follow the food.. spring bird set up areas by fighting for them, and then they stay pretty consistant in their roosting , perhaps moving when wood fully leafed out or in adverse weather conditions....when breeding is coming to an end
  13. maybe not the same tree but within 50 yards of previous roosts especially in spring as long as they aren't pressured. further it's been my experiance the same area will be used year after year after year , even if you get the tom another moves in to takes is place. very useful when birds aren't gobbling..go to the area set up call soft and stay vigilent they are there almost guarenteed
  14. personally i use number 5 winchester xx supreme 3.5 in .shoots. 24in circle at 50 yards, slug sized hole at 20 thus the need for a red dot scope.... really don't see need for hevi for turkey, but if your confident in using what you do stick with it.....
  15. Does anyone still activley roost birds? I was taught this method and can usually pick the tree the bird is in 80% of the time. definatley within 50 yards 99% of the time. then its just a matter of slipping in close. i use to think 100 yards was good enough, but my educator told me to get close 40-50 yards. It takes some skill to learn to walk thru the woods with no flashlight in complete dark making little or no noise. but it increased my harvest rate by 100%. a simple tree call scratching the leaves, and flydown having a big gobbler land 10-40 yards from you is worth going out the evening before and locating them. even had them poop on me while sitting against the tree they are in. by far the most exciting way to hunt for myself.

I have never used a blind, nor have i ever taken a bird in a field, i usually get them 50 yards from the roost tree at 6:15 in the morning. My goal is always to be back in the house by 830 at the latest....i assume you set up the blind days ahead of time? I know when they cannon net turkeys they place a bale of straw to simulate the net box before they make the switch as turkeys do not like unfamilar things..
  17. The chisel tip I believe would stick better if a rib was hit vs a razor tip which seems to skip of a rib in a quarting shot either to or away.
  18. Decrease for sure, think a lot gave up when it wasn't like the TV shows and magazines they watched. That and populations aren't what they were in the late 90's . Poor hatch and wet springs took care of that.
  19. i guess we can expect bans and regulations on ball bearing purchases.......
  20. lookslike a break and reheal.. from what?? gunshot, car, slip. anthing is possoble had one several years ago shot here that had a sinilar injury near it's ankle
