  1. Biggest complaint I see here is its during bow... it would be before bow season except for the change last year to oct 1st last year in southern zone(not familiar with northern but I believe season was open then already). seem archers give up (not really cause they can hunt) 3 days and got 11 more... hmmm . pretty good trade and they still have first shot at their buck for 11 days before the youth can take their deer...lol oh well. 5-6000 kids across the state estimated to participate and most on private land... come pare that to 150000 goose/duck hunters and 100000 or more small game hunters out there same time ..but gunshots will scare the deer? no one seems to worry about that when the week before gun starts it sounds like a battlefield with everyone sighting in guns...let alone slamming car doors, dogs and wood smoke and fire wood cutting going on that week and previous weekend...
  2. its not the land but hunter densities in the mid west, average rec property here 30 acres or so, 50 if your lucky. there small farms are 440 acres. large can be thousands. put the 2-4 guys at average camp in nys on 30 acres, and 2-4 on 440..big difference... deer can get old not from trigger control but just cause they are not hunted...the growing of there deer isn't them growing them its a 1 buck limit and hundreds to choose from. so wait for a good one. here some people never even see a buck...
  3. As much as the industry pushed atv and atv equipment , its cheaper to buy a used tractor and equipment and do it 100% more efficient.
  4. I've done it here with deer to the130-40's and are not strict on sise limitations. Deer just need age more than anything. We have increased weight sby15lbs across the board as well. A strict program would do better I'm sure if the goal was huge bucks, were out to have fun more than anything and enjoy hunting other games as much. The biggest help is a sanctuary area that is thick and not hunted or pressured year round. Ours is 30 acres, And another 10 acres piece. Food is of a secondary thought when trying to get deer to maturity.
  5. You better know how to skin and butcher it in the woods or you will not get it out. 5 Guys on mine to movee it.250yards. and that was with snow. Then used tractor to bring it 3/4 mile uphill
  6. i gladly give up a weekend to take a youth out, special season especially. the problem is when i was a kid i could walk out the back door and go hunting anytime i wanted. season or no season, there was something around to shoot pigions in barns, starlings, blackbirds, frogs, turtles and just tin cans, old bottle dumps.: . a lot of oldtimers were brought up same way. age limits hunting courses were non existant. todays kids live in subburbs deer and turkey are about all the big game they have chance for and everything is well regulated today. just get them use to warm weather? we use to be able to walk down the street with our bb guns, and shoot turtles, and frogs in creeks ditchess and ponds to our hearts were content in summer. now the damn swat team would be called out and media would make it seem like kids were part of a zombie apocolipse. this is a good idea, as is taking them out opening day. opportunities are limited for kids to just go plink these days so give em a day or two to hunt legally.
  7. 90% to be inoculated? how are they going to keep track of the ones they already did, there will be dead dying deer for years to come old age and malnutrition will lead to diseses and predator increase.. stupid idea, and waste of tax payers money
  8. The food plots that you see out west are there because once the crops are harvested it is literally a desert..no food at all.... lots of cottonwoods planted out there to draw deer into the open. Cant really compare nys with iowa/kansas/missouri. large ag fields and tiny woodlots not many hunters per acre either.. besides food doesnt make big antlers, need age for that or there would be 140in yearlings running all over the place.. food can help reach full potential but age is the much bigger factor... And yes deer are rats eat any and everything... insects, frogs , fish included.
  9. I started plotting for grouse and turkey, deer just show up big fuzzy rats they are. Habitat and enjoyment are the two main reasons I do it.
  10. i have weighed un gutted buck at 186lbs(early bow kill) on scale, then gutted it and it weighed 151lbs. the charts posted are accurate, but meat loss due to shot can add up to be alot. i always laugh when i hear somone say i should of got back 80 lbs from that buck as they stand there with 45 after blasting a backstap and shoulder away... deer get bigger the longer the drag it seems, as do antlers... then when they get mount back...oh the taxidermist gave me the wrong mount or shrunk my horns. I weigh all the deer taken off my property, and have used the measuring tape method and compared, the tape measurement if done correctly are accurate, but, there are regional differences in shape and legnth of deer that may make it off by 5-10 lbs a deer.
  11. A good 2.5 or crappy 3.5.but it was tough winter around here last year so many deer will not reach their potential this year as bodys were depleated making it through last winter with no mast and little to eat.at best guess 100 in +/- 10. most people in nys would be very happy with that! if you are shoot him if given the chance. Almost all deer are done growing by me now and horns are starting to harden, there will be velvet rubs by me by 1st of september. (earliest ive seen hard horn was august 28th,(2 nice mature bucks) and latest velvet shed was oct 17th a small 3 point that shed in 15 min one day walking by the cam in velvet and 15 min later walked back hardhorn.
  12. so you better not be over an old apple orchard, farm field (including hay) or you are as well?
  13. looks good! you wont regret having it done for sure!! I am surprised that so many people are afraid they will leave tops? theyare a good thing protecting young regrowth from being browsed and if ther are removed should be cut up in place to prevent libs from scaring trees on way out. And they can be used to make a natural fence is all pushed to one side of cut, making deer travel more patterenable and predictable!!!
  14. my neighbor who is a meat hunter waits for bucks to lose horns before he shoots them on purpose, bigger deer = more meat.. killed some monsters with huge pedicals over the years. But its his choice as much as I would like to see them with horns the following year.
  15. hunting standing corn is productive good way to do it is with bow, row to row. gun it can be dangerous
  16. Where are you looking? Area? Closest town? Nys is pretty big
  17. Grow a beard! You can't forget it, or wash it off, smear, a few days growth covers all... why pay for something that's free plus no need to buy razors /blades for a few months. Gives more cash to spend on gas to go hunting!
  18. Bowhumting October whitetails has that in slow motion in their video back in the late 80's. Pretty conclusive proof on video. And I agree over 35 deeR don't react to the sound of the shot. Its why long didtance shots are possible at a feeding deer. (Not trying to say they should be done or not) but I almost prefer a longer shot than a 30yard if i have a chance in an open field. Just for that reason.

    Deer beds

an old video, had good information, take a month or a whole season and drive areas you believe hold deer, learn the escape routes, thenat future date hunt them. the areas that hold deer are usually bedding areas. (notice i didn't say bed) . deer will constintually use an area for bedding. it may be (small an acre or so) or large (a 20 acre crp field) creating an area that deer feel safe/dry/protected on your property is prolly the most important thing to do. driving deer seems to be a thing of the past but if you have ever been on one that has been sucessful its because the person organizing it knows a bedding area and the escape routes. now in our modern "stand hunting" if you learn the escape routes and set up on them you stand a pretty good chance of getting your deer when others start to move and kick deer around.
  20. I think more big bucks die of old age and are never found in nys. they live a few years and know where to disappear too permantly. not like out west where pressure is minimal and they walk around in daylight. amazing what trail cams show, we wouldn't believe what is out there otherwise.
  21. try it, you'll soon find out who is on board and who isn't. informal gathering is best. just remember to try and get a consenous to what everyone wants. your ideas my not suit everyone and then resentment and resistance are very possible.
  22. I like to burn off dead dried tops, puts nutrients in the ground. that being said , have water/fire department near by or if possible plow fire break. not legal to bun in many areas as well.
