  1. That's why I have always kept a few thousand rounds well before this started... 12 ga and most rifle rounds iI shoot I reload, .22 Have several bricks in reserve at all times...
  2. Sam Potter I agree, with mild winter year before antler growth should of been exellent so I am going with 2.5 . Most people see a 2.5 And its huge or a giant...3.5 could be similar but i feel 2.5 a old buck 4.5 And up is truly impressive..
  3. i have 3 brothers that have never been called i get called every 5 years (yes 5 ) 1st is county, then next year state , then next year federal... ugh
  4. Well my nephew and his cousin passed the hunter safety course this past sat and now i have two youths to guide for the youth hunt. recruiting a friend that hunts with me so its easier on myself neither parent turkey hunts ... . weather looks like it could be better but is still a week away and may change... Anyone else taking a youth out ??
  5. just go tell them you love drugs thinks laws are bs and they'll kick you out.. if they even call your number to show up. heck i got called in on a friday before gun season a few years ago when it opened on a monday for fed supreme court. guy there said it was a burden as he has trip planned for hunting on monday and he was dismissed.. i went the i know judges , cops, and drugs should be legal route and was 2nd kicked from selection process. personally it should be volentier or take then from the old folks homes bunch of conservitive views is prolly what the court system needs1
  6. Bear report is out and its scaled down from previous ones...budjet cuts??
  7. Water crossings/ ravine crossings, fence jumps(those are fun to make.) Deer pattern cameras. And you going out the same trails to check them...
  8. good 2.5 or poor 3.5 year old i'm leaning toward good 2.5.. yes he will prolly get bigger maybe more points maybe not, couple of years 5.5 plus he'll be great.
  9. i shoot many right handed gun left handed, who has money for custom guns, safeys are easy switch a good gun smith can do in 20 min or you can do yourself with most crossbar sefetys. top tang sefetys like browning bps, mossberg and a lot of savages have tang safetys. the marlin i use is rt handed and it works fine for me. i had a great friend who has since passed that had a browing a-5 safety reversed because he was left handed. i remember walking into camp and him saying any gun on the rack is fair game to use i picked up his a -5 he laughed and said good luck its left handed!! i smiled zipped up my coat and said good so am I and waalked out he door with it ! we ended being the only 2 guys in camp left handed... i was 16 and he was 55... great teacher and friend....
  10. greensider? destrying habitat really? nys is more forested now than turn of last century, water and air cleaner than just even a few years before not to mention decades ago. more sportsmen are creating habitat and food specificially for wildlife... i belive moose populations in ny are increasing as are bear, fisher, to the dislike of many bobcats, brush wolves(coyote) all are on increase... even timberrattlers are increasing as are bald eagles and raptors in general.... personlally i don't kill snakes but if someone has a problem with them in a residence ...let them take what is appropriate for them action .
  11. went snipe hunting and got a coon in that sack... boy were the adults/older guys surprised! only thing that would of made it better is if it was a skunk....
  12. i only state stable population here as in my hunting grounds i know the population as i live here 24/7. We in nys hunt late breeding or renesting time. toms are mostly alone or with hens that did not have sucessful nesting/nest. anyone else remember 1 bearded bird may 1-15th one 16-31st? mid april is about peak for gobbling early would be mid march. just like a few does get bred early same with hens. and early may there are the late birds (jennys) from year before. a mid april opener would really hurt as a lot of breeding birds would be removed, even though poligamistic there are always more hens than toms and excessive breeding would wear them down same as a buck. its why i always try to take an adult henin the fall..evens the sex ratio a little.
  13. breedeing is always in march and april every year, our season is designed to fall after for that specfic reason alone. I get sick of hearing we should open the season in april. you would kill off prime breeders. we do this for turkey but run the deer season thru the rut...want to save bucks close season during the rut!! but I digress... the hen can delay the implantation of sperm for 30 days if the weather is off, or conditions not right too cold for example. birds are always here and population has been stable for several years. no where near the numbers in late 90's early 2000's though. but I open my acreage for trapping and keep coyotes/fox in check . raccoons and opposoms are the worst thing out there for nests..damn egg eaters!!! once they can get up in a tree the coyote/fox can't do much to them.
  14. I mean I wouldn't show up in camo opening day and expect to get permission. now is a good time, not 2 weeks before deer/ duck season. I go in the summer before hay cutting and offer to help do hay, spring and fall are busy seasons for farmers and they are usually busiest then and a week or two before getting equipment ready to go or fixing problems. How would you feel if your up to your elbows in grease fixing your car/ truck and some comes up and interrupts you so yu have to crawl out from under it ti talk to them??? Or the owner is getting ready to walk out and hunt and sees another hunter walking up his driveway? far away from a hunting season make you more respected as your trying ti secura a place in the future giving enough time to trade labor or lend a hand , scout , learnt the property lines before you hunt. asking someone to give up time to show you lines boundries no hunt areas (where he/she might hunt) ahead is just respectful and is much appreciated in todays world by good hard working people.
  15. last year most breeding and egg laying was well underway by early april. hens can store male sperm for 30 days before they let it impregnate their eggs. I think last year toms were lonely early. this year is more of a normal spring and I expect the warmer last weeks of april early may to be good with gobbling dropping off by 2nd week of may. most hens should start to be laying by then. last year they were already sitting!!
  16. Took down the 32 stands, will be going over straps, cables, nuts and bolts, seats, cushions same as every off season. plowing planting as soon as weaher permits.
  17. tax maps are the way to go, most have an overhead of the town with boundries roughley laid out and the tax number in them. then its just a matter of looking up the number for the owner's address. If you don't own it someone does! take the time to figure it out and ask.. lots of people just want to know who's there and best to ask far away from any open seasons...
  18. Brassicas seem to take a year or two before deer learn what they are and when they do they are destroyed... good late season
  19. I have a friend that consistently takes adult birds from canadaway 2nd and 3rd week every year and never sees another hunter...
  20. Most public lands are busy 1 week and week end then they seem to get quiet again. have driven few a few during the week and never see a car especially last few years. I really think the turkey hunters are down in number.the die hards still go but all the weekenders are absent as numbers have been down.
  21. seen more run from a decoy than come to them....
  22. I got my corn from them again, and i'm sure mailing is in the box when i get home to check it , good orginization that actually gives a little something back to the little landowner.
