first you'ld have to be caught, if you know the dogs owner a simple i'm letting you know i saw your dog running deer and if i see it again i'm calling the dec is usually enough for an escaped pet owner to keep it secured,.most dogs that run deer aren't usually an in home pet but a unregistered animal also illegal, if your dog is running deer 1. You dont know where it is,almost all towns have leash laws and not obeying them is also illegal 2. if it doesnt come back how do you know what happened to it it will be just another lost dog perhaps eaten by coyotes ? 3. if it was "taken care of" and not spoken about by person that did it you would never have a clue as to who did it. illegal yes chance of getting caught about 0 if you keep your mouth shut.

Most feel good laws are fairly new, thank disney for humanizing animals (read the book bambi felix salten wrote in the late 1800 that bambi was made from its a real eye opener), many a cat/kittens been drowned in gunny sacks on the farm when i was a kid. same as taking them to a shelter and them putting them down only a vet doesn't get rich, or a pet cemetary.... i even had to put down my own horse when i was 12 , grandpa showed me the place to aim behind the ear. bang flop. better than letting it suffer and learning the value of life growing up on a farm are things that most of suburbia will never understand so they just make laws to uphold their own beliefs.

have shovel, don't tell.... solved. I have a pic of someones' rott with a collar carrying a fawn on my property. I think people who let their dogs out do not understand they can lick you to death at home and kill when not watched.... I even have an old field and stream magazine that the entire back cover has an add saying "protect your small game kill all feral cats" has great graphic art of an army of cats coming over a hill and a cloud of small game and birds floating toward the heavens.. how the world has changed, and not for the better in my opinion. I remember several dogs being shot by my father running deer and him taking them to the owners house and telling him they were running deer in the 80's. Have a dog fence it or leash it!!!

buy a good make and a heavy one ne need for extra weight then same as a good back blade, the land pride tsc use to sell work well but are not really designed for heavy use. wheels do help if you have a don't have a float option or draft adjust control for your 3 pt hitch .

Food plot ideas...need some advice
G-Man replied to blackradio's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
sounds like you need to do a bunch of prep first. over grown fields are a lot to recover there are lots of dormant seeds to deal with. looks like you'll be planting this fall, double cross will work and i'm with grow... alfalfa on the slope. you may want to plant that with winter wheat if your looking to draw deer this year. clovers and alfalfa really need a year to get fully established, and follow the seeding rate , to much seed and the plot will choke itself out. -
Too bad you should try it. I'd truthfully turkey hunt over deer hunting. Much more interaction with turkey and weather usually better, plus 2 seasons spring and fall !

Ny has always had their season after peak breeding in April the exception is the youth hunt. I'm glad to see a "normal" spring this year .

its awesome and i cant believe its legal..really pay attention to safe distances it packs a wallop!

if it a big bird i pluck it lots of good meat on it besides just the breasts, if its jake or young of the year in fall i just breast them .

I taught my nephews how to check to see if a pistol was loaded or not by age of 3 they couldn't even lift the barrel tip off the floor but knew how to open and check the mag, chamber , and cylinder in revolvers. they were taught to always ask to see them and first thing was to make sure they are unloaded. they are now 12 and 9 and the oldest has his 1st shotgun and the 9 year old a bb gun. they both shoot .22 rifle and pistol with supervision. every child is differnt but the quicker they learn properly the less time they have to pick up bad habits. its great to see them with a friend over teaching them how to shoot and instructing them in safety first at 9 and 12.

i had a bb gun at age 7 and a .22 at 10

i agree doc the total failure sucked last year, a bad apple year is a good hunting year ,just takes some scouting to find the tree that has friut on it. when there is mast at all like last year its hard as your areas herd is spread out looking for food. a good year by me is 15 acres of apple trees bent to the ground and thr forest floor is like walking on softballs. deer can enter and exit anywhere. i would like to see a good mast crop just for the extra food it produces for all the wildlife, i fully expect smaller antlers this year due to the lack of excess food through the winter.

if only the real weather people would do this....lol

I've seen buck lose horns earlier in the season but an injury is usually the cause for early drops in my experience.

need help ...new to plots

Bulk lime is way to go if you have a spreader or can have it spread, local agway, farm supply or mill may be able to supply it. -
A mouth call is a tool, i use them but slates and boxes do not require much movement when used properly. Less than 1/4 inch. And can be used loud, soft, and anywhere in between . Thats as much movement as your adams apple moving. Or a lot of peoples jaws or turning their head to make it seem further away or cupping a hand to the mouth for direction when working a mouthcall. For a beginner i give a pushbox vs mouth any day. Don't make turkeys to be supernatural they are pretty easy to fool i've done it many times just scratching leaves. If a bird wants to die it will come to the most awful call out there. Just like the media pushes mouthcalls, 20 guage shotguns super full choke tubes, hevi shot. Generations killed bird with wingbones, boxes, and frictions long before the mouth call was even an idea...

Looks nice! No snow.. i still have 10 inches on ground, nice seeing a few strutters as well
-
i have seen them on till april 15th before. earliest i've seen drop is dec 24th
-
not much movement at all, actually , and electronic analylisis is a lot closter for friction vs mouth.looking at radio wave legnths, natural voice and slate or friction have been around for eons, rubber/latex diaphrams wear out quickly very fast if not properly cared for. remember the old lead framed calls? how many are still around, you can still get a 100 year old box call... i know a lot of people that never tried turkey hunting for more than a season or two because of mouth calls( gagging getting to excited and squeeling them or making a wrong sound when birds were in fron of them)every one told them they needed to use a mouth call when they found out they could work a box or push box and call birds they started hunting again.
-
I'll put a slate or box against any mouthcall for longevity and realism...

chestnuts grow extremely fast and if you leave them in pots you could suffer root bind. plant them in 4' tall tree tubes and they will be out of the top in a year.... make sure you put mesh over the top to keep out birds. most produce nuts in 3-5 years.

back to a normal spring I guess..

Those prefab elevated blinds look just like porta-pottys on stilts but will run you $1000.00 plus. If it is a crapper someone was using their head. But it looks like a prefab from the pic....
