1000 For gun? Maybe 400 for gun and 600 for scope, you should have more into the scope than the gun.. I'd look at a 30 06, 308 , 270, 280 before a 300 win mag, seen them kill deer and see them destroy them too. what do you consider long range? Because a gun can shoot that far doesnt mean you can. And ammo availability is always something to consider as well.

height is only a factor of available cover 1st and formost, 2nd is comfort. if the cover dictates a 30 ft stand and you are afraid of anything over 10' dont hunt there! you'll spook more game than u see. same if cover is to thick for an effective shot over 10' dont hang your stand at 20' you will get fustrated at seeing deer you cant shoot or you'll deflect and make a poor shot. when you find a spot you want to hunt draw an imaginary circle of 18 yrds from that spot. the prevaling wind will tell you where in the circle the tree for your stand needs to be. then cover will dictate the hight of your stand. (those with only climbers you'll find look for a tree that the stand will work on. straight and limbless and are forced to go higher than those with a hangon that can go in a tree with many limbs and using that cover can be much lower. climbers may not be able to use wind to their advantage due to lack of suitable tree for their stand.)

first ask the farmer, he lives there and knows it better than anyone else, he can point out where and what time deer enter fields, if hes working when u get there lend a hand. dont put up stands or cut lanes unless you asked if you could, boots walking around the field edges will give you lots of sign, as will old rubs on trees on edge of fields. i'd be as low impact as possible when you find a good trail follow it back in a way 50 yards max and look for old rubs, set your camera up there.staging areas are a great place to start. your first time hunting it will be more of observing than hunting, if you feel skilled enought to use arial maps and topos, you may be able to find good funnels. my experiance is most have no idea of what they are lookng at or for. you maybe can find someone who is skilled to help you find those more secluded areas.

no acorns from frost, apples doing well, walnuts doing well, chestnuts look iffy, to much rain. haven't got a chance to check pignut hickories yet

Purple tops grow at least 1/2 of the bulb out of the ground why a the tops are purple. If yours are more than this, they are to close together or you have hard tough soil. They do best in sandy/loamy soil that loosenend 4 in deep.

look like deer flies, they are bad this year.

It happens, the person using it has to live with their guilt if they harvest game over it. To few econ officers to enforce the law. The game in the state belongs to the state, I always here my deer or your deer. I can't keep them on my property they wander all over. I blame the media and hunting shows for antler fever, I don't watch them anymore. All the good educational stuff was done in late 80's early 90's. Now the shows are b & c score ( they always use gross in the ads as well) the hheight the score the bigger the antler fever and protecting my deer craze seems to get. antler restrictions ? I like to eat my deer and although a big buck is nice , its also nice not to get one every year as it make the ones you do get that much more special.

Anybody else waiting for the rain to quit

need a week of dry weather to get 2 acres plowed for turnips ... to wet to do anything but cut lawn... -
looks like they are doing good job so far, it gets messy but as long as straitened up at end of job you'll be in real good shape , great hunting for next 7-10 years for sure

Sorry i should of stated before there was a season here by open i meant it was closed in my area open 1 mile away rt 17 at the time. .. it was a no season kill and he tried self defence plea, problem is a bear coming at you is head down and not much of a target, i know first hand on that believe me! and season range was extended to try to control animal population from gettin into more populated urban areas. as for nothern reporting i dont know the regs there as i dont hunt but take a pic around rodchester and it looks nothing like the dacks!! you will get caught... hell the whole town knew about the bear i got befor ei even had it out of the woods all from 1 guy sending a pic to his son when he was helping drag it out. And what is your taxidermist going to do if asked..sed the dec your way..he/she isnt going to lose their buisness beacuse of you.

Questions about new food plot sites
G-Man replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
12 hrs for roundup, but pronto big n tuff is same stuff and cheaper/ i mix with 2/4 d as it make a more potant weed/brush killer. a week is a good time for it to kill off and remove as much dead vegietation as you can. -

I like apin, and purple top turnips, break ground up well especially with deer digging thru snow to get every bulb looks like its been rototilled in spring. bonus is I like to eat turnip as well so it gives me some extra free food! really get in first with roundup and 2/4 d now fall panting isn't till end of july in most cases and the less competition the better!! -
A lot will depend when fields are cut and if the corn is going for silage or whole ear/kernel. the longer a field stands the more area a deer has to hide. look at the 60 acres of corn as 60 acres of woods. the deer can stay there and never be botherd. but when its cut they are forced to find cover.

well someone shot a bear here a few years ago before the season was open in the town news spread and he was caught even though he was hush hush about it . taxidermists get visits from dec all the time and every bear is checked and if your name is on tag your responsible for reporting it, dec showed up in 16 hrs from when I called mine in last year.. So if loss of licence, fines, loss of gear (everything confiscated) and being watched on probation for years is worth it for you go ahead, It is not worth it to me. the dec wants to see site of kill, remainder of gut pile, ect in poaching cases. and you will need a lot of help to get it out so unless you are a taxidermist yourself, don't allow any pics to be taken, can silence your friends and anyone that would be involved , my suggestion is not too....

paddled both and both are easy to use, canoe is better for carrying gear period . think of a kayak as sitting on top of a plank, indians built dugout canoes for a reason or thye could of just sat on a log and paddled...

Questions about new food plot sites
G-Man replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
spray it with 2/4/d and roundup(or similar ) this will do the most to kill off multiflora rose and its roots(spray the edge of the plot as well to control runners) rye, oats, winter wheat, turnip.buck wheat. they will all grow, even if you didn't get soil test done. anything is better than nothing!! -
look like fallow deer.

It failed miserably!!
G-Man replied to RangerClay's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Well the problem is the dec is controlled by legislature, should be it own seperate entity like game commision in pa, dnr in ohio. you can't manage something if your ability to do so is hampered by politics!!!!!! crossbow, special seasons(youth hunt),game harvests shoould all be controlled by dec, fact is they aren't and its sad. 90% of the argumentive post on this site would dissappear if they in fact had authority to manage game. -
I have had my property logged several times, tops are a good thing and make dens for fox. bear, coyote,as well as new growth for deer, grouse, rabbit. The biggest thing is to have the cull trees (firewood /low dollar) cut! !!!! over 80% of nys forests have been highgraded, i am now in the process of removing"junk trees" from my newest purchase of land. its been 2 years 1500 cord of wood so far and 2 more to go at least! 120 acres of high graded forest in need of a lot of tsi . Finding a person just to do firewood is hard and i hold on to the one i have tighter than i care to admit, you won't get rich but a forester or reputable logger/firewood man will be your best friend, 20 years from now my woods will be a top dollar timber and habitat forest, just in time for retirement !

i set 30 plus stands all hangon every year, rapid rails are the way to go or a similar sectional ladder section. the sticks i have are nice but do limit you to having one side of a tree limb free. hangons will become the best thing you've boughten for hunting.!! its better to be in a limb filled twisted tree in a hangon 15 yards from the trail you want to hunt than looking for a perfect tree for a climber that maybe too far for a quick clean harvest! (sorry for the rant i know some people love their climbers, but you are really limited with them, as opposed to hanging a stand leaving it and quietly asending it without having to pack it in and out.) if your worried about someone usuing it just chain the platform in an upright position rendering the stand unusable to anyone but you.

Good year for apples?
G-Man replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
should be good as long as we don't end up with dought conditions. fruit and nuts are set and developing nicely. -
late season crops(brassicas) are the way to go especially if you have thermal cover near by. thats another whole topic right there..Who has / has made/planted thermal cover ....lol
