-
the lower jaw is broke cause its the only shot i had when it charged out from under a tree top while tracking!!

Got my first bear today and first off my property, bottomed out my scale at 350 with head still on ground. Had to track it and that led to two charges. very exciting and. scary at same time

Well I'ved owned my property for 20 hunting seasons now. Much has changed been improved and grown up. Passed a milestone this year taking the 300th deer off the property with the first deer of gun season, and added a few more in the last two weeks. Some large bucks and a lot of smaller ones have been taken as well as the plentiful doe! The Basic group is ten hunters, with occasional guests. Most are friends and family and all have helped reach this milestone and looking back at the logbook and reading the stories bring back a flood of memories. How many out there keep records for their camp? Do you manage your land or just let nature take its course? Camp is the main reason i seem to hunt now and my camp lost a good friend and hunter to a freak accident this summer a man taken way to early in life who touched countless peoples lives threw his teaching and coaching. He is the second of the first hunters to pass and i am afraid he won't be the last as several are approching advanced age. They are of course given the best stands close to the cabin and my main goal is just to keep them hunting. the knowledge, and the stories they have are amazing! Best of luck the rest of the season to all those who cherish their camp!!

If you have a fairly close buck to doe ratio the rut is short and sweet if your there when it happens, if you have a lot of doe it can be long and drawn out putting a lot of pressure on the bucks. This year seeking seemed to hit nov 1- 5th, with the most tending/chasing nov 12-22. this was in 9w on fairly well managed private land.

Well here when it snows the patterns shift, they leave the ridge tops and side hill and head toward benches(hidden from the road) and creek/brush bottoms or lagre pine/spruce stands that have limbs within 10' of the ground. most doe seem to bed under lone white pine trees in goldenrod/brush fields as long as limbs come 4' or less from the ground(trees are about 20-25 ft tall.) other favorite bedding is on south slopes under beach/oak brush or dogwood thickets. It takes a day or two after the first snow accumulation before they venture out and make new trails. Take note of any winter trails you find they will be used year after year when it snows. (hunting and scouting are not a 1 season activity) you can learn a lot by following these trails late winter and learning late season bedding/feeding areas that are used year after year. just don't plan your october bowhunt by what you find in winter....

9w we have 4in of snow, only deer seen were jumped out of their beds, 1st snow of the year screws them up for a day or two bucks by themselves.

The guys and myself did well fist 3 days, a 10pt,9pt,two 7pt, a 5pt and a spike. for the buck, 3 doe. Watched lots of shoving matches and chasing all weekend. one bear was sighted 50 yrds but the hunter(he's only 16) was to scared to shoot(as bears eat people... too much ttv i guess) . neighbors did well too, taking an 8 and 4pt and doe. Was glad to see the rut in full swing area 9w

I don't know,i eat first then go out, i find hunting pretty easy round here, as for state land hanging bog, cranberry hollow (lot of people think they are in cuba) lots of land lots of deer.

smokless powder is much higher pressure, so i can see the kreiger blowing/ bulging. most other front stuffers are tested at double the max load for proofing of the barrel. my max load for my inline is 150grain, i only shoot 90gr. so tested for 300grain my load doubled is 180.. barrel won't blow but hurts shoulder like heck, like shootin a 425 grain bulled at 90 grain instead of 225 grain i normally shoot. best to pull the bullet or remove breech, but i have done this and shot with a side lock, blow back pressure is the problem, has so much recocked the hammer fully. i'll pull it next time..

You can find good land to own relitively inexpensive depending where you live or are will ing to travel, i have bought land for as little as 300.00$ an acre and as expensive as 1250.00$ i started small and have been able to add on every few years. Its let you do what you want when u want. The timber pays my taxes for up to 5 years at a time, logging selctive every 10 years or so. I personally would stay away from a lease, as unless you can ty it up long term it is tough to mannage, you do all the work for years, food plots,,trail ect. and then its pulled from under you by a higher offer... Best option is to own or find a landowner in the off season and get permission, then go out of the way to help with hay, electric, general work/ maintance around the the property before you hunt, show you appreciate and respect the land owner and you have a place to go for a long time! possible with the option to buy it at some point.

@ Elmo I love it!! one of my friends just bought oneas well.Doesn't kick, have taken wildboar with it , elk , and 12 deer, let friend borrow it for bear(knocked that one dead as well). best gun and caliber for anything in north america under 250 yards. ( i enjoy getting close, big difference from being a good shot or a good hunter)

colder would be better, wind from wrong direction, prefer cloudy... but i'll be out anyway

@ irish redneck , i'd look at a sm. field cultivator, and a sprayer/weed wiper, bushel spreader(hand seeders work but get into bigger plots you'll want one) for that tractor.Have never seen a good plot done from start to finish with just an atv(not enought hp or weight)its not the great recently plowed soil you see the ads on tv show the atv turning so nicely. Releasing your fruit trees is a good idea as well as pruning in winter(arborday association has a pretty east to understand diagram on its site if you've never done it before. you can also fertalize the wild trees that seem to be good producers and are in advantagoous spots to hunt.,with tree fert stakes or loose 12-12-12 or 10-10-10.

Anything is better than nothing, if surrounded by farmers field , look to grow something that matures later or woud be available year round for late season hunting brassica,clover/chicory for example. Fruit/nut trees are good but get varieties that mature (drop at different times). Do not remove that tangeled mess you cant walk into to put a foodplot in (its prolly a bedding area).

Yep, a rareity a huter hunting off the ground......

Set your stand where u want if you happen to see another hunter in the other stand, tell them you are the only one with permission as far as you know according to the landowner. I'd also lock your stand. You might find out it is another neighbor that hunts there knowing that the owner doesnt care or maybe they asked years ago and the owner has forgotton. Some times its better to make friends than enemys. You may need to recover your game from another property and it would burn the bridge before it can be built.

Little ones crazy now , big ones are alone and cruseing.. can't say i've seen any chasing yeat but its close as does have vacated the fields sick of being harrassed by bucks..

Sounds like you have only told part of the equasion, the other hunters that hunt there have probably taken more doe,and the small rag horn bucks you have been passing. you can't see their genetics but prolly got a few lousy doe genetics out of the herd unknowingly. as for traits i have seen it here and have seen them change over a 20 year period as well. do i target cull bucks?.. no but i try to take mature deer. if they are mature and small racked they get shot same as a large rack buck. but we really saw an improvement in size of bucks and points when we started hammering the does. Less compeition for food habitat is really the biggest factor i believe. but we did target a 3 yr old plus spike for several years and iut was shot by a neighbor when it was 5 or 6. still a spike. maybe it was just a feel goo thing but i felt better about the herd after it was removed...

nice! get 'em anyway you can! i prefer a much less costly method myself but to each his own....lol! glad your ok and just your truck is damaged...

Good new is fall flocks tend to roost in same area for days/weeks. you still can get a crack at them .but its not like spring get as close as you can ,or bust em out of the trees and call the scattered flock back. good luck!

You can sit all day but if your moving/smell your chances go down dramatically. deer are not like small game they care and use there nose and eyes very efficiently. large well worn trails are usually not the best to sit on especially after leaf drop. look for a fainter trail 40-100 yards further back in the cover. your shooting lanes and legnth will decreese but would you rather just see deer far away(open woodsremember if you can see them at 100 yrds then they can see you and probably further..) or have a chance at a deer you might see coming(10-30 yards in thick cover)?
