From north blowing south... hope it helps, wind way more important than scent control or camo......

Head back out and look again, try going in opposite direction with your circles, i've walked by dead deer several times that were only visible when i looked behind me. Birds coyotes should be on the carcass by now, they should be squawking and making a pretty good fuss. By now. Tracked a doe a buddy shot on a tuesday in a snowstorm (dumped 3 ft of snow on it)and found it on sat am. Was frozen and we were able to use the meat from it . Temps against you in this case but finding the carcass even if unusable can point you in a direction if you ever have the bad luck of hitting another poorly again. Its amazing how deer seem to die in the same area when wounded year after year...if you hunt the same area it will give you an idea of where they seem to go when u lose them. Tracking and woodsman ship skills are acquired this way! Let alone it might reveal bedding areas, mature buck bedding areas and trail you can put to use in future years! I use to track ever unpressured deer i got in snow backwards from where i shot it for hundred of yards... you learn a lot that way about your hunting area and the way its used by game!

New york is blessed with many statelands and almost all have an abundance of turkey! Though fall hunting is harder than spring especially for a gobbler! The nice part is hens are legal in fall! The area you are from or expect to hunt would be helpful for more detailed tips and advice!

Some doe always are ready early... no everything follows our predictions.

How llong did you wait before you went to look initially? that deer is dead for sure ,but if you went in to fast you may have bumped him a lot farther than he would of went. 4 hrs is a good wait for liver hit, 8 hrs is better for a gutshot... hope you find it!! Hope deer search isn't busy to help you, if so time to start a body search..

I blieve that anyone who takes a long shot will tell you it is only under ideal circumstances. As for hunting situations, i know some great shots(jr and senior oliimpic shooters) that can out score me any day on a range . but cant hit the broadside of a deer at 20 yards. I see the same with some gun hunters even with their high priced low light scopes. You must be confidant to take a long shot both in your equipment, conditions, and ability. how do you get there? Practice!!!!!! and learning to harvest game!! How many have you have shot a good buck and will hear from someone looking at it in the back of your truck say.. i don't think i could of even got off a shot at something that big! Would of been frozen or shaking like a leaf! obviously they should not be the one trying a 50 yard or even a 35 yard shot.

I have shot several deer over 50 yards, it takes practice, confidance and woodsmanship skills. I started practicing for a 50 yards after i kept seeing a 10pt cross an open field many ,many times. I do recomend you kill a few deer "to get some under the belt" as to know how to control buck fever. I always try to find a way to get closer, stalking , ground hunting, changing set ups . but some time s you need to be able to shoot a bit further than normal. For those of you that scream ethics, ethis are a personal matter.I'm sure many of you have abilities i lack as, i know i have some that you aren't as good at.I have no problem with far shots and i am quite comfortable with them. but i will not take on in the woods,at alert deer, or on an extreemly windy day, That said PRACTICE!! become extreemly familiar with your equipment (so much so you can tune it yourself) check arrows and broadhead allignments so they are perfect(inserts are not always in line with the shaft) check fletchs to make sure they are on properly and secure. An arrow out of the box is rarely ready to put a broadhead on to take hunting for a long shot. And most important know where the deer goes when you shoot! learn to track. Most deer i see get away from a long shot are lost because the shooter doesn't know how far away the game was or how to find where it was standing when shot. tough to track if you don't have inital sign. this is especially true in gun at long 100 yrd plus shots. I have helped a neighbor find his deer many times because he finds no blood, only to have me walk 50 yards further and find where he actually shot it at. then finding the deer 50 yards away double lunged.I wonder how many deer are lost because a hunter cant find where the actuall deer was at longer ranges? easy to do on a close shot ..much harder on a far one.

questions about brassicas plots
G-Man replied to mxsmitz201's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
in areas where other food is plentiful deer will ignore brassicas till late season, where food is scarce they will hit them hard. I have one field knee high pretty much untouched, but 1.5 miles away all that is left is the bulbs in another field. Personal experiance 2 years and every deer in the woods will know what your brassicas are for. -
Not a failure, its called in season scouting.. get in earlier and wait. Might not even be same deer you jumped 2nd time. Set up legally hope they come in range if not watch the area where u jumped them. See if you can see them enter or exit it. When u do find a legal spot and set up there. The next day or when ever you can before leaves drop and their patterns change!

I would stay with soft contact calls this early, even some very light ticking of horns (like 2 small bucks just trying them out for the 1st time

Hoping to get one of these boys in the mornin'!
G-Man replied to Renegade Hunter's topic in Bow Hunting
If they were at my place they most likely would be good 2.5 year olds or poor 3.5. But my property has been under management since 95' -
Looking into the legality of food plots.
G-Man replied to lsnydes's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Food plots are grown and can fail, placing food in a pile or scattered in an area is considered baiting. And if your placing it in a cut corn field and it is not from loss of harvest that is considered baiting as well. Just ask any goose hunter that has been fined because when the farmer loaded his wagon and spilled a pile on the ground it is now considered bait! Drawing deer to a specfic spot and re applying food to that spot is baiting. So once your food plot is cleaned out it cannot be refreshed.. or it is baiting. -
red squirrels for sure!

Looks like the Columbus Day Youth season is on!
G-Man replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Deer Hunting
Don't think they get spooked by all the weekend warriors coming down on weekends for the previous month, hammering up stands, hanging stands, ladders, cutting their firewood for season, starting fires cause its chilly at night, riding their atvs out in the woods, scouting, taking the kids and dogs out for a walk in the woods? Not to mention an increase in traffic on roads while out spotting, or just getting to camp? Deer know season is comming just by the increase in human intrusion into their world for the whole month before. The extra hunter in the woods will just be the same as before opening day of regular firearms season. Beside, small game, phesant hunters, duck and goose hunters being out as well. It won't change things much if at all.... -
Yes just the skull plate could roll in or out, its why many leave the skull intact untill measured or it is braced so inside spread doesn't shrink or grow. But in older bucks it is usually fully fused seam, its much more plyable in a younger deer. Such as game farm deer. Or phenom 2 or 3 year olds.

I've heard and read the same thing (whitetail visions (barry wensel) had this in a video years ago) 18-32 yards aim low (lower 1/3 of the body). closer and farther the seem not to react to shot. Deer can drop its entire body height in 1/10 of a second About 16-20 inches. Amazing reaction time and the first thing it does is drop straight down. so even though it seems its running rt or lft its' actually straight down first...

The DEC takes in account hunter satisfaction, and insurance accident reporting in its management plan. To manage deer in this state to a true qdm level will not happen anttime soon. so numbers are moot point. Local numbers can vary from mile to mile and a management area is huge. so stop bashing the dec they do what they can with avaible funds and human resourses. If your not seeing a lot of deer in your area stop shooting does. want older bucks its a gamble.. let em pass, the neighbor might get them. Available habitat and cover differ as well will 600 acres of farmland and 40 acres of woods hold as many deer as 300 acres of field and 300 wood 40 of swamp? I guess what the point is , you yourself and your neighbors can be better managers of your own herd than the state can be.

Some pics - These two bucks are not the same are they?
G-Man replied to burmjohn's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
same buck brows tip it off the best, thats why its so hard to score a buck when they post 1 pic of it. hidden points are tough and always look a little wider from the back.. -
scientifically all whitetail deer ar esupose to be 8 pts. they grow bigger just as you develop muscles as you grow a 12 year old kid is like a 1.5 year old buck. 2.5 is like a 16 year old ,3.5 22year old . 4.5 is like a late 20's early 30's adult. A lot of breeding is done by 1.5 yearolds, and as the bucks get older less is done by the respective age classes. it is not nessary to have mature deer in the herd for rproductive purposes. As for the number of deer it is irrelevant, how many hunters do you have per square mile? a large take will hurt more than ar's can help as you will highgrade the herd quickly. the giant 4pts and 6pts in my area are proof of that..untouchable by 4 pt a side. my area 640 acres has a buck take of almost 12 per square mile. every 8 and better is shot. leaving inferior genetic less and 7pts remain to grow old. You are much better off learning to judge a deer's age on the hoof try to shoot 4.5 year olds regardless of horn size. that is the main reason i am against mandatory ar's in ny. we did our volentarily and took us several more years to straighten it back out. qdm is not ar's it is an entire method of habitat and deer/ non game management. Stop thinking of ar's as the salvation open your eyes and look at the whole picture!!!

problem is a 1.5 year old buck will dispurse, leaving you with no 2.5 year old buck cause he's is down on the neighbors or miles away.if you don't have the habitat the deer will move to areas that do, several miles away in the case of bucks, land ownership in the state consists of many small landowners. imposing rules regulations on them is the same as being taxed without representation.. no wonder people are against ar's. even if the make great sence on paper enacting them is a whole different ball of wax.... education will be the only way this changes and you cannot bend everone to your way of thinking..impossible. do what you can on your own, recruit like minded neighbors.. we have enough rules and regs in this state already!!
