Well think about this its been very warm and a great year for apples but instead of freezing and deer eating them they are fermenting. which leads to drunk deer, grouse and turkeys, yes alcohol affect them as well. I seen deer just wandering around almost stumbling and if they're drunk enough they just lay down and don't move ... kind of like young people partying all night and sleeping in.... lol

Dave6x6 yes i have a few big ones on camera saw the big 10 pt opening morning of gun at 7am 50 yards over the neighbors property line..had to let it walk as i don't have permission to hunt there and wasn't sunrise either although i could clearly see it as it stood for a minute while chasing a doe. These are from a group of 8 guys plus 2 kids. It sounds crazy but we have taken 263deer off this property since 93' 83 being antlered bucks. and yes there were a lot of small ones...

Hope it gets cold and hunt the food!! get back in 50- 100 yards on a trail leading to it and be extremely still and quiet!

Well so far this season we have taken 4 buck and 6 doe of the property, Highlights included a nice 8 taken with bow a friends best buck so far. and a friends daughter's first deer a nice fat doe that just flopped to her complete amazement and startled gasp of holy crap! The rest othe the buck were a half rack 8 and a 4pt and a spike!. Athe the doe taken so far have been adults. Almost everyone has meat in the freezer so far. with 2 exceptions. A friends son who hasnt taken a shot yet, and another friend who missed 4 buck and a doe with bow long story but he needed to practice sitting while shooting a bow and it wasnt untill season was almost over before we figured out what he was doing after treaing his bow and sights down several times tryin to find the problem!! . With 1 more week and my favorite muzzloader season coming we should be able to reach the target of 10 doe and 6 buck failry easily. I'm finially over this infection and strained ligaments so i am looking to getting most of the rest of the season in!!

Fell in love with a Belgian....

I've always liked the brownings, i have several of the early bps's . game gun, uplander, and regular bps's look like they hit a home run again! -
Well after watching 3-4 different roadhunters driving around the roads by my house and my neighbor actually watching them kill a deer.I tried to get a plate numbers but was unsucessful as they have mud and cardboard over the plate and drive away like a bat out of hell....Finially i decided to contact the dec I did this via a form on the internet and it was very easy and i was exceedingly pleased with the fast response. Simple descriptions of the trucks and cars along with a few other neighbors deciding to file complaints seem to have worked so far as there are now sherffs and troopers as well as dec vehicals driving around the area. I really wish they would of put out a decoy... maybe they will later.. Just happy to see the system working..

I like little bucks and so do a lot of other people i even like the storys of how they got them, i like medium bucks and big bucks as well, and not to mention doe!!! it will be a shame if a law has to be written to impose ones beliefs on another.... As for bitching about illegal taking or tagging of or bringing a question into light about a harvest.(kill) remember it was posted here volentarially and everyone even moderators are entiled to questions and opinions!!

i have taken 2 grouse this year while deer hunting, this was done with them sitting on the ground and shooting them in the head with my rifle, tough to do but good eating. I own my own property and am disturbing noone, i wouldn't recommend taking bird shot with you when hunting a simple mistake could be made either shooting a deer with birdshot or game with a slug. and im not even sure if it is legal to carry both with you. If you find a good area for squirrel take a day or and afternoon and hunt them!

Hawthorn, Hackberry, Hazelnut
G-Man replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Hazelnuts need alot of sun and great growing conditions ex..ph ballance..the deer and squirrels wiped most of mine out. i like the chestnut, were once considered a weed tree,as the grew in every hedge row. i have about 10 that have sprouted from squirrel planted nuts and at 4 years old? maybe 5 or 6 as i didnt plant them but noticed them 2 years ago produced some nuts this year, best of all they perfer acid soil so no extra soil prep! planted mine in an old pine plantation and they took off! Oaks can and do lose bud to from nuts due to a late frost besides being cyclical... most people think oak because they never saw or read up on chestnuts..in the 1800's 1 in every 4 trees was a chestnut!! oaks were only able to compete due to the loss of chestnut to blight... Maybe the passenger pigion wasn't just hunted to extinction but loss off food/ habitat..... lot of food dissapeared with the chestnut... -
amazing how the big ones seem to survive.....

Hawthorn, Hackberry, Hazelnut
G-Man replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Hazelnuts are good if you can keep the squirrels away from them, i prefer chestnuts myself, the are many varietys available, look for crosses with american though as it is truly a forest tree, while pure chineese are an orchard tree. The American chestnut foundation, wild turkey federation also have and sell seedlings as well. You can get pure american fron your countys soil and water conservation district as well. these will eventully die in 15-20 years but will produce and grow back from stumps readilly. -
I Agree with the legality of it but i feel you really need to try and get along with your neighbors. A quick example is a person i know bought a large piece of property 250+ acres and posted it i asked if he went and met the neighbors to which he said no i own enough of my own land i don't need theirs. The first opening day he sees a guy cuttin the the corner of the property, chases him down with a 4 wheeler and kicks him off saying can't you read signs? next time he'll prosecute. Well the following year he shot a great 12 pointer and it crossed over the propertyline. Funny thing is it ran on to the property of the guy he thru off the previous year who didn't let him retrive the deer.. After much ranting calling the dec ect the guy still wouldnt give up the deer(his property) turns out this guy owned 300 + acres in the shape of an L around the guy i know. he cut the corner of the field to get to his stand rather than walk thru the loud brush/woods. Instead of finding out why/who the guy was and maybe letting him cross for permission to retrive deer. he made an enemy still to this day. Its funny how a sit down vist before the season laying out ground rules/expectations may have avoided the whole thing.. to late after accuzations start flying unless some one is the bigger man.

For the powerline ..First year try a grain with red clover mix, buckwheat and clover, oats n clover ect. this will help break down the soil and provide free nitrogen whn plowed under the next year. For the swampy area if your modivated and not afraid of a little longer term committment you could plant white ceder. this is a great winter food source and theermal cover and it stands up to flooding quite well. The big investment you need to spend on to do this is welded steel fencing, 2x4 or 4x4 placed in 3 ft hoops 5 to 6 ' tall around the young plants and staked. White ceder(arborvite) is an all time favorite deer food(just ask anyone who has problems with deer eating their bushes in the winter. Its is a long term commitment but will yeild great results with little soil disturbance. Like planting apple trees. take a few year to fill the cages but the deer will eat any limbs that stick through and by protecting the trunk and main limb they will be continual deer feeders for generations. Another tree to think about planting is american chestnuts or chestnut hybrids. they produce in 3-5 years and grow like weeds, dont flower till july and never lose a crop due to frost.

WHen the snow is deep the trails leading to the cornfields are great spots for cams. But bucks will die over winter anywhy even if the made it thru gun. you wnat a good estimate get those cams out in the spring may and june!! yes they just start growing but you can tell a good buck pretty easily by june.

Well i play devil advocate here..so he got a 4 pt off your place now he's done hunting. is a deer worth the aggrovation? Let him know you know and be done with it. The deer may of ended up crossing the fence anyway. If it were me id let him know that what is good for the goose is good for the gander, either you can co exist in harmony or be stressed and woried about someone getting your deer... I try to get along with my neighbors and have a stand on a propertyline over looking the land next to me which was sold, the new owner was pissed the stand was there i explained he was welcome to hunt the stand anytime he wanted as was the previous owner(its the only tree over looking a brushy area). Seemed to diffuse the situation he's hunted it 3 years in a row opening day of gun now. Some people are just over protective of "their" deer if your not enjoying it then you need to change, did it ruin your morning hunt?. A good sit down and drink talking with the neighbor might be the right thing just my opinion.. .

Well strangest think i ever saw leaving the deer woods was 2 guys dragging a goat and tying to their car to take to the check station before heading back to buffalo. They were very proud of their spike!! lol... happened in east otto about 20 years ago..

Turkey hunting is a 1/2 hr before sunrise and after sunset in fall, just wondering if i can see a beard on a bird a 1/2 hr before in the spring why is the deer season sunrise/sunset instead of a half hr before or after? Antlers are a lot easier to see than a 4 in beard on a jake! Maybe a change in the hunting times is in order? How or why was the decision made for sunrise/ sunset anyway? Then the whole 5 min before or after is moot. seems like an almost impossible law to enforce anyway... Although i dont think i've ever hear a shot more than a half hr before im sur eit happens. I'd like to set up a vote to see how many would support a 1/2 hr before and after vs keeping it the way it is but i'm not that computer savy..

Question regarding food plots
G-Man replied to agross's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
yes, imagine yourself finding a new resturant and then bringing back your friends a few days weeks later... same happens in the deer world, next year,or months go by and they look for that food source again and bring offspring / other herd members... bear do the samething remembering the food location for next years feed fest before hibernation -
Every Deer killed is a trophy to the person who shot it!! please keep this in mind when you look a some 14 year olds or (anyone's) button buck, or doe or 6pt yearling. If it doesn't meet your own personal standards, congradulate the person in a sincere mannor and just walk away.... I get sick seeing some teliing the person who shot it what did you shoot that dog for? Hey they wanted it they shot it!! Belittling someone only seems to cause more problems than it solves. Now if its to you own members at camp a little razzing may be in order in good taste

Wow, that should win a prize in some wierd contest!! def looks to be an undevelloped 5th leg... like dom said partial absorbed twin??

In the morning I hunt a pressure funnel that connects to a 60 acre sancutary. The sm camps south of me push the deer here consistantly i've seen up to 37 buck and over 60 doe come thru in a few hours on some great opening days..best part is it all happens before 10 am! so a nice lunch back in camp is in order. If i didn't see what i wanted in the am to shoot i hunt a trail to food coming from the sanctuary..

Defined by dec tables in reg book .... I am not adding gas to a fire... , but turkey and all other hunting in the state seems to be a 1/2 hr berfore sunrise and a 1/2hr after sunset. Now that the state is equalizing starting dates maybe it time to standardaize the start/end hunt times. Face it there is light enough to see a turkey's beard 1/2 hr before i sure as heck could see a deer thats 100x larger.....
