They don't get big by being dumb... i put my bet on that deer never being shot by a legal hunting methods...

The boost clover will get from the nitrogen is minimal to the boost it will give dormant weed seed. most clover is innoulated and it starts to fix nitrogen very redially. A lot depends on the soil if it is that poor it might be nessary for a larger planting. 30 x 30 ill try and have the clover as the only plant able to grow weeds grow a lot faster.

Orchard Growers removing deer habitat
G-Man replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
The new orchards need the fencing to keep bucks from rubbing and killing the young trees. older orchards were established before the deer populations were so high more than likely. Cost of fencing is high, although i understand there are grants and programs available for just this prpose. As for changing the patterns yes they do! sometimes you can use it to your advantage if you can hunt adjoining properties. -
Try and get a white clover, local agway will sell small amounts, as will a lot of local feed mills. 30 x 30 is only a handfull of seed. you might want to see if a friend or farmer has a small amount you can buy. DON'T OVER SEED!! clover is small and if you want to see the seed on the ground you have to look close..if you can see it standing up you put to much down, and it won't grow as well as it should!

5$ a hide for adult, 3$ for yearlings. taxidermy capes are completely different....

thats what i think dropped one side... get him next year!!!

I've killed birds with it , with todays super tight chokes i find i need to kill a bird between 30-60 yrds. its to tight under 30 almost like shooting a slug at 20 yrds. went back to lead my max range is the same, i can shoot under 20yrds and i save a alot of $. not worth the price in my opinion for 1 box i got a specialty choke for lead and save the $.

I only kept my sheds from bucks i killed.. most others are now turkey calls or dog chew toys.. i like em but no room to keep em around. Great collections... ever find the same buck for several years? i have only done that once 3 sheds from the same buck over 5 years...

Doing anything is better than nothing, yes there are a lot of specfic clovers developed for deer. but there are a lot of deer that still feed in a farmers hay field after those "cattle " forages. The only way for these specialty seed blends to out draw natural forage is for the conditions to be perfect for them. For 90% or more of food ploters they do not have the equipment nessary or extra $ to do it proffessionally. I recomend doing what you can afford. face it if you do a 30x30 spot perfect it will draw deer and dissappear fast maybe before you can even hunt it .but 2 acres of an affordable seed and prep will last a lot longer. White clovers draw better than red. Do what you can afford to do to the best of your ability. i personally would rather do a larger plot without top $ seed then only be able to afford a small plot that may be eaten down before season comes. Every property is different and what may draw on one may not be the draw on another, if your surrounded by ag cornfields, planting corn probably wont help you. same as clover /alfalfa fields, planting more clover wether whittail specfic or not will not be as big a draw as a different planting. everyone gets sick of the same thing all the time, deer do to..

First pics from this year's carcass pile
G-Man replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
probably after bones, meat, anything that will contain minerals or protine. i have watched deer pick up and eat dead fish lying on top of the ice from ice fishermen leaving small fish and dead bait. they seem to devower them with great enthusiasm. -
a 30 x 30 plot is pretty small... just about anything you plant will be devowered before hunting season. Your best bet will probably be a clover mix. this can be done by raking leaves/debri out of the area and scratching the ground to allow good soil to seed contact. Now before someone jumps in with soil test!!! Antthing you do will be better than nothing. if you spray the area with a round-up type vegitation killer and let it burn down a week or two and remove the dead vegitation"weeds". your plot will last longer. this seed is small and you won't need to till..just scratch well. if you have means to add lime as a liquid or pellet do so in amount recomended by test. almost all soil in nys is acidic. if no test a bag or two spread and raked in will work as a starting point. do not add fertalizer with nitrogen. a 0-10-10 or 0-15-15 will work. n-p-k n being nitrogen should be zero. its the simplist way to start a small food plot i know of.

Archery yes, gun no way....

an excavated pond can be as big as you want if its a dammed pond(dike) then you can only impound a million gallons of water approx an 1-2 acre average depth 6'.with out and engineering study. as for a stream running in and out.. it will fill your pond with sediment. The dec is not really involved. but contacting your local soil and water conservation district . will tell you if it is a protected stream. give you a list of certified excavators. a pond off to the side of the stream will be better than one going thru it. for the $ or time you spend you don't want it filled up in to a year or two. plus soil and water may give you options to enter different programs that pay for part or all of the cost of putting the pond in as well as issue you a permit for stocking and fishing your own pond with out a licence!

What is the reason for owning a firearm that holds more then 5 rounds?.
G-Man replied to Gthphtm's topic in General Chit Chat
old worn out document??? move to africa/serbia/iraq then. Or where ever you believe you ancesters came from, surrender your guns and live in peace...your government there that is so progressive will protect you -
This is why ny should adopt a split season for bow and gun. give the deer a chance to return to normal... takes would be higher and more enjoyment would be had.. can u imagine 2 openings for gun.. it be like christmas every time!! 2 openings for bow ? more people would be out resulting in greater deer movement! oh well its only a pipe dream....
-
10 % of hunters take 90 % of the deer...legally or illegally i don't know how many hunters as it not stated.. there is not enough enforcement of laws now ..and i dont see it changing anytime soon. if 2 -4 guys they would be caught in a search of tags by any dec officer...oh yeah 1-2officers per county...like that will ever happen better chance of winning powerball.... The biggest problem is they get away with it and someone hears about it and they then do or try to do the same....

Never had problems, take the time to introduce yourself to the neighbors that are year round residents, they are great watchers and can become good friends. a lot are a little hesitant about a city person but if you gain their trust you can get free security and meet a lot of good people from the area, that my benifit you when you need a hand/work done. Do NOT ever put a chain up Across the driveway!!! this is a huge tip off to i'm not home!!! the locals down here know exactly who is out by the chain's being up. and know wether they can hunt/tresspass or not by it... your better off having a good neighbor drive in and out leaving tracks, and randomly coming down on off days during the week.

Poplar trees as a food source?
G-Man replied to Fantail's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I know the aspen "weed" trees are the best thing to have around for roughed grouse. as their buds are prefered as long as the tree isnt to high , about 10-30 ' is perfect. as for deer they like the red maple /oak/ clover over about anything here. -
Since when is a 12" knife used in hunting?? hunting knife??? I can't imagine trying to gut anything with a 12" knife... Glad she protected herself! feel bad hunting was even mentioned in the story.. maybe a 12" butcher knife ..... then every one could hade butchers instead of hunters...

What is the reason for owning a firearm that holds more then 5 rounds?.
G-Man replied to Gthphtm's topic in General Chit Chat
Virgil, there are millions of guns and clips that exist already exceeding this propoasl , stopping manufacturing will do nothing. Public Hanging /executionof the criminial that use these in a crime would maybe deture others from using these in a crime. there is no way to recall/collect all existing clip/mags guns. Feel good legislation.... thats all this is -
Poplar trees as a food source?
G-Man replied to Fantail's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Again the iist for nys is aspen / poplar ...not tulip treeor yellow poplar this is called tulip poplar it is not the same tree! tulip is a hard wood and can be used as trim and firewood, the poplar /aspen most of us are familiar with is a softwood and is terrable firewood and is used only as pulp. they are not common in my area but are found in ohio where i work quite commonaly. check a tree book...... tulip have waxy large leaves that look like the profile of a tulip... again maybe they are a food source in pa and other states where they are more common. -

So limit mag capacity..how many millions of guns have mags or clips that exceed this now?. there is no way to enforce this law it just feel good legislation. Something someone who has no understanding of the general gun owner, proposed to show their tough on crime! be tough on the criminials that use/do illegal activities not the weapon or choice ot tool they use to commit them. next they will be banning rocks because criminials use them to break windows...how would they enforce that...
