  1. i would go with 3 1/2 for the 8pt.. kinda short brows.. 125-130 my guess. the 9 is maybe 4 1/2 more mass deeper thicker body than 3 1/2 with deductions for typical low 130's
  2. this area always has a scrape so i put a cam up...
  3. nice! i always seem to catch one or two on camera..
  4. Just watch if you go with crabapples as many varieties are now fruitless flowering ornimental trees... they'll look nice in the woods but not what u want to hunt over
  5. Try to get the largest you can afford 5-8in is a lot cheaper than 3-4in. plant to the same depth as rootball, and you'll want to fence them. I use 2x4 welded wire 5 or 6' high in at least a 2 ' diameter circle with a wooden stake to hold in place. if you dont use welded wire the deer will simple push in on chicken wire to eat the tender buds, or worse yet rub their horn on them. I also recomend removing the tall grass inside the fences before fall as mice/voles love to nest and girdel the young trees. no place to hide in grass n chew =no damage! A time release fertalizer pack or tree spikes can be used but it takes 1-3 years for a whip to become established to much fet when stressed can kill them. There are lots of varieties. you want to look at when they drop their fruit. example macentosh drop early before bow season late sept. yellow delisious usually mid oct. greenings late nov. Most apples require cross polination so a variety is a good thing for a food plot.. you don't want all the apples dropping at the same time!!! Then you run into sizes (tree sizes not apple) dwarf,semi-dwarf,standard... each grows to a different hight. i would recommend semi dwarf or standard as snow depth is a factor to keep the deer from eating the the tops. A 3-4 " diameter whip will produce in 3-5 years and produce heavy in 6-10years with proper pruning. The national arbor association is a good reference site for tree and pruning info. But i would try to buy your trees localy as they are hardened to the climate where you will be planting them! i'll post a pic of a small orchard i started 5 years ago... when i get a chance..
  6. Depends if you want just deer or sm game as well... 3-4 feet for deer 2 -3 for small game . set at least at a 45 degree angle to a trail , never at 90 degrees...i dont care how fast a trigger speed is you'll miss game.. 45degrees make the activation zone much larger and your subject will most likely be centered.f Food plots and scrapes are fine strait on as deer will be in front of cam feeding or sniffing.
  7. they were probably after trace minerals in the dirt from the fertalizer....
  8. take the doe!! especially if with button bucks!! been doing this for years!! see a lot more yearling bucks as there is no momma to kick them out of the area!! they might eventually leave but i'd rather see yearlings just to keep up my sprits!! T
  9. yes i done it with wildgame innovations and a cuddieback.. th e cuddie got 4x as many pics. slower cameras need to be set up in feeding areas so the target is in front of the camera longer. the faster ones make better trail type cameras but never place any camera at a 90 degree angle across trail!
  10. put it in a spray bottle and spray it into the air makes a great attractant! been doing this since the 80's, bonus is if you get thirsty you have something to drink!!
  11. I have and old field n stream with an advertisement on the back that says PROTECT YOUR SMALL GAME !!! SHOOT ALL STRAY CATS!!! its from the late 30's i believe not very politically correct i'm afraid but mostly true.... makes for great conversation when friends see it.....
  12. OK a few tips/ suggestions.. from almost 20 years of camera use! ( remember the old trailtimers that used a mechanical plunger to push a button on a 35mm cam?or just a thread to let u know when something walked through? i still have mine! ) First i dont like putting my camera on trails.. the deer will learn to use different ones.just to advoid the camera. I do place them on feed/open areas where human presence is more common and they can enter and leave mostly unnoticed. they are great for getting an idea of whats around. I dont check weekly and try to check in the rain.(pull cards). I never place where i want to place a stand! the area i survey with them is easily scouted for trails to and from..the stands are placed further up these trails. I stay out of suspected bedding/staging areas. and concentrate on logging roads and food sources. Like you said doc the activity in the yard is the same just stopped using the trail into it!! So monitor the yard you'll see the same deer and not spook them off the trails. this is the new fad with timed plot watcher cameras... you can do it with older cams just as well if the feed area is small enough or you have enough cams...This is Just what i do to try to keep the woods quiet and natural!!
  13. My 11 year old nephew wants to hunt so bad that he's coming out to sit with me this sunday wont leave my brother alone buggin him when can he go... cant wait till next year to have him hunt turkey this coming spring!!!
  14. met pat rockets thru the site and i know a few people whom i have mutual friends in common with
  15. its not that management is done on the property there are just fewer hunters and lots of does!! they eat everything!! its not far from the no hunting line (west seneca) and the only food left on the block (due to all the development ) is an old apple orchard.. the neighbors all dislike the deer but are elderly and don't hunt anymore themselves so to protect the shrubs and gardens they plant they allow bow hunting just worked out he got a good buck but the main goal is to just reduce the population via concentrating on doe harvest! shooting little bucks does nothing for population control but i also realize you cant not let them shoot a buck if a good one comes along they are doing the bigger favor shooting does!!
  16. Lol I graduated lancaster in 89 and we won state that year! Yeah this isn't far from the park off aurora st.
  17. Looking to get more for 9f ... nov 1 when leftovers are available!!
  18. I would find a spot creek crossing between 1 and 2 along the feeder creek for the swamp and hunt the north side of the creek, there are some islands in that swamp..bet a good buck calls one home.. looks like possible pressure from the east? couple of homes. and from the north east....
