  1. I won't let my friends hunt off my porch... now they want to hang a stand on a tree in the lawn...
  2. nice !! if you can leave the tops you will be better off as they will provide protection from deer grazing the new seedlings as well as browse for this winter... you can also cut some for firewood yourself in situ... draggin whole tops out is usually the way to scar your remaining trees. glad you took a step into tsi!! you wont be sorry
  3. yeah i notice that with bear as well, coyotes n bear on cam = less deer pics.....
  4. I dont get excited about seeing a buck on cam till october.. last year 4 little bucks then the 15th and 5 monsters that continued to hang around and myself and my neighbor got 2 of em'
  5. deer is probably too close..its a problem inherant to ir cameras, that and blurring... try changing your setting, moving further back and lighten the darker image with a photo editing software, or move the camera up the trail so you catch the deer in daylight!... i've said it before i truly dislike ir cameras.....

    Cold-snap Coming

I have snow for bow season every year...not nice as u think id rather have a cold frosty morninig with crunchy leaves than snow even during gun!! i can hear things coming a lot better than seeing them as for tracking....with a good shot nothing ever gets out of line of sight bow or gun.... i'm sure i will have a frost sat night and if they are calling for flurries in higher elevation i will definatly have snow... cuba and case lake are the first to freeze every year...great for ice fisherman bad for growing things...my corn could use a few more weeks to dry down.....
  7. I think the media bombardment of hunting as percieved on tv. had turned a lot of would be hunters off... like they got out sit 45 min and kill a big buck..they got out see nothing and head to the gin mill....enough of this and they're done hunting. The idea is presented that the need priviate land to hunt again media pressure.. to get a big buck and get away fromthe pressure!! when's the last time you saw a hunt on public land featured on tv? As for all the other things kids are involved in soccer/baseball/ karate/ect...welcome to the subburbs... small lots are a way of life there usually fenced.... there is no more stroling down to the end of the street and having a tree fort or a place to hunt on some random farmers land that wasnt posted.... lawsuits and liability put and end to that.... No time or private land to hunt as percieved keeps a lot of people out of starting or getting into hunting... Women may be a great assett though the few i met that have gotten into hunting did it to meet guys or their husband hunts so they want to as well to spend time with them. i'm not sure if they will/do stay with it. I know my friends daughters are going to hunt this year and we've done any and everthing legal to hopfully give them a great experiance!
  8. My place was like that in 93'... lots of does..a small buck now and then. Lots of hunters around. A old doe group will chase out young bucks to keep food to themselves, we try to shoot any doe with twin fawns especially if twin b-bucks. this increased the number of sm.bucks seen the next year as momma wasn't there to chase them off in spring. i can have 10-15 yearling buck in residence every year doing this untill they dispurse in fall . Fact is if no thick cover to hide in and remain undisturbed a two year old will not be there... I large doe group made of greatt grandmothers to this years young doe are a force for any buck to recon with (would you want to be the only guy in a room full of nasty women). old does are nasty. yes the buck will show up to breed them but where is he finding them..a does home range is a lot bigger than 22 acres. so they pick up their doe and run them into thick cover on the neighbors property. Every property is different, to mantain your population that reside on your property habitat and i mean all habitat must be managed, food plots are great..but how many deer do you see standing in the middle of a 20 acre clover field?? In the mid west the deer are in the thick creek bottoms coming to the fields at dusk dawn to feed. So he has apples and a food plot ..the doe will keep these to themselves especially if the bucks have thick cover next to their own food source. I only have his discription of his property to work with..what are his neighbors property's like what are they seeing how much hunting pressure/human intrusion is there.. My best answer is make your property thick as possible, hunt the edges, minimize intrusion(walking the dog/checking cameras).Remove doe!!! Everything changes in time esp when you are talking a decade plus!! just check arial photos they are taken every 5 years or so and compare....

    Bear Hunting

I know they love corn and turnips, i replanted a field of corn this year in spring after 2 bear decided to call it home last fall.. They are back but no longer traveling together(last year i believe their mother just kicked them out at 2 yr olds) and they wern't eligable to shoot in a group... though they were in range numerous times. i believe they are 3 now. and i can't wait for opening day....i'm more excited for bear than deer this year!!
  10. Some years they hit mine way early other years the snow almost has it covered before the show up.....
  11. you say nothings changed in 12 years? i guarentee that your woods have grown some espially ash(fast growing)... bucks like thick cover!! if you can see more than 50 yards its to open. I hear it a lot especially from older hunters who have hunted the same spot for 20 years... I use to see tons of deer now i don't dame guys shot all the does/bucks... truth is the brushy draw they use to hunt has matured and has become more open, the deer are now crossing 100 yrds away in a managed woodland. When easily visiable older deer especially buck will find a thicker less disturbed area to bed in. During the rut a doe will get sick of being harassed and head for thick cover to hide from the wanton ways of a buck after her. During the actualy breeding phase a buck will try to keep his doe in thick cover away from other mararuding bucks! I do some kind of timbermanagement every 5-10 years weather it is lumber removal or firewood removal. yes woods grow that fast!! it may not seem it to you seeing it everyday. Ex... 3 years ago i had 10 acres of redpine removed.(the limbs had died back to 20-30 feet off the ground and covered the forest floor with pine needles) its now saplings or hard wood and pine 1-4' tall lots of browse for deer, lots of top piles to hide in for bear! before i could see 100 yrds thru the woods now i can see 20 ft ! I am now in the process of removing ash and hop-hormbeam(ironwood) anong with less desirable crotched and split hardwood timber, off of 30 acres. I replant with oak, cherry, chestnut, make a small food plot on the loggin roads, or a small orchard on a edge of a opening. UNless you give game a reason to be there during the day, and give them some privacy you will never see what you want. Keep your cameras in easy access area's if your going to check them(roadway edge for example) or only check them once a month. A few cams on 22 acres is a lot i run 10 cameras on 274...
  12. Hope you get a few more to help your farmer out... and yes there is damage from coon, bear, ect but coon and bear will pull down the entire stalk of corn..deer will bite the end of an ear off and do the same to the next 40 stalks... a lot of what a coon will pull down has already been damaged from deer.. they do investigate what is causing the damage before permits are issued... kind of like the grape farmer whose grapes were being eaten by turkey and wanted them all killed.... after investigating 90% of the damage was done by raccoon. turkeys were mostly picking bugs.... a few trappers took care of the problem and made some money doing it..
  13. by neck to let blood drain out of body cavity out the removed bunghole... by legs for butchering...never hang by neck or drag out by neck if getting mounted...
  14. Hate to say it but cat is a coyote favorite food...hope the cat crawled into a hole somewhere and is hiding....
  15. This is at my house in cuba... he's 3 have pics from last year as well....
  16. i find that just exchanging cards works for me so if a camera stays in the "wrong spot "for a week so what.. some times it becomes the right spot..id rather put the money in to more cameras to try out that other area...
  17. A few coyotes hanging around...
  18. nice! i seem to get a few every year..not fights but shoving matches...
  19. thats the case i found with soybeans and turnips as well 1st year kind of untouched..the next year....cant plant enough and it got wiped out...
