I use to try to take my deer opening day, and took quite a few that day but i learned that i like hunting more so i got choosy . Wow i don't think there would be enough room to explain everything to look for.. I actually start my scouting in the spring looking for shed antlers from bucks that made it thru the season.but this is cause i am a hunting nut... I would try to find someone to take you out scouting if possible(a local gunshop/bowshop might have some guys willing to show you. if not.. As a new hunter start looking in late summer out in fields for deer(assuming you have permission to hunt the property already, if not get asking don't wait till right before the season!) Watch where they enter and exit the fields(not sure if your just gun or bowhunting) find where the trails are back in the woods/brush a ways in. you might find old rubs on trees. If you can find a copy of Bowhunting October Whitetails i recomend buying it or watching it it's geared toward bowhunting but principles work in gun season as well(you might find it on an online search) This video taught me more in an hour than you can learn in a year or two.. its from the early 80's and i became a much better hunter after watching it. Its not a killing deer videolike most tv programs now ie.. wow look at what i got..(although they do kill dder) its a very educational video explaining habits, wind, scouting ect. just have to bear the cheezy back ground music... best of luck!

What was the first year of Muzzleloading season in New York?
G-Man replied to Pilgrim's topic in Muzzleloaders
Muzzleloader season in ny started in 1971 or 73 can't quite remember which. You could try back issues of the conservationist for the old stamps. -
Well you can use a hard helical flech now as well.....
-
Window screen material will work but you'll have to check it every year for tears esp if its nylon. 1/4 in welded mesh would work/hold up better. Looks like a nice future orchard.. keep an eye out for tent catipilliars and destroy any nest that appears those little catipilliars will strip a tree quick!

Well that was the nail in the rangers coffin.....bye rangers........
-
Doesn't look good for the rangers.......
-
looks like a car kill....to bad would of been nice to have him around this season....

Ask her to go with you .... tell her most women have a better eye for detail and you could use the help as it would cut down the time needed to cover the area!

Montana Bear Tragedy This is a very sad story about a bear. Everybody should heed the warning to not feed wildlife because they become dependent and cannot forage for themselves anymore. This is such a tragedy to see what they have done to our country's wildlife! The photo below captures a disturbing trend that is beginning to affect US wildlife . . . Animals that were formerly self-sufficient are now showing signs of belonging to the Democratic Party...... as they have apparently learned to just sit on their ass and wait for the government to step in and provide for their care and sustenance. This photo is of a Democrat bear in Montana nicknamed…: Bearock Bearama.

No recharge nessary..... i might look funny driving to work but no $ spent on gas,or electric...run out of water scoop some out of the ditch!!!
-
Ethanol is only viable when made from corn if gas is above 4$ a gallon, so instead of cheap gas we pay 4$. This country is not like europe or any other single county it's huge you can fit all of europe in the notheast! Its a country built on roads... this gas price will destroy our country as it doesn't have the infrastructure to switch back to rail service. At least i see that japan has started building cars that run on water ony 20,000 to be shipped to america... Water we have!! They say it will even run on soda pop! I hope i can hold out long enough to be able to buy one before the gas prices ruin my savings account!

Everytime the Sabres win it rains....Must be the tears of philly fans from heaven...... ;D
-
Awesome ot win!! Advancement looks good on easter sun to next round!
-
A Sabres fan, a Rangers fan, & a Flyers fan are climbing a mountain & arguing about who loves his team more. The Rangers fan insists he is the most loyal. ''This is for the the Ranger's" yells, & jumps off the mountain. Not to be outdone, the Sabres fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells "…This is for the Sabres!" & pushes the Flyers fan off the mountain... LETS GO SABRES!!

At least it wasn't a full draw dryfire... odds are you'll be fine
-
think i'd find a new friend....thats a wopper of an "accident" ......
-
Dryfire will put the energy that was supose to be put into an arrow into the bow itsself. This can cause broken string strands/limb damage(cracks) damage to limb pockets. next time you draw back you bow limbs may explode, string break, ect. the worse that will happen will be impalment by limb pieces or by the arrow itself as it will be knocked off and do a myrad of different things, string may whip and take out an eye or cut the face, arm, just a few worse case examples, none of them good.

Well said Doc! Although i would probably take a long shot again if the conditions were perfect. 99.9% of my shots are under 25yards, its not worth wounding an animal due to a deflection, i hunt in fairly thick woods and 25 yard shots are rare even with trimming shooting lanes.
-
I had a friend dryfire his martin bow 4x in a 2 week span 3-d shooting, no ill effects but he did have it checked to be sure.

I use a fallaway and like it tremendously. I do not have a problem with my arrow falling off the rest(the main reason to get a whisker biscut). I have friends that use a whisker and it does wear especially if you shoot a lot. The fall away doesnt wear nearly as fast as my old flipper fingers(tm hunter) so replacing the shrink tube hasn't been an issue as of yet. And best of all when i finially got it tuned it i did increase my accuracy although by a minimal amount.

Not a myth does not freeze solid ask any butcher, thats why pork is only recomended to be kept only 6 months or so frozen.so your summer burgers are partialy rancid! http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_can_you_freeze_pork_loin http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_can_you_safely_freeze_beef
-
I prefer beef suet over pork as pork fat does not freeze!! This was told to me by an old butcher/farmer who has since passed: pork starts putrifying immediately (this is how the myth of venison only lasting 6 months started. Beef suet freezes solid and can be kept a long time. Mind most people might not need to keep meat that long but put 3-5 deer into ground and you need it to last a long time, especially if your the only one to eat it!! Another friend adds bacon to his ground when he perpares the meal prefering to freeze venison with out anything added. Most Gamey meat i have had in summer can be attributed to adding pork fat to it the previous fall!

Welcome back! Hope you get to find some time to get into those woods you missed!

yep i thought rangers had it .....now it looks like its over...

My only question would be the hunter density in that unit in pa vs hunter density in allegehny county. I think that ar's and doe harvest were the pa's game deptarments only option to try to save their forest regrowth. I do not see a need for them in ny. Most hunters that are looking for trophy deer pass up buck vol. It seems those that want the ar's expect big bucks behind everytree! Mature deer are that mature they've learned to survive and are harder to kill period that is what makes a trophy not antlersize! I hear a lot of complaints about pa's deer herd from friends that hunt there. Seems a lot of nice deer are being taken but on private land. State land is overhunted and the population doesn't seem to be there anymore for the number of hunters hunting it to be sucessfull.
