i hear the dec is proposing an oct 1st start to the 2012 season
G-Man replied to Pat Rockets's topic in Bow Hunting
nothing to be taken from bow hunters, add a 3day youth hunt and a 4 day early muzzloader concurrant the 2nd week is all. Deer numbers are to high in areas and the state wants more doe harvest..i wouldn't be surprised to see an earn a buck tag for archery in areas in the future, especially if you read the full proposal and see the tag restructuring -
Actually 'm glad if they push bow to oct 1, and for the muzzloader season..there is duck and pheasant going on the same time bow is now! plus its during the week so how many will want to fill a doe tag then? i muzzleload and bowhunt and i will take a doe with a bow over muzzloader/gun any day. The fact is the deer numbers are extremly high in areas and people don't shoot enough doe so the state by mandate needs to have way to harvest more so the herd is managed. This might even open up areas closed to hunting if the bow setback is reduced to 150' whick means a lot more hunters can hunt close to home especially with the price of fuel. For those that need/prefer the long walks/stalks on whitetail this probably doesn't even raise your attention.

Small Harvest/ Attraction Plots
G-Man replied to Bballhunter11's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
With that mix i would not plant anything under at least 1/2 acre .. if you want to plant smaller than that go with a good clover alfalfa mix and you can add in turnip or winter pea. the clover and alfalfa will withstand a lot more grazing pressure and continue to draw when the pea/turnip are gone -
there are a few out there that capture video with sound already...
-
Haven't seen rr clover but alfalfa is available... there are sprays available to kill weeds in clover like arrest and post.if spraying is what you want to do....
-
bummer.... it shouldn't be to bad, most meat you buy at wegaman/tops is brought into nys frozen (no slaugherhouses in wny anymore except for a few small ones) and then thawed, cut, sold, then you take it home and refreeze it so its about the same...

Congrats!!

I have seen some of the early fitzgerald videos, passing thru,ect...a little bit to redneck for me,, but very true to life hunting situations.

For those of you who want to watch this great series on netflix http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Bowhunting-October-Whitetails-Parts-1-2/70023597

You said it Doc!!

Burt, Have you ever seen the whitetail visions tape tricking whiteteil bucks.. its great! food plots, tying down wire to make a fence crossing..these guy were doing this stuff 30 years ago!! and now its all new?? lol.. like i said some of the most informative videos i've seen!

I prefer to hunt the trails/ staging area downwind of the standing cornfield... i like the game close , couldnt care less look across a field to see 20 deer feeding out of range.. id rather see one good one at about 15 yrds... field hunting is not for me personally..

I like a lot of the old ones from the 80's early 90's. Whitetail visions (one of the best bowhunting instructional video's i've seen) october whitetails and october whitetails 2, and the Quest series (produced mostly in pa.) neither series are about taking just whitetails but actually teach/instruct about setting stands, scouting, hunting methods, and yes way back then food plots. And in the process you get to see some great hunts/misses and a little comic relief. just seems the new videos are just "watch me kill a big buck" i'll stick with the older ones....

Deer prefer corn on the ground to standing corn. I believe if it is not gathered into a pile or a specfic area its ok(don't quote me on that) I know they can get duck/goose huters in trouble if there is a spilled pile in a field (from loading waggons) In our climate corn is one of the best winter draws for game as long as there is enough to last the winter. Best ask your local dec officer as he would be the one giving you the ticket..

Nice ...just don't start lickin' em :

no complaints with my old original ones( these are 6-8years old now), the one expert i sent back to be reprogrammed. My friends have had some problems with the ir cameras. I think be biggest cause of problems are batteries, i stay with duracell or ray o vac, i get the longest battery life out of them and they seem to have a stronger charge. MY one friends wasn't working so he gave it to me to try..fresh batterys not the store brand he had in it(althoough he insists they were brand new) and it worked fine. He uses the same brands i do now and havn't had a problem since.

sounds like you saw a piebald doe!

the flash will scare at eye level, but i pull my camera from hunting areas about 3 weeks before the season. for two reasons... i like to check my cameras once a week so i dont want to scent up my hunting spot, and second a treestand is pretty visiable and why but a camera in a area that someone else may see? I do leave them up thru the season in destination feed field entrance and staging ares and check them at noon. If a good animal is in the area i still will know about it and can back track the entrance and exit trails to find a spot to set up. I have had a few big bucks that don't mind the camera and others that will not walk back in front after it goes off(but amazingly they still walk thru the area as i can turn the camer 90degrees and get another pic of the same buck avoiding the previous flash area. or put the camera up high and face downward so they think the flash is lightning

These two sets are from original cuddebacks. I also use an cuddieback experts. all are whiteflash cameras. i do have a few wild game innovations ir4 but the trigger time is slow and they work best on a scrape (narrow area, and still animals).

some more from camera 2...
-
some new pics.. lots of game around..except the tom(the camera gave him away for a late morning ambush by my neighbor 2nd last day of season)
-
You'll like the daytime pictures...not a big fan of ir pics.. but you won it so you can't complain. other than the ir image quality you'll be very happy with it.

John's 2011 trail cam pics! - turkey, deer, bear, etc...
G-Man replied to burmjohn's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I think thats why the dec is pushing for bear season to open with gun for deer rather than the week lag that we have now. Of course this is a few seasons to late in my opinion. I have had 4 different bear hanging around my house most of the spring, cleaning out what was left of the food plots mostly but getting into my barn/deck and just being a general nusience. Five years ago you were lucky to see a bear...now they are everywhere!
