virgil, If your trying to roost and do not hear a bird gobble naturaly, it can be done with a varaity of locater calls, owl hooters, coyote howler, i even use an elk bugle. Standing in one spot will not work all the time, especially when foliage is thick late in the season. i like to walk a ridge from sunset till dark stopping and calling every 100 yards or so, I walk down the ridge and back (about a half mile) and have not had a bird answer the call untill i am past it 200 or more yards. if i hear one i'll move to within 150-100 yards and try again, if it doesn't respond ill go past it a few hundered yards and try again. I can usually pinpoint a bird to within 50 yards of where it is doing this all the while i am listening for jakes/and hens and just the sound of a bird flying up. the mature tom tends to put itself between the hens and the jakes. try to set up on the side closer to the hens(the tom wants to go that way anyway and it lets you intercept hens that are heading to the tom) Over the years hunting the same property i now have my toms located to the tree they roost in( i have 4 roost areas and even if there are no gobbles i know the birds are there). Best of luck this season!!

I have a friend who likes to shoot the heaviest arrow he can as he feels it helps with penetration. Deer are small thin skinned game shouldn't be a problem what you choose. Although i like to shoot carbon as i always seem to have my alum arrows bent by a deer running or deflection thru brush hitting a rib, shoulder blade. the carbon just seem to hold up a lot better and i am going into 4 seasons and counting without replacing an arrow (yes i've shot deer just reuse the same arrow),where every year i seemed to be buying a half dozen for hunting with alum.

I've never taken a deer over 35 in the woods well maybe 36, just to much brush.. I have killed a buck at 55 yards in a field.I practiced for several weeks to 60 yards as he kept crossing at 50-55 yards everyday from my stand and i was determined to get him the last weekend. I guess i could of tried to get closer off the ground but the only way to see into the goldenrod was to be elevated and the only spot for a stand was 50 yards away. I would never try a shot like that in the woods and conditions were perfect a nice calm clear frosty morning!

Well thats just it are they talking a rut in a well ballanced herd or just the average ny herd? Seems to me there is always some activity around halloween and again sometime during 1st 2 weeks in nov. Moon, no moon, cloudy or sunny.....

This will be the 1st year I do not have a youth to take out. My friends son is old enough but his grades weren't high enough...don't really know who's being punished worse him or me!

I use to follow the 100 yd rule with mixed success. I like to get 50-75yards or less from a roosted tom, yes this is possible when you know the woods and get in when its dark(no flashlight)and the more leaves on the tree the closer I get. the key is to get setup between the tom and the hens. The tom will land in your lap...no calling involved. Works 90% of the time. I have even busted the hens out on purpose in the dark...the tom knows they were there and will come in just make sure to send the hens in opposite direction of his roost tree! Calling will only bring a bird in that wants to go that way,how many hung up birds have you had to deal with? woodsmanship is much more important!

Looks like an old 14.5mmx114mm russian ptrd anti tank gun upgraded to bolt action.. though this looks like a 50 cal..
-
With gun huting treestands are not permitted with or without parent, i remember seeing violations posted last fall of kids hunting out of stands..illegal under the gun laws..can't say if it will be in this bow proposal as well. I'm still for the bill just follow it..

why isn't there a spring season? and should we start one?
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in Bear Hunting
I think most bad meat i have had bear/deer/other just hasn't been properly cared for. I can't tell you if it hung to long without proper temps or not dressed quickly, or properly. Everthing tastes a little different (not everything tastes like chicken!). I know raccoon it pretty good if all the fat is trimmed off it,but leave a little and its the most rancid tasting thing you'll ever try. I know most spring bears are taken over bait but i don't see where that would preclude a spring season. over the last 5 years bear hunting area has expanded by several counties, obviously they are expanding their range, fall hunting doesn't seem to be keeping them in check. I've live/hunted within a few miles of the original line rt 17 now interstate 86 for over 20 years. When the line was changes 8-10 years ago it was rare to see a bear, now it is common. Obvioulsy the dec is either trying to expand their range or they are not able to controll it as the hunting area seems to increase every year lately! -
like the idea of a backrest!! a little concerned about steep hillsides though...

Question on Clover - legume.
G-Man replied to Fantail's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Your ph is good if that's the average.. same with taking soil samples several from around plot. 1 reading can be off but an average is thw way to go. Id skip the lime based on the average and just plant! -
My first plots and habitat improvement were for ruffed grouse and turkey, deer were secondary. so i would say yes for myself. and i plant plots as a part of a bigger management plan. Although i think a lot of people start as an attracant for deer those that stick to it usually move into a larger management plan wether formal or informal...

why isn't there a spring season? and should we start one?
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in Bear Hunting
I don't now about stable. i think it is increasing rapidly. I use to see a bear one every 3 years or so, now i have at least 3 hanging around after 2 were taken in the fall within a mile of me. I am getting damage, pictures and sightings a plenty... -
Sure I see it after the season everyyear ... two weeks would be better. But even 5 days makes a difference with no pressure. Deer return to old habits fast not all deer but enough to make a big difference.
-
That's why a split season would be better. Two opening days, more pressure greater take that's what dec needs deer take. Not opening weekend 50% of deer take then peterd through another 4 weeks ... A two week season with a week to 10 days off followed by another 2 week season would allow a greater harvest for both opening days,as the deer would return to a more normal pattern with the non hunted time inbetween
-
One less in the 2nd and we would of won.... but 1 - 1 is better than 0-2
-
Too many penalties... should of won...
-
How could you miss the game.... ??? i only caught the 2nd and 3rd by the time i got home from work.. lol Millers second playoff shutout..
-
Bigbuck, your nephew can take 1 bird during the youth weekend, and can get his second bird during the regular may season. Best of luck!!
