Not a secret, all the pics i have are from property i own and/or hunt. Been doing habitat improvement for years and keep adding to the property as more becomes available. I provide almost 60 acres of sanctuary (in various size areas) within my property and when i say sanctuary i mean it does not see a human enter it for any reason,at any time(other than to recover a deer and then only at night, or cutting removing timmber in winter).

I know quite a few local families that hunt to put food on the plate, maybe not a years worth of venison but food none the less, and i would bet there are a lot more than i know. I kind of though the same thing untill i moved out to the middle of nowhere there are a lot of locals that need/depend on venison. It seems to be one of the big city vs locals sticking points...locals shoot.. brown its down/ city guys want the bigger buck and get upset to see a little 6 at the processers. Fact is that deer maybe feeding someone's family. Fortunatly i'm in a position that i don't need wild game to feed my family, but i learned its not right to judge/belittle someone else as you do not normally have the whole story if you will..

I think he wrote what the silent majority don't express.. they hunt for the hunt not a "trophy". Or in simple terms one man's trash"smaller bucks" are another man's treasure or in this case trophy! I just seems the big vocal group are the guys and the company's that are trying to profit or build a career out of big buck hunting. Kind of like the lobbiests in washington pushing their agenda. I am not for antler restrictions as i said in other forums, I'f you bought a licence and are happy with it shoot it! Just don't complain if someone gets something bigger or with more points..its as much your right to shoot whats legal as it is for someone to wait/pass up bucks in hopes of somthing bigger! Don't force your opinion/reasons on others, or try to degrade their choice or accomplishment, everone should have the right to chose their own trophy! After all thats why they call it hunting !!

If the deer have never seen tubers(brassica) or chickory before it might take a season or two to find them being used like you think they would/should be.. i just have had better luck with W.I. imperial clover as a draw and food source. I guess it would be like choosing between ice cream and cake for a deer..the ice cream usually wins..

The only other possibility would be a hawthorn. very small red or yellow fruit about the size of a cherry. the tree is usually thorny, and it has a large single pit or seed.

when asked paper or plastic take paper...trees grow back! plastic although recycleable will probably end up in a landfill and its made from oil!! more oil for gas!!

Thanks for the link erussell. nice synopsis but i would still like to see the article itself guess i need to find one to buy. But i agree that most people usuing the qdm moniker are really trying to do trophy deer management.(i know nyantler feels qdm is not about big bucks but about helping the deer herd)unfortunatly he and i are in the minority. I have use a form of management i like to call total deer management it has allowed my group to take 281 deer off our hunting area since 1993 of which 79 were antlered buck. a side effect of this is we also take at least 1 pope n young class buck a year. Not to bad in my opinion for 10 guys that like to hunt!

In 1998 heard a crunch crunch coming my way didn't sound like a deer, kind of like a man walking but wth an enormus stride. for 5 min i could hear it and then i saw something large and black almost hovering 3 ft off the ground.my heart was racing.... a couple of steps and it would be in the clear..... it was...an Osterch!!! ..... must of escaped from someones farm... made a few calls to neighbors and a man came to round up his lost livestock. I always wonder if i could of got away with shooting it as a turkey?? lol -
Great pics! Looks like some sapsuckerholes in it ....you could do a whole photo spread of stuff that comes to my crabapple tree...lol

Biggest typical buck shot in US in 39 yrs
G-Man replied to erussell's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
The skull cap is what the taxidermist needs to mount the deer, and he probably gave the rack back to the owner untill the cape is tanned doesn't want it on his insurance if it were to be stolen. I think the article says the deer was 8 1/2 if i remember right. was shot on a drive after his son saw it and recruited his father and brother to help...dad got the shot. -
Speaking of apple trees?
G-Man replied to First-light's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I use 2x4 welded steel fence 5' high in a circle 2 ft in diameter keeps the deer off, don't use chichen wire as it is to flexiable and the deer will push it in to eat the branches. in the fall pull the grass off the bottom of the trees so the mice won't girdel them. -
Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
G-Man replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
Although i have never seen a hunter in camo or orange look like a deer to me.. i just don't know about the next guy seeing me so some kind of orange for me during gun seasons. none duriing bow though if i guy cant identify me as a person wih a bow and shoots me with an arrow he beeter hopes it kills me instantly because i can guarentee he won't live to make that mistake again! -
My father only gun hunted and would get a deer pretty much every year a sm buck or doe, but my uncle on my mothers side bowhunted i rember him coming over to borrow our cub tractor to get a buck he shot off the neighboring farm, it was huge! seeing that get done with a bow and the fact he's a taxidermist so it was mounted and seeing it and the other deer he mounted every year made me think about bowhunting. I'm left handed so i never had a bow to shoot though,we never had much had extra money around. untill one day my uncle came over with a lefthand used pse compound and a whitetail visions video on vhs that i must of watched a thousand times(and now own on dvd) It was and still is the most informative bow hunting video i've ever seen!

I personally don't think they let enough be taken.. they have to big management areas and really have no idea of the actuall numbers of deer in an area..
-
i could see a few regional get togethers maybe units 8and 9, 6and 7, ect. with the price of gas i think it would be a limiting factor for a lot of people.

The season is long to allow the number of deer to be taken, but if you split the season you could shorten it and allow the deer to return to more natural patterns. I would run a week of gun (thanksgiving week), close it for 2 weeks and then another week, followed by the late bow/ muzzleloader. Most deer are taken in the 1st 2 days of gun. having 2 openers would allow the numbers to be harvested and increase the numbers of hunters in the woods to move the deer around. As for the pressure before season it has to have an effect. Living on the property i hunt its quiet all year untill 2 weeks before season thenthe 4 wheelers hit the woods, hammering , target shooting, woodsmoke coming out of chimneys, spotting at night. All this has a noticable effect on the local herd as they go into hiding and head to sanctuary areas. That plus the fact land use has changed(posted everywhere) and hunting as come down to stand hunting as property are smaller a lot of people buy 5 or ten acres for a camp and bring 4-10 guys to hunt it. the deer leave and find a nice quite area to stay(i would too!). I do most of my scouting now hang stands in july, and use cameras only in easily accessable areas as to leave my woods as undisturbed as possible. seems to work here at least. Toughtest part is not trying to scout in early oct. and keeping the guys i hunt with out of the woods at that time.
