Howard Hill would disagree with you.

Longbow is much less critical of form than a recurve and thus better for shooting moving/flying targets.

Here are some load prediction with a 59K chamber pressure ceiling. Bullet is Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tip and OAL is SAAMI standard 2.800". It would behoove you to find what OAL puts the ogive just ff the lands and load to that if your magazine will accommodate that length. As usual reduce by 10% and work your way up. I use a compressed load if Alliant RL 17 with great results

Go Fund Me Account For the Wall
wildcat junkie replied to Steve D's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Divide 5,700 by 240 and you'll see just how ludicrous this whole go fund me thing is. That will enlighten someone with just a bit of mental acuity as to how many years it would take to fully found this Trump ego monument at the current rate of fund growth.. -

Lever action 45 colt or 9mm or 45acp carbine for bear ?
wildcat junkie replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
454 Casull is just a 45 Colt in a slightly longer case loaded to higher pressure. When loaded for modern firearms the 45 Colt is a very potent cartridge. -
More likely steel that was hardened and not tempered to remove the brittleness..

19 down and 2,981 to go. .6% of the way there! Keep going at this rate and they'll have the $3 billion in just a little over 6 years! -
Sell the junk glass from the "package" on E-bay. I think I got about $70 for the one on my son's friend's Axis II. Take it off before you shoot the gun and you can legally/morally sell as "new other". Axis II is technically a long action with a short magazine. You might want to opt for the VX3i 3.5-10 x 40 for a better "fit". VX 2 3-9 x 40 is a nice size for the action. There are no extended front bases that I am aware of and you might not be able to get the shorter 2.5-8 back far enough for proper eye relief. . Extension rings might be an option though.

I'm going to have to try that.

I'm going to replace the VX-2 3-9 x 33 Ultralight on my 8X57 with a VX 3i 2.5-8 x 36

.243 is maxed out with a 95 gr bullet that has a BC of .379 in a Nosler Ballistic tip. (100 gr maximum readily available from other manufacturers) 7mm 08 is available with 140 gr bullet with a BC of .485 in a Nosler Ballistic Tip. (120 and 150 gr readily available from Nosler and other manufacturers) There is no comparison in versatility for med/big game use.

Most bullet seating dies bear on the ogive. I set my bullet seating dies by adjusting the bullet seating depth using a dummy/loaded round of the OAL I am seeking. The length if the bullet can vary so measuring the actual OAL of the cartridge is merely verifying that one is "in the ballpark". Polymer tipped bullets are not as bad as bullets with exposed lead tips in that respect. To duplicate the OAL if the factory loads, back the bullet seating length off far enough so as to not contact the bullet as you bring the press all the way down on the factory cartridge. Adjust the seating plug down with your fingers until it contacts the bullet and tighten the lock nut.

Whether or not a compressed load is "high end" as far as chamber pressure depends on the powder. In fact, using a powder that will not exceed the desired pressure at a compressed state is a built in safety factor. Why has nobody addressed the extreme danger of loads that do nit fill the case sufficiently? While not a common occurrence with CF rifle loading, ut can easily happen with pistol loads. http://www.reloadammo.com/liteload.htm

"Compressed loads" are your friend. I use "Quickload" to find powders that achieve their maximum Mv at up to 105% load density at a given chamber pressure ceiling. Right now I am using either Alliant Rl 17 or Norma MRP in everything from 30/40 Krag to 8mm-06 Ackley Improved. All of my loads are ether very near 100% load density or slightly above. I find that once full load density is achieved, 100% usable case capacity or more, standard deviation decreases along with group size. This is something only the use of a good chronograph can tell you. Having the cases completely filled with powder, or slightly compressed, does wonders for consistency. Norma MRP will often outperform other powders as far as Mv with significantly less chamber pressure. Many times one can not get enough MRP into the case, even when employing drop tubes during case filling, to get anywhere near dangerous pressure levels. This has proven true with 280 Remington with 140 gr bullets and the 8mm-06 A.I with 200 gr bullets. In either situation, chamber pressure remains well below 60,000 psi. This is one reason big magnum cases seldom achieve results at the same efficiency as cases in the .308-30-06-WSM capacity range unless the bore is .338" or more. 7mm or 8mm bores seem to be the sweet spot in these cases.
