Switched to a carter simple-1 three finger this year and ill never go back. I don't care what anyone says, you will shoot tighter, more consistent groups without a doubt. There's a reason target archers shoot thumb releases, they provide a more solid anchor point and make it easier to pull through your shot which makes for greater accuracy. Not to mention hanging it on your d-loop while in the stand completely frees up both hands instead of having a release hanging off of one of them. I made the switch because I was suffering from really bad target panic with my wrist strap release and my carter has completely cured me of it.

I can't get over how many of these guys and girls on these hunting shows are bowhunting with nothing covering their faces or hands. Anybody that has spent any amount of time in the woods knows that eye contact alone usually means game over if your caught up in a stare down. I would have to imagine adding a bare human face to the mix is just adding salt to the wound. I'm watching Tammy Gregory get picked off by every dang deer that comes within 50 yards of her and I see it plenty on other shows as well.

Thanks papist!

Although I see where your coming from Phade and I know you're a play it safe and hunt smart guy like myself, I'll only not hunt a stand based on bad wind, I'm not going to not hunt a stand based on something like a silent frosty morning, if anything this is a stand I definitely want to be in on a morning like that. I'm going to give the rake method a try and see how it turns out. Sometimes I play it too safe and I think it costs me opportunities.

Good stuff everyone, thanks for the help

One of my favorite bow stands is on a bench transition line where the hardwoods meet a 5 year old clear cut. It's thick with briars and natural brows and is a favorite destination for bucks to grab one last bite to eat as they return from the Ag fields headed back to bed. The walk in, in the morning is louder than all get out though from leaf litter and I often bust deer out as I make my way to my stand. I know the ideal time to rake the path would be after the majority of the leaves have fallen but that's to much disturbance during the season. When do you guys that do this often take on the task? Can I do it now to get the bulk of the leaf litter from the previous season out of the way?

Every 3-4 weeks. Like T-Bone says, I have never heard of over-waxing a bow string, but you can certainly not wax it enough.
-
I shoot 50 yds at the most just to help make closer shots a little bit easier

Good to know. I too have sprayed my bow down many times over the years. Won't be doing that anymore.

laughed out loud the entire time i read your story. Great stuff and great bird!!

Good stuff Wolly! Congrats!

I'm not a fan of either. They both stink.

Jeeze Louise Larry you hooted!?! I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to turn you into the authorities for such an appallingly unlawful act haha. Congrats on a fine hunt and bird!
-
Good deal man! Judging by the first pic of you and the bird you're hunting some good looking country!
-
It's very hit or miss IMO. I'd say it works 25% of the time.

Thanks everyone!

After a missed opportunity on a bird that came in hot off the roost early in the morn (came in to my hard right and being that I'm a right handed shooter I couldn't swing on him before he got nervous and headed back into the timber) I headed to a diff farm to do some walking and calling along the ridges. Seen this Tom strutting in a patch of thick stuff and after repositioning myself several different times and getting the delta hen out, I called him right to the end of the barrel. Had a blast calling him through the timber and listening to his gobbles echo that sweet spring song!

Beautiful Tom!

It's just turkey hunting my man. Some days you could call them in rubbing two rocks together and other days you could have a real hen right in front of you doing the best she can to entice a Tom and he could give a shit about her, all while gobbling his head off. Have fun and enjoy the head scratching and frustrating hunts because they make the text book ones a blast!

Good story, good bird man.
