  1. My uncle swears by winter wheat . He did a bunch of buckwheat one year and they ate it until is frosted turned brown . They would run through the buckwheat to get to the winter wheat . By the time hunting season was on buckwheat was done . Then it was all about winter wheat. Now all he plants is winter wheat clover .
  2. 5 years ago I belonged to a large lease we planted alot of turnips 8 acres . The stuff grew great. Softball size and bigger . The guys that hunted those plots shot deer chasing does but not a one feeding . It was January before I found evidence of deer feeding on the turnips . And it was very sparse. Come spring it was a slimy stinky mess . It was turned under and planted into clover rape and radishes . The deer were in those plots all the time . I dont think the deer had a clue they should eat the turnips. We planted strips of turnips for 2 more years and still no sign the deer were eating it . My reason for choosing radishes is the deer will eat the tops ... the roots will break up and amend the soil .
  3. Getting a hard rain here in chemung county at the moment after 2 rounds of showers this afternoon . My yard needs it. It's too dry.
  4. I cant win this year . Replanted 18 pepper 8 cucumber... 6 tomatoes 3zucchini 3 summer squash after the frost. June 13 it frosted. Planted sunday. 2 squash plants dead all others infested with cucumber beetles . Sprayed tonight ... hope I can save them .
  5. Is that a new covid symptom ?
  6. Lets not forget cleaning the seed pods .... lots of fun . My grandparents lived on a road catalpa drive in Horseheads . Freaking things are pretty but they do make a hell of a mess.
  7. Not sure when to plant . Radishes are suppose to go in in july but the rye can go in later . Then add clover to the mix . I'm really not sure when to plant what . Or should I plant them all at once. Any info would be helpful.
  8. From what I have been reading cereal rye will germinate in colder weather and is much more tolerant to low ph . Let it grow through the spring go to just before seed mow it down . Breaks down for soil feeds the clover.
  9. Still have a little clearing to do but I'm planning on planting a fall plot of about an half an acre and two more smaller plots of 1/4 each. Rocky and thin on soil . I have been studying the subject and have settled on a 3 year plan of cereal rye and clover. Suppose to build soil and give somthing for the deer to eat. Have also thought about adding radishes to help break up the soil . I have tried smaller plots but the deer wipe it out when its 3 inches tall . I have access to a brush hog sprayer, and disk. Next year I hope to have a rototiller. I'm picking up lime and fertilizer next week. What do you guys think .
  10. Welcome aboard... congrats on the property. Dont know about the hunting bit there is some fine fishing near Margaretville
  11. You should have met my mentor. The man is a fishing machine . He would go through an run like a gill net in a bathtub. No fish was safe . His fly tying was second to none .. Your no slouch either .. Pygmy casts a sexy loop...

  19. Looks like squash ... cucumbers are a loss ... hope peppers can make it back . Tomatoes too.
  20. One has to take the time . I spent the time to watch the state of the union last year. I watched the whole thing . Then my wife and I enjoyed flipping the channels and watching different coverage from CNN Fox msnbc. They all cherry pick stories ... cut soundbites out of context ... cnn and msnbc out and out right lied . They reported opinions as facts . The spin doctors really put on a show . There is no journalistic integrity. No facts are reported just opinions half truths and out right lies. Just the facts man ... just the facts. Who what where when and how ... keep your opinions to yourself . They pander to the lame brain twits that cant have a conscious thought of there own . They tell inflammatory stories to push their social agendas... hell some of the lies are so bad they cant even tell a story without smirking ... Look at dumbass chuck todd he got caught in disinformation last week and when called on the carpet he passed the buck .. with a half assed walk back . There is no news ... it's all opinion!
