burmjohn
It sounds IMO that what some are saying is the youth days are so the Adult doesn't have to be inconvenienced during "Their" season... I started hunting when I was 16 and it was a blast being at camp with everyone its what I look forward to every year. But if it means that more kids are going to get in the woods who freaking cares what the motives are. I just want to see more youth out there so our sport lives on and grows. adirondackbushwhack
When I was a boy I started out going deer hunting with my father and uncles at around 5 or 6 years old. They would sit and I would track deer all day. They were kind of a bunch of ridge runners and by the the time I was 8 or 9 I was seeing more deer than them so they gave me a gun to get meat. They were a "if its brown its down" crew and I fell in with them for a while but later I changed my thinking to being a buck hunter although I will on occassion fill a doe tag for meat. Later when I was teaching my own son to hunt I taught him my way and took him out on scouting trips and along on hunts before he could carry his own bow or rifle (I made him wait till a legal age). I taught him all I knew about reading sign, tracking, stalking, moving unnoticed through the woods and finding deer. When he could finaly shoot his own deer I took him with me and put him on deer and found as much fun in sneaking up on deer with him as I did with doing it myself even though the shot was his. I don't think I would have liked a special youth hunt when I was a kid and my son wouldn't have either because I would have felt that it was not on equal ground with the grown ups. I took pride in the fact that I was a better hunter than the rest of the crew when I was a boy and if there was special youth hunts it would have been cheating and would have robbed me of my pride at being the best. Plus later it was more fun taking my son out in the season rather than at some special youth hunt time. He was part of the hunt during the season. WNYBuckHunter
I dont see how it would be anymore dangerous, its not like the kids would be out by themselves, there would have had to have been an adult right there with them. Also, as far as how it was when many of us were kids, times have changed, and kids these days have alot more distractions. The recruitment and license sales numbers dont lie, hunter numbers are falling off a cliff. If something isnt done, we are no longer going to have enough of a voice to keep our sport going. I feel the need to not be shortsighted on the subject of the future of our sport. I do not feel that the youth season would be a cure all, but I dont see it as hurting either. I believe it would be a good piece of the puzzle to add in, as other states have done, successfully. I also do not see a youth weekend as any kind of dumbing down. Its just an opportunity to get out there during a time of the year that typically has a bit better weather, and slightly more patternable deer. Its no guarantee that they will kill or even see anything. I see the exclusion of the youth weekend as another set back. Just my 2 cents.

bubba
Im confused. A bow is a legal implement to use in any season. Oh boy Bubba I stand corrected. Am I the only one who thought this? Here is a section of DEC website. Muzzleloading Deer Map Bear - may only be taken as shown on the Bear Hunting Map. All hunters participating in the muzzleloading season must follow these requirements in addition to the other regulations in this guide. Each resident hunter must have purchased a current year Muzzleloading privilege with his/her big game license. Each nonresident hunter must have a current year Muzzleloading License. The legal firearm for this season is a muzzleloading rifle or pistol (including smoothbore muzzleloaders) loaded through the muzzle, shooting a single projectile and having a bore of .44 inches or larger. Double-barreled muzzleloaders and percussion cap revolvers are not legal during the special muzzleloading season. If you hunt with a single-shot muzzleloading pistol, you must have a New York State Pistol License. Hunters shall not have in their possession, or be accompanied by a person who has in his or her possession, a bow or firearm other than the legal muzzleloading firearm. You may use fiber-optic sights or scopes on a muzzleloading firearm at any time. with the new dates, it is as it always has been. Early archery season is still going on the same week of muzzleloading. As was op, it showed archery stopping on a friday, and ml starting the next day. But as stated both archery and ml season run the same week, so you can hunt with a bow. If one would have stopped and the other started, you couldn't. That was my point from the original post. Totally understood your point, but my point was I thought bow was a legal implement to use during any season speciall or not. Hence the reason for the reply. But like I said in the last post I stand corrected about what I thought was actually wrong. Sure glad I looked anyhow and now know it is illegal during muzzlelader season only. Amazes me how DEC expects everyone to be up to date on all the darn laws to begin with. Crazy there are so darn many of them and with constant chages I can see how easily it is to get confused these days.
