How many of us belong to hunting camps or hunting clubs? In the event that one of your fellow hunters deliberately broke the law what would you do. Report him, admonish him or expel him. I know many clubs and camps have rules and regulations which all agree to follow, however what if someone knowingly broke the law.

"Unsportsmanlike Conduct" reported to the Board of Directors, and verified, results in immediate dismissal from the club.  If game laws have been violated, a report is sent to the D.E.C. for their action.

We do not tolerate this type of behavior.

Several years back, I belonged to a hunting camp in Schoharie County and a fellow hunter intentionally shot a bear (at that time time bear hunting was prohibited). He falsely reported the bear kill to the DEC as being killed in a DMU where bear hunting was legal, even stooping so low as to have a priest (you figure) vouch for him. In any event, a longstanding member of the camp and a lifelong friend of his turned him in to the DEC. Thankfully, I was not at the camp that weekend for I would have done the same. In any event the hunter who turned him in was ostracized and left the camp for good. I followed soon after and have never returned. To this day I am always ask to rejoin the camp, but always politely decline.

The DEC fined the guy 1k, confiscated the bear and revoked his hunting privileges for 5 years.

I hope I never run into a situation like that.I hunt with very close friends.

So do I.  In fact my best friends are my hunting buddies.  But it is our sport we are protecting. And as I have stated before per the DEC hunting acidents happen whan someone is breaking the law. So it may be your life you save in the process

  I went on you tube and watched some of those poaching videos. Some of these guys don't even stop shooting when the warden pulls up and is walking towards them.  How safe is that they shoudl confiscate everything everytime no questions asked.  People would stop if they new they were going to loose important things.  They get away with it that is way they do it.

I know that enforcement in some areas with very depressed folks is less than enthusiastic...and I agree with it. I would never balk at a down and out guy putting food on the table. I know CO's that won't bust their chops if done discretly and safely. But all others...they need to screw them into the wall and prosecute to the fullest...I get sick finding a buck with the skull cap cut off and the animal left to rot

They need to get tougher on enforcement...I know with budget cuts they are down on the CO's in th field....but I'd be all for the increase of fines and 100% of it going to enfoecement budget...not sure how much goes there now from the fines.....but probably in true NY fashion....most if not all probably hits the general fund

I would turn the guy in. I think we are all thinking of major violations, not some minor ooppsie like forgetting to report or filling out a tag wrong correct?

This seems to be an issue of growing importance to hunters. We need to separate ourselves from the loosers out there. It sounds like we are policing our own pretty well but could use some more funds to step up the process.

Last year we called the DEC on some guys that were baiting in one of our spots, the ECO came out, hiked up the mountain to see for himself and came back around the opener of gun and nailed the whole camp. Hopefully those guys stay away but I doubt it will deter them for long.

Is Unlawful killing or taking of big game a major violation?

Unfortunately I don't think it really is, sure there are fines and hell to pay but I don't think there is any jail time or any thing like that. The worst they will do is fine, recind your license and sease property..ie guns and trucks. I ain't no expert on it though.

To me that is a major violation and in PA it is only a summary offense which includes a fine and a period of imprisonment for 90 days. (I have the PA crimes code book in front of me). I understand that to us hunters it is a big deal killing game out of season or illegally. We thingk that they should do more time but the laws governing hunting are weak and most time the offender gets off by paying a fine and lossing their hunting license.

Are game law violations in NY a summary offense? I am from PA and almost 90% of game law violations are summary offenses.
