steve863
Very good. We need MORE intelligent people like this guy. He did say, though, that he is for background checks for everyone, which I assume means for ALL gun sales. This is something that I have NOT heard the NRA agree to. So he doesn't seem to be in complete lock-step with the NRA here. Quite frankly, that is a good thing in my opinion. My hats off to this guy for not being the typical mouthpiece on the subject.
shawnhu
I'd join the NRA if this guy was running the show, maybe.
steve863
I'd join the NRA if this guy was running the show, maybe. OK, so that makes two of us, and brings me to an interesting question. The NRA is claiming that it's had several hundred thousand people sign up in the last few weeks. I wonder how many MORE would sign up if they toned down their tactics and gave the appearance that they were capable of a civil discussion? My guess would be several million at least. shawnhu
Maybe. I don't doubt that the NRA is the most powerful 2nd amendment group, but that doesn't mean they don't have to listen to their current and future members input either. steve863
With 15 to 20 million licensed hunters in this country, and more than 60 million gun owners, I would almost guarantee that their membership would grow to at least 7 to 8 million. Of course, they want to remain hardline and can only muster 4 million or so out of all these hunters and gun owners. Not a very good percentage in my opinion, so they are obviously not doing something right.

ATbuckhunter
This guy really knows what he is talking about. I just wish people would understand that its no going to do anything about illegal guns. If by any chance Ars becomes less accessible and illegal to buy, statistics prove that being told not to do or buy something makes people want to do it or buy it more. It will have adverse affects if they ban these weapons.

I think the way that Cuomo and the anti gun faction in this state rammed the new legislation through shows exactly who it is thats not willing to have any kind of a rational discussion, or any discussion for that matter. They want their agenda pushed and will do whatever it takes to do so.

steve863
LOL .... A soothsayer now. And he even comes with real numbers too. No more of a soothsayer than you, Doc, who thinks that all those who choose not to join the NRA don't because they have a "let someone else do it" attitude. Whichever way you slice it the NRA has a small portion of gun owners enrolled, and the reasons they don't join are not as simplistic as you think. nyantler
Go back to some of the NRA threads on this site and look at all the reasons guys have for not joining the NRA... you'll be the only one on those threads talking about the NRA's "hardline"... all the rest are worried about phone calls and if their magazine subscription got messed up... then are the first to bitch about the NRA not taking a stronger stand on some gun issue... Nomad
We never had those numbers before the take over by the hardliners , both the '94 and earlier ones .You know back when we were mostly a shooting and gun safety group and everyone held hands and sung songs and fought for 2a rights here and there. . Nomad
Turns out the first big shift was in 1,977 from hunting and conservation to more hard line 2A. The same type of hunters and gun owners sat out back then as today, only in much bigger numbers, despite far more hunters then, the NRA membership was little over 1 million . MountainHunter
A very bright and articulate young man! The tyranny argument is a tough sell and not one that I personally can even comprehend. Given that interpretation of the 2nd Amendment we should have the ability to posess any weapon that the government has. We cannot appear credible if we are trying to advance that position.
