The info below was taken from a site called The Somers Daily Voice (as in Somers, NY).

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – The Somers cyclist who was hit by a deer dashing across a road in North Salem last week has died of his injuries.

Walter Hutchins was the past president of the Somers Chamber of Commerce and the current president of the North Salem Chamber of Commerce.

Hutchins was riding along Delancey Road in North Salem on Thursday, May 9, when a deer dashed across the road and crashed into him, according to New York State Police. He was seriously injured and taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said. He died of his injuries Friday.

In addition to the New York State Police, responders included the North Salem Police Department, the Croton Falls Fire Department, the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Westchester EMS Paramedics.

While this is a bit freakish, folks clearly underestimate the danger deer pose!

If deer can run into cars (and we know that they do), why is it surprising that deer can run into a motorcycle. I know a guy that stopped riding his bike at night because of the number of times he hit or nearly hit deer.

I too knew a guy who was hit by a deer while riding his motorcycle up on a mountain road. The deer slammed into his foot pedals , nearly knocking him off his bike . I remember him showing me all the deer hair stuck in the engine/frame. He said it scared the s--t out of him.

Interesting, my take was that he was on a bicyle not a motorcycle.  I'll let you know if I learn more.

Actually that would make more sense. Deer/motorcycle collisions really aren't big news. A bicycle/deer collision resulting in a fatality would really be some a unique news story.

It happened about 2 miles from my house.  It was guy riding a bicycle.  Tons of deer in that part of North Salem, Also tons of bicycle riders (also horses) on the roads.  I can’t stand them when they are riding 20 to 50 in a pack (fox hunters w/ dogs and horses are worse), but it’s terrible that the guy died.  Maybe some of the folks with 4+ areas of land will open it up to bow hunters, but I doubt it.  RIP

So, I am trying to picture how this became a fatality. Was the injury caused by some part of the deer wacking him in a lethal part of his body or was it the contact with the pavement after the collision? Was the guy wearing a helmet? Yeah, it's got to hurt to be clobbered with a deer running full-tilt, but it's hard to imagine that would be fatal. Normally deer collisions become super violent because of the speed of the vehicle. But a bicycle ??? I've got a feeling there may have been some secondary contact that actually caused the death that they collide with. Whatever the details are that were left out of this story, it really does sound like a "freak" accident.

RIght Cyclist is a bicycle rider.  I had an extremely close call on my motorcycle 2 years ago near my house in PA.  A doe came right out in front of me as I rounded a twisty curve.  I managed to keep the bike upright and get back in my lane before hitting a guard rail or an oncoming car.  I could have slapped the deer on the rump as I skidded past.  I don't take that road on the bike anymore and am always more cautious during late afternoons.
