when does the corn get cut?

im huntinging a corn field last year it was soy just wondder when it should be cut so i can do some glassing

Depends if going for silage or grain. Silage should be starting soon, grain might not happen till Nov or later, depending on moisture content, drying and storage space. Let alone field condition.

its very hard corn thats all i know and has a kind of reddish color

Passed a field of corn being chopped this morn.... dry corn isnt gonna be combined till approx middle of oct (thats when were doing ours)

does the corn being cut affect the deer movement/activitiy ?

No corn chopping here yet ...but it's pretty dry and hanging ...the beans are being chopped big time...pasted several big trucks headed for the bunkers on the way home today and several down to dirt fields...also looks like they planted grains today...

yes cutting will effect movement, a lot has to do with how cleen the harvest is. chopping takes everything just leaves stubble. combining grain corn can leave some grain along with all the trash(stalks) . think if a deer lived in a 20 acre woods and the next day its completely clear cut and everything removed. a lot of deer will live/bed/feed in a standing cornfield. when its cut they will move to find cover.

They just started chopping this week here. Some fields are still too green to be harvested. Usually the deer will continue feeding on the field for 1-2 weeks after along with the geese.

There are several fields around Canandaigua that are being cut right now (silage).

does that mean its not a prominante food source to hunting during rifle?

If its standing, its great to hunt during gun season. The problem youll run into is that the deer hide out in there, and you basically have to still hunt the field on a windy day, or drive them out of it, which is a challenge in itself. We drive corn fields later in the season, and the standers are in tree stands at the end/sides of the field. You can literally watch deer get bumped by the drivers, and they move ahead, then 8 or 10 rows over and double back, basically circling the drivers. Big corn fields can be a real pain in the butt.

 

Fields that were chopped for silage are of no use during the season. If the field was cut for grain, particularly by old equipment, it can still be a draw in the later season, but most of those big open fields only get used at night, at least around my area.

We sometimes kick in some money to our neighbor farmer to leave some standing corn for us, just to maybe keep deer interested in our area.
