Big buck ---- only spikes

Saw a big buck this morning . From the size I would guess he was at least a 2 1/2 year old but ....... he only had spikes . He was a big boy !

Would this be due to genetics ? There are some deer with big racks in the area so it's not nutrition .

its hard to say, even tho there are good food sources in your area with nutrition you never do know what that paticular deer has been feeding on. i would think that just because a deer has access to good nutrition doesnt really mean that he would eat it. you also dont know if it really is the oposite in which the deer has been eating good enough to put weight on but does have crappy gentics. im sure anything is possible.

how big were his spikes??

A 2.5 with spikes will never be a AR legal deer - part of the reason for my signature.

Few years back I shot a buck with "spikes". They had a 12 inch spread and the beams curled around like mean beams just no tines !!

He dressed out at 130 #.

Neat deer.

Bucks are moving alot so he could have come from another area. They move from area to area if there is a dominate buck around they will push the smaller buck to the point that will leave the area for another.

Or it could be a really healthy 1 and a half year old that ate really well this year.

He was moving too fast through the woods for my Bino-Cam and the pic was blurry so I couldn't get a photo .

Ive seen spikes that were 15 to 16 inch before in Alabama. Deer was aged at 1 1/2  at a check station. Some deer just have better genetics and are bigger spikes than others not the other way around sometimes

My buddy shot a 3.5 yearold spike last year, a mature deer but wouldn't be legal some places with AR's.

If his nads where hurt, could of caused his antlers to spike. Maybe.
