PUTNAM — Authorities said a bobcat that pounced onto a 49-year-old woman at the door to her Washington County home tested positive for rabies.

Cindy Bowman told The Post-Star of Glens Falls (http://www.poststar.com ) that the attack occurred last Thursday as she was letting her dog into her home in the town of Putnam, located between the northern end of Lake George and the Vermont border.

Bowman said the bobcat latched onto her face and bit or scratched her head, shoulder, arms and thigh. The bobcat then went after her daughter's boyfriend, Nate Nadeau, who shot and killed the animal.

The bobcat later tested positive for rabies. Bowman and Nadeau are undergoing a series of shots for the disease.

State environmental conservation officials said bobcat attacks on humans are extremely rare.

I once heard that the antidote for rabies was a series of shots in the stomach over a couple of weeks. Anyone have any first hand knowledge of the process? Frankly that sounds pretty gross if that is true. Of course it's better than the alternatives.

3 shots to the arm now  I believe...but sometimes there are bad reactions...and that is very bad...neighbor friend had such a problem..... after a rabid bat got into their bedroom and bit her....had it not woken her husband and he killed it...she would not have known she'd been bitten...of course until it was too late....

never mind I found it.....

Dose ScheduleTop

Pre-exposure rabies vaccines are administered by a series of three injections:

  • The first dose may be given at any time
  • The second dose should be given seven days later
  • The third dose should be given 21 or 28 days after the first dose
  • Booster doses of vaccine are recommended every two years for those individuals who continue to be at increased risk of contracting rabies to maintain protective antibody levels. People that work with live rabies virus in laboratory settings should be tested every six months to ensure that they have adequate antibody levels, and receive boosters as necessary.

Good luck and a quick recovery, Growie.

A friend of mine had to get the rabies series last year. He saw a kitten with a can stuck on it's head.. Mr Good Deeds decided to rescue the poor unfortunate critter..

He pulled the can off the cat's head and it bit the HELL out of his hand and ran off.

The kitty couldn't be located to be checked for rabies, so my friend John had to get the rabies shots.

Of course his buddies, me included ,didn't HARRASS him about it....Hehehehehe.

I'm glad  he told me the crutches were purely safety and not weight bearing...What a PIA they have been...though when I go down to get the mail tomorrow,,,first time out...I will have at least one crutch...that is...if Mr B plows... Monday is my follow up...I can't wait to get the green light for the elliptical again...it's been collecting dust way too long
