Why Do I Need a License to take my grand kids hunting

It all boils down to the act of hunting as defined and his age.  Maybe the laws are not perfect, but it is what we have.

I think we can all agree that there are laws on the books, Some very recent ones come to mind, that are far from perfect and action to change them can come from conversations such as these. We have seen numerous topics about hunter recruitment on here and what can be done. I would think this one item could fit into a plan nicely with almost no cost impact to implement.

I really didn't see where this could be so difficult to implement other then adding or changing some verbiage to the rule book.

I goto walmart and say I want to buy a license. If I am buying a big game license they ask me if I want to also want to get a doe tag. I can easily opt out of a doe tag. How hard could it be to opt out of a buck tag. Thus, just having a license to mentor. Yes, I guess this still allows me to drive deer.... But, I do not have the tag too take deer.

In the hypothetical situation, he'd still be buying the license so it would allow an "assist." It just wouldn't allow him to take a deer because he doesn't have a tag.

Same situation as if you already filled your tag. You can still accompany and assist other hunter.

At least, that's what the DEC states:

Q: Can I participate in someone else's hunt after I have filled all of my deer tags?
A: Yes. A licensed hunter who has filled his or her tags may continue to participate in the hunt, including driving of deer, but may not attempt to shoot a deer.

My understanding for fishing is, if the person fishing is too young to possess a fishing license, they need to be accompanied by a licensed adult.

Another away to picture having a licensed adult mentoring a junior hunter is the junior driver licenses.  They first are required to be accompanied by a licensed adult for safety reasons and be able to take over if the need arises.

This sound's silly unless law's for fishing has changed, when I was a Child/teenager not old enough to need a license I did alot of fishing alone.I am guessing I was a law breaker? With that said I can go to nearby state's and purchase a fishing license for a couple days but here at home have to purchase a yearly license crazy.I know to much red tape but why would one that live's in our great state who does have valid requirment's not be able to purchase say a weekend license instead of the whole season

For fishing, you can purchase a one-day or seven day instead of an annual license.

If you put the pole in the water, reel it in, or a seen putting lure or bait on the line for a child or take the fish off for them, you are considered to be fishing and maybe ticketed by an ECO/Game Warden.

One of the places we camp, we also take the kids canoeing and fishing with some friends of ours.  The rangers sometimes spot check people fishing for licenses.

I usually end up helping the kids bait and fix their lines when they mess up casting. We have up to 5 kids fishing between the two families, and 4 usually do something that requires our help(mostly the girls, either due to their age, or squeamish about touching the worms or fish).  We try to keep 2 licensed adults with the kids, usually me and a friend's wife.

We have a fishing contest here in our public park that has a good size pond. This contest is for the 12 an under age and every child gets something. First place, second place, biggest, smallest, so many ways too win. The youngsters have a ball.... But, we mentors were encouraged to help them bait the hook and show them how too cast the pole. Show them how to tie a hook, and everything in between all the way to measuring the trophy fish. Yep, I admit.... I did it an was not conforming to the laws written.... I did not have a fishing license..... But, in the eyes of the rule book I was fishing..... Um...

So, I'm sorry this thread ended up talking about fishing instead of hunting.... But does it really matter if I'm just there as a mentor? I don't need too buy a licence too teach my grand kids the importance of a condom...... Omg, sorry now this thread is going to be about sex.........

You don't need a license to be a non-participating observer but you'll need a license if you assist in anyway (used a call, help drive, etc). Of course there is no way the officer would know you've assisted. Just don't say "no, officer, I was hunting. I was just trying to drive the deer to my grandson."

If he is accompanying a junior hunter, which I think that he is, he does need a license no matter what.

Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are lands that are supposed to be managed for wildlife; wildlife study; and wildlife-related recreation. Wildlife-related recreation is hunting, trapping, and bird watching. WMAs have different rules & more restrictions than other "state lands". Many states include the language "public hunting area" and/or "open to licensed hunters & trappers". Which sinage do you think is more informative? I like the green signs and detest the yellow ones. I want the DEC to use the green signs. What are your opinions?
