Back when I worked for the DEC a few years ago we had a Giant Hogwood crew that was funded through grant money. This was a group of only 4 guys out of the Cortland office in Region 7. Last I knew they were down to two guys... Hopefully they have more crews by now, this stuff is nasty.

Note: It has a main tap root like Queen Ann Lace. Kill the main tap root kills the plant.

I'm not sure about your other questions.

I think the big problem with simply killing the root is that the heads will still disperse the next generation of seed contributing to the spread if not disposed of properly.

From what I've read up on this stuff, they're trying to make sure ALL precautions are taken to eradicate the infested areas without unknowingly contributing to the spread by mowing it down or whatever other redneck methods of destruction we're famous for coming up with. We could potentially do more harm than good taking on a task like that without a complete understanding of every aspect of what's involved in containing this stuff.

I'll have to take a quick hike this morning to snap some better pics of the hogweed plantation that's taking root here.

Grabbed a few pics this morning from the creekbottom  hogweed plantation.

It's definitely spread much further downstream than I've ever found it before.

Most of the larger plants have already snapped over and the white flower tops have gone to seed.

Here's one I found still standing.

One of the bigger leafs out there right now.

Found some sap oozing out of one of the bigger stalks.

A section of the flower that has gone to seed.

...and a bunch of young plants spreading into the timber from the open sunny patch it got it's start in.

If you have the Giant Hogweed you can email the DEC at [email protected] . I have reported a few patches over the years. They come back every year and spray and pull them. If you have any of theses or know where there are any I would report them. The look pretty but if you don't know what they are and mess with them and get the sap on you you can get very nasty burns and scar's.

This stuff gives you similar burn to skin when contact with sap/juice gets on you. I see it along Rte 77 and 20A , and alot of it

There was a news report, just this morning, saying that the stuff is on the rise in my area and to report id to the DEC. I've never seen it though….at least not that I know of. Damn nasty stuff. They should rename it "Ex wife weed"
