Grunt WEEZE

hey guys I was bow hunting last year when I jumped a group of deer and the dominant mature buck wheezed like hell at me!  I tried a grunt call which stopped him for a second.  He wheezed back and then chased the does back up the mountain.  My question is should I have responded with a wheeze or a grunt/doe bleet?  I had some thick brush between me and the deer so I didn't take the shot because I didn't want to take a chance of wounding this animal.  It was truly an amazing experience to hear a wheeze that close!  Very cool and startling sound to hear when your out in the woods.  So what would you have done to try and stop that buck!?

Sounds to me like the deer busted you, and wanted to get out of there quickly. Not a whole lot you can do if they're in escape mode, grunting or bleeting at them probably won't hurt, but it probably won't bring them back either. A year is a long time, who knows, you might see that deer again. Good luck!

in that situation, chances are next to nothing that you ccould have stopped him with a call, drew and shot.also that deer would likely be "on alert", may jump string with a bow shot. I've heard that when deer blow at you but don't see you, you can blow back at them and possibly get them to come your way for a shot. Peter Fidducia mentions it in one of his videos. I've yet to try it. Anyway,I Would rather have the rifle in that situation.

yea I hear ya it was early bow season so the brush was thick as hell and I knew I could  make out the deer but I didn't have an ETHICAL shot!  Next time I will have to just move slower take my time and pay attention more.  I have passed up more deer then I will ever shoot and that's fine by me.  If it were easy it wouldn't be cool.

That doesn't sound like he wheezed but actually blew meaning alarm. It's a short burst of air that's loud. If that's the case you're done. He knows you're there. I've made the sound back, circled downwind, walking slowly, and stomping with each step. Sometimes they come a little closer and hang around for another second. If you don't have a shot to begin with it doesn't do much good. It's better than nothing though. If they do something you do same. They almost get confused for a second because you're acting like they scared you. Works much better with a gun early on. It's tough with a bow as they're firing on all cylinders right then and can easily turn and burn as you release an arrow. If the buck was snort wheezing then snort wheeze back following by a aggressive drawn out grunt. But stop at an point if he acts like he heard you. If he's looking your way and then moves on like he's not really spooked then bleat at him once he starts walking.

Deer hear no better than us. However, their ears can pivot and do so independently which makes them designed to pin point location of sound way better than we can. Don't call to a deer that's already heading your way. Otherwise only call to a deer until it hears you. If it hears you and moves on it may come back to heck you out later. If you continue making noise at it though they'll figure out you're not a deer and not come back.

Sounds to me like the deer blew or "snorted" at you.

Most of the time it's a doe that does that, rather than a buck.

When there is reason for alarm, any mature buck is going to separate himself from the does..That's how he has stayed alive long enough to become "mature"..

You can wheeze, grunt, snort or fart all you want, but if you have been snorted at your chances of getting a good shot are close to ZERO, especially if you are dealing with an adult buck.

It was a "I am half deaf" joke so I know they hear better than me. Lol

well in your defense they can hear sounds with a frequency of 30,000+ hertz opposed to an average person peaking at 20,000 hertz.  the sound has to be very loud though as that high a frequency won't travel very far at all in the deer woods.  another thing is we usually wait until we hear a sound but a deer is always moving those big satellite ears to pick up sound.  in general we do hear the same... as long as the person has a hearing aid if needed of course. lol

Have you ever used a decoy to hunt whitetails? If you haven't before you might want to start! I woke up one morning and look out my front window only  to find that my 3D deer target was in pieces all over the front lawn! A fired up buck decided to take his frustrations out on the target!  this took place sometime in November during the peek of the rut. Hope ya'll get a kick out of it!

Just wanted to post a video of one of my successful bow hunts this year. Something about documenting your hunt and self filming adds even more of a rewarding feeling to a bow harvest when it all comes together. *Disclaimer*  I don't think I'm a "pro" nor am I trying to be just love filming and tinkering around with the editing. The audio on the video from my second doe harvest is much better than this one, I figured out a few tricks with the editing software recently and I'll have that one done by the weekend. You can skip through the talking parts if you want the shot happens around the 3:20 mark.
