growalot
Cleaning out the freezers I discovered some really old bacon I got on sale to take to camp over the years...well everyone turned to turkey bacon so it got forgotten.... Seeing season is so close I was thinking that since I caught that bear on the cam this spring I might take that bacon out to a stand area and fire up the portable Webber....get the area smoked up in stiky maple bacon grease...then the boys can have the grease that didn't burn blk over their food....That smell should travel a good ways and stay in the area awhile don't you think?...Season hasn't opened yet and I won't be leaving the burnt bacon and grease...so it's not baiting...just encouraging a look see... what do ya think?

ATbuckhunter
As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with a bacon or honey burn. I heard its less and less effective every time you use it in the season though.
Culvercreek hunt club
take 1.5 ounces out the day of and put it over a heat source. I have used a 1# coffee can as a vessel with a smaller soup can inside suspended over a sterno or candle. ...burn it and get is nice an smokey. Probably he same as honey. Legal to have 1.5 ounces. (6) It is unlawful for any person to possess a field or use more than 1.5 fluid ounces of a liquid scent or lure when hunting bear.
Culvercreek hunt club
I guess if you left the scent can there to use next time and the bear happened to get some on it feet and lay out a scent trail for him or other bears to follow?LOL.... I know they use molasses and bacon grease in Ontario because of just that. they don't expect the bears can eat much of it because it is a smear but it gets on their feet and lays a scent trail for any bear that crosses it's tracks. growalot
I know those laws and I do about the same type of set up as you Culvert...infact I had a region 9 capt tell me if you soak clothe in a larger amount of honey or bacon ...it legally takes it from "liquid" to solid and the clothe can be Smoked. Now this bacon I don't think you'd want eggs with...we're talking 2006...eeewwww anyhow I was also saying before Oct 1 opener when there is no hunting for them yet...I could burn up all 4 packs of it....then take the cooled grill and remaining yuck out of the woods...the area has acorns apples and plots ...so even if the initial smell brings them around to find no bacon or grease to eat ...they may stay or come back for the standing field corn...acorns,apples,honeysuckle berries and turnips when season opens. G-Man
i'm sure they know the corn and other food is there.. just set it up out side the cabin on a grill and forget about it while you go hunt downwind a few hundred yards... when season is open

growalot
LOL G-man...did you forget who your talking to?...It's a good idea but it's me!...See that could work at camp ...perfect wind direction.... but I'd be sitting in the stand when the sirens went off and get down to find the grill was ablaze and the wind swirled catching the camp on fire...about the time I'd arrive the flames would be marching through all the dried oak leafs taking on the beech and iron wood in the understory....Pretty sure I could not talk Mr B out of being wildly mad at me for that one.....
G-Man
well the smell might work...didnt say camp might not be there when you get back.... and that smell would linger, burned some in a pan in the house..swear it was a month before the oder was gone..or maybe i got use to it.....lmao
