PREDATE
what happened no chupacabra jokes...? :-) They're partial to elms & cottonwods. I ruled them out right away. Edited November 3, 2014 by PREDATE

growalot
I didn't see a close up of pick to see knaw marks ...but yes we have several pair here and have watched them take apart a dead tree in strips like that....and trees where it looks like they used a wood chipper on it with a neat pile of chips at the base PS I hate this new keyboard... Pugsley
I have seen a Pileated woodpecker do this to a tree in my yard. Took him 2 days. I was guessing there were bugs in the tree. I don't have a picture it was 3 years ago.
Mr.Zach
Look really close and see if you see any hair. I had some bear tear up a pine about that size in Orange county and they left some hair.
ididnotvoteforobama
This is typical of a rotting birch tree (not 100% sure this is birch) The bark is somewhat plastic like where it will hold together and rain getting in causes it to decay . Woodpeckers will then shred it looking for insects.
DirtTime
Seeing that in the OP pic, you can clearly see it was cut. Look close and you can see the straight dead edges. So IMHO, it's a tree thumper trying to get lucky with a corpse bride.
