Hornady SST slugs

Shooting these out of my fully rifled 870 and getting great groups. I am looking for info on how they perform on deer. I have heard good and bad. Thanks!

Ever since I started using them it's been 1 shot 1 kill the accuracy is one of if not the best I think

I have had up and down performance on these based on gun used (like any ammo).

 

I've used them in my muzzleloader (SSTs) and they do OK. My Mossberg liked them but my H and R Slug Hunter hates them. Killed a few deer with them, blood trails were mediocre, but often the deer hit the ground pretty quick.

I use them with my 870 and they also group awesome. I have shot a few deer with them as well. The only thing I have noticed is if you hit solid bone like the shoulder then they leave a very large exit wound and damage a good portion of meat. They usually drop pretty quick and have had good blood trails with them also.

Yeah, what phade and Trailer said. My daughter and I both got bucks Saturday. Hers was 20ga SST at 30yds roughly. Deer ran 15 yds, fell in a brook and died right away.

My buck I shot at 10 yds quartering towards me, entry in front of shoulder, deer dropped on the spot.

Her deer (20ga) had a tiny (pencil-size) entry hole in skin, no blood, but inside ribs had big damage and both lungs jelly and opposite shoulder damaged beyond edible but no exit.

Mine (12ga) had a medium entry wound, damage up into spine ( fired from low ), and tons of flesh damage in front half. 

These slugs do nasty things inside deer, but I think a wrongly placed shot might leave little or no bloodtrail to follow. I may ponder going back to foster slugs for up close work where accuracy can be off a little and save my SST's for distance shooting. My scoped guns group real nice with SST's.

I wouldn't use any other slug...period! For a slug gun, this ammo has increased my confidence in accuracy, range, and knock down power. Hard to find all three variables in other slug gun ammo.

I have had great feedback from these out of a Remington 11-87 rifled barrel.

 

I had very poor results from other ammo's for example Remington sabots grouped terrible 8" groups.

I shoot it out of my Winchester 1300 and my brother out of his Mossberg 500.............we have no reason to ever try other slugs.

There great, not the best expansion, but I have never recovered one due to them all being pass thrus. 5 deer with them for me and 4 hit the ground in there tracks, 1 went 30 yards and vitals were mush.

I've tried them, Copper Solids and Winchesters sabots out of my Mossberg 500 rifled barrel and they finished last. Of course I'm speaking just from an accuracy standpoint. Winchesters and copper solids were basically the same.

BeSt slug you can buy,work well as long as they shot good from your gun

As long as they group good, buy them by the case.  Nothing on the shelf can compare.  Every deer I've shot with them, from 25-225 yards, has dropped within sight, if not upon impact.  I won't shoot anything else through my Savage 220 or my ML.

they are over rated they are real loud they do not expand at all just go through they are tyhe same muzzle loader bullet they sell just in a sabot i used them and do not like them lightfields will expand like no other

Shot a doe with one on Sat.; first time using them.

 

Slight quarter away in at mid ribs and out back edge of off shoulder.

 

Made 2 holes and plenty of damage in between.

 

Shoot very well in a Savage 220  so til' I get a few more samples they are fine by me.

My 11-87 loves the sst's awesome slug only one ill shoot they pile up one shot every time and accuracy is amazing

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I will get to see the results for myself! Been tough sledding in 5r and haven't seen a deer since Sunday morning.

Happy to report I shot a doe today with the SSTs and she went right down. 60 yard shot in the front shoulder, she hit the ground right where she was standing. Deffinetly staying with these slugs!
