moog5050
The synthetic stock on my savage 220 came loose this year. When I tightened down the screws, I found that the rear screw near the trigger guard was stripped. How do I best add material for the screw to grab again. My thought was to remove the stock and fill the old hole with two part epoxy and then drill a pilot hole. The original screw looks to be self tapping (pointed with an aggressive thread) so I assume no tapping is required. Any thoughts? Something better than epoxy? BTW - I did order a boyds stock for replacement before I knew this happened but I still want to fix the original stock.
thphm
Another cost cutting way of doing something at the factory. They should have put threaded inserts where the screws go with a head on the opposite side from where the screws go into the stock.
loworange88
What is the screw in question holding? Trigger guard to the stock? I ask because it doesnt sound like a machine screw, and is probably not holding any metal parts to the stock? You could always clean up the hole in question and then use some Delrin or other hard "plastic" material and make a slug for the hole. Press fit into place, and drill out the slug to receive the screw. Having access or knowing someone in a machine shop can help alot with this. You might be able to find delrin or acrylic stock at home improvement stores, if not, it can be easily ordered online. OR you could do this to both holes so they are the same, then use new screws...Use a knurled threaded inserts like these: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-threaded-inserts/=vdnezy
phade
I wouldn't blame the factory for that break-up. His skull probably helped. The stock on that gun is the only thing I don't like about the 220. Throwing a Boyds on there is the ticket. moog5050
As I recall, it actually is the rear screw on the trigger guard and no its not machined. Trying to figure out a way to DIY repair this. Edited January 8, 2015 by moog5050
stoneam2006
As you said fill hole with epoxy....jb weld makes some general purpose filler that accepts tapping/threading very nicely....that's the ticket IMO...otherwise maybe a bigger dia. Screw may do it without any epoxy
stoneam2006
The only problem with a helicoil is that it requires a good thread to keep the helicoil insert installed otherwise it will just pull out of the stock.

Culvercreek hunt club
Moog, does it just screw into the plastic or into metal on the inside?
Lawdwaz
Did you check with customer service at Savage? The squeak squeak I hear coming from the wheel may just get some grease..............

moog5050
Moog, does it just screw into the plastic or into metal on the inside? Hate to admit it, but haven't removed the stock yet. I assume plastic since it stripped so easy and the thread look like a drywall screw.

pistolp71
loworange88 is correct. That screw is not holding the stock to the gun(action screws) it is just holding the trigger guard to the stock. Not a big deal.
Culvercreek hunt club
If Savage doesn't cough up a new stock, I would use the liquid 2 part epoxy. the one that comes with the mixing tip and quick set. tap off the inside, turn it upside down and inject the whole. Let it fully cure and drill a small pilot hole. If it looks super smooth in there I would try to score the sides of the hole with something to key the epoxy into the stock so it doesn't want to spin when putting the screw in. moog5050
Just called savage. It does just screw into plastic and I have to call back with my serial number and they will ship me a new stock. Good CS and pretty silly of me not to call at the outset. Hate sitting on hold. lol Thanks for all the thoughts guys.
