Doc
Any of you people doing any ice fishing? Any Luck? Any pics? We have so many years lately when the ice doesn't really cooperate, that I would guess that this would be the year for getting out there and getting pikes of fish. stoneam2006
I don't but buddy's on fb do and they are having a great year I guess....fish seem to be biting anything they say.
Doc
I used to ice fish, and I will tell you that when they are biting and the action is good, it is a heck of a lot of fun. Of course, when they aren't biting, it can be a real dismal time ..... lol. But, I was just curious how guys were making out in this exceptional year of good ice. Pygmy
Keuka is completely frozen over and the guys have been hammering the lakers jigging through the ice. I hope to get over and give it a try sometime this week. I have caught hundreds of lakers vertical jigging in open water, but I've never caught a trout of ANY species through the ice. Doewhacker
We went once this year, then the ice got too thick for my hand auger. we got a mix of small pan fish and one 3-4 pound large mouth on Ballston Lake.

grampy
Ballston lake has some BIG bass! We get there at least a couple times during the summer in the bass boat. My biggest was well over seven pounds there. Nice lake but launching the boat there is always a pain in the a.. Never tried hard water fishing on that lake though. wolc123
Largemouths don't put up much of a fight thru the ice. I did catch my largest ever in NY state that way however. It was so fat I had a hard time squeezing it up out of the hole in Brantingham lake. It had to be between 8 and 10 lbs. Smallmouth bass, on the other hand, seem to fight almost as much thru the ice as they do in open water, as do rainbow and lake trout. reeltime
made some time last week to chase winter gold, been working too much and couldn't stand it anymore and needed a fix. nothing better than stripers through the ice. Pygmy
Nice perch, Lee ! Some succulent eating there... Sodus ?
Caveman
Buddies of mine have been killing the lakers on Lake George. I haven't made it out yet. I foolishly agreed to help my parents remodel their new house and between that, work, and school, it has monopolized my weekends.
reeltime
pygmy, nope our fish here on the big lake in our area are WAY down in numbers, we are lacking decent numbers in 3 year classes. have seen it here before and no doubt the numbers will be back but for now we are traveling for our perch fishing. you are right, tough to beat the table fare value of good cold water perch. I will take them hands down over any other fresh water fish. now all I need to do is get enough free time to get out fishing so I can restock the freezer here and at camp.

grampy
Absolutely, nothing beats perch through the ice as fresh water fish go. The poor mans shrimp! Of course walleye and crappie are a close second. Very nice catches guy's!
Pygmy
I have done some hunting and fishing in central Maine, near Bingham. I was shocked to learn that the locals there COVET white perch, but scorn yellow perch. Some of them throw the yellows out on the ice for the eagles and ravens. I caught a bunch of white perch and they were quite good, but not as good as yellow perch, IMHO.
robw
Ice fishing has been pretty good. Lots of perch and quite a few others as well. Wish I could keep some of those largemouth bass...
