DirtTime
Any one on here do use a pellet/bb gun for frogs? Heading to camp next weekend, think I will take one of my air rifles and shoot some frogs and get some frogs legs as a snack.
Skillet
Yeah, when I was 12. Hunting them with a pellet gun will result in a lot of lost frogs. Unless you brain them, they will get away. We hunt them now with spears, and nothing else. If you stick them solidly, they aren't getting off the gig. Check out these guys, I bought a couple of great 5 prong gig heads from them. www.frog-gigging.com
Lawdwaz
I used to hunt them with a Crossman 760 40 years ago. We weren't looking to fill the pot, more just to hone our stalking skills for later in life. Lots of those big old green bullfrogs were crushed by the flat shooting-hard hitting copper solid bb's Good times for a 13 year old to be alive!
DirtTime
Good times for a 13 year old to be alive! 13, 30, 60, what does age have to do with it. I bet if anyone gave it a shot you might just have some fun and get a snack, or maybe enough to have a meal. What are you afraid of? Big bad hunter uses .177 ( or .22 ) cal pellet to shoot frogs? Never tried spearing. Hand catching, air gun, even a fishing pole with bright colored cloth on a small hook. There's a time to be all serious, and then there's a time to be the kid we are at heart.

wooly
A couple years ago I carved a frog poker out of an old deer leg bone. I never got it attached it to a stick to give it a whirl, but this post reminded me of the fun I had carving that sucker and might have to give it another go to actually make another to try. I don't know where I put this one now...but I remember it breaking at that delicate point near the business end.. Bad pic yanked from some old video.
DirtTime
Frogs are an over looked food. I love frogs legs. Take another shot at carving that spear head wooly. Why not?
Culvercreek hunt club
I use my fly rod with a fly attached. Split shot about a foot up and the barb on the hook pinched closed. They stay on the hook because of their weight. Easy to get off and not getting wet picking them out of the water
shawnhu
Might be easier to "fish" for frogs than to shoot them and have to go "fetch" then out of the swamps. If I was to shoot them, I would use my trusty .25 cal Marauder. I would hear stories from my dad when he used to go out at night and "shine" for them as a kid. DirtTime
Not looking at shooting them at long distance, shoreline and scoop with a small net. Just thinking it could a fun break from scouting and riding. Fishing them would be fun too, but my rods are all one piece, so strapping them to the rack on my four wheeler and slapping them against trees on the way in and busting them will stink. Just thinking out loud.
jjb4900
you could probably catch them with just a stick and a line with a hook and bait attached....no need to pack a pole.

Deleted
Rob, I used to shoot a lot of frogs with an air rifle. Like skillet said, head shots are best. They're a lot of fun to hunt, and like you said, TASTY! Good Luck Rob, and have fun.
DirtTime
Just got off the phone with a buddy. Brought this up to him, he says can't hunt with an air gun in NY. I thought they legalized air gins in NY as long as they travel at least 600fps. Did this change? Definitions Air gun - a firearm that uses spring or compressed air (not gunpowder) to propel a single projectile that is .17 caliber or larger and produces a muzzle velocity of at least 600 feet per second. Smooth or rifled bore air guns are allowed. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28182.html Not like I would use lead pellets, lotta options for non lead. http://www.gamousa.com/family.aspx?familyID=79 Wow, I know this might seem like a silly topic to most, but air gun hunting is ( was ) pretty popular. shawnhu
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27801.html Air guns are here to stay. Update your friend and suggest he stays current with hunting regulations before he goes on giving out wrong information. DirtTime
Yeah, he was on a roll tonight. We take the air rifles no mater what. We like to plink cans with air rifles. So figured why not shoot a few frogs. Yeah, I know, seems childish to hunt frogs with an air rifle. But, I am a 'buckeroo'!

I always thought it was a lot of fun, and good practice. If you want to get laughed at, show up for a frog hunt with a longbow. I don't usually kill as many frogs as my buddy does, but I know I have more fun. Edited August 1, 2015 by Traditional Archer

If it works and you enjoy doing it then have at it. The guy I camp with's air rifle is an old Daisy pulti-pump, I think it max's out at like 300fps, but, he wont hunt anything. Except his But Light Lime cans. LOL I don't have high end air rifles, but they are legal and shoot 630 FPS, so I figure WTH, break up the monotony! If you have access to a chronograph, give it a whirl and see for yourself. turkeyfeathers
Back when I was a kid we'd use a 15 " golf ball retriever with about a 2' piece of fishing line, a hook and a piece of red yarn on the hook. You can dangle very precisely the yarn in front of their faces. Pellet pistols as well but like someone else mentioned, too many lost frogs and wading into the swamps for retrieval always produced many leeches on our legs. God I hate leeches !
