Who owns one...and what are your thoughts. Also what caliber are you shooting?

Does it replace your deer rifle, or is it just a fun addition to your hunting arsenal?

G1, 10 in barrel, Mitet Red Dot, 41 Mag.

It has't replaced my rifles yet, I'm only comfortable up to 50 yards right now. Haven't had a chance to take anything with it yet.

I have several barrels . Best 45/70 have taken 5 deer out to 50 yds have a t/c scope

10" .44 mag with 2x Leupold that I've taken a few deer with. My other barrels are mainly for woodchucks.

 

The .44 in a shoulder holster is nice if you're crawling through brier patches or picking your way through a swamp where you need both hands free and the shots will be close in.

It's another tool in the arsenal.

not a Contender but have an Encore. It is .308 win with a 15' barrel. Have taken coyote and deer. If I can get a rest I wouldn't hesitate out to 200 yards. I fitted a rifle stock to the barrel so it can take a bipod. It will never replace my rifle but it sure is fun to have as an option to use

Culver. What mods did you have to do to get the rifle forearm onto your pistol? I have modified pistol forearms to accept a bipod but they have not lasted.

I have a contender in 7-30 waters,14 in barrel, straight 4 power leupold on it.necked down

30-30 shooting Spitzer pointed bulltes. I've taken 3 deer with it. Best shot was a buck running quatering away my buddy hit in the leg. I dropped it at 65 yards. I was on the ground tracking a doe I hit a half hour earlier. The 2 deer died 15 yards apart. I take it out if I already have 2 in the freezer. It's fun but definitely a challenge.

My buddy has one in 35 Rem. that, he has taken several deer with over the years.  He wants to trade it with me for one of my S&W revolvers. Im on the fence because last time I shot his contender, I couldn't hit the side of a barn with it. And I was IN the barn!

I have one in 35rem, fun toy but to me impractical for hunting too heavy and big to be a pistol and very difficult to shoot freehand so if moving you have to find a rest and or carry sticks. Add the gun and the sticks and I'm carrying more weight than one of my tikka's. If you have a solid rest they are not difficult to shoot so the pistol challenge isn't really there either. I wanted one for a while got a deal on mine I will never get rid of it because they are cool just not for me.

Culver. What mods did you have to do to get the rifle forearm onto your pistol? I have modified pistol forearms to accept a bipod but they have not lasted.

It didin't seem like the pistol foreends were set up well to take a bipod so I took a rifle forearm and redrilled it. I believe the rear mounting screw was in the same location on each so the front screw need to be redrilled to mount on the pistol barrel. this did two things. it allowed it to mount but then left a hole to mount a swivel for the bipod attachment. it is rock solid. I will see if I can get a good pic of it for you. I used laminate wood stocks. not sure how the synthetic would work.

Nice setup!! I see Dr.Tony Gettel does a similar setup but quite pricey for laminate foreend and grips.  What grips are those? 

 

You are right about the pistol foreend not holding up.  After about 6 shots my Harris ended up ripping right out of the forearm...

That is correct...The action of the Contender is not considered strong enough for .308 Win pressures.

 

A buddy of mine had an Encore in 7MM08 for sale awhile back..If you are interested I could check with him to see if he still has it.

.35 rem was the biggest and baddest pistol barrel out there, for a while. T/C sold a bunch of them until the Herrett wildcats gained favor. The .35  and 30-30 are ill-suited to the pistol setup. I'm a decent shot and a good hand-loader, and I've never been able to get anything beyond mediocre results with either of them.

I've never heard of that Eddie. Is that an Ontario county thing?

I have one frame and one permit. The barrels have always been considered 'accessories'. That's why you can still buy and sell them on ebay.

 

I went through the registration process in Wayne county in 1980, left the county in 1981, and other than notifying Wayne county of my whereabouts since then I haven't had an issue. When I moved to Ontario county I went to the courthouse to change my permit and they said, "Here's the paperwork if you really want to do it, but as long as your address is up to date it's not necessary." OK.

 

I still have the old paper permits, though, so I actually do need to update to the one-for-all card.

Monroe is the same. Each caliber is listed on my permit with the frame serial number. Now I could have a truckload of 308 barrels of varying lengths but they don't seem to care as long as the caliber is listed. That is part of the problem with NYS's permitting system. Every county can do their own thing

A Sheriff Deputy friend said I only needed one permit that stated Multi- Barrels . A Trooper Friend and the County Clerk said each one had to be registered on it's own caliber . I didn't want to walk out of a field with a 223 and have my permit show 44 mag . For $3 each , I have peace of mind . Better safe than sorry ! 

The barrels alone are just considered a piece of pipe until they are attached to a frame .
