Some more birds..

Here are only a few pics from the latest card pull, i had hundreds of pictures of birds strutting in 2 weeks time. This camera is over my "murder plot", September 2015 planted WI forage oats, and WI clover. And my blind is setup just off the corner of the frame on the right side. 

 

Come May 1st i will put the cam on video, which will record sound as well in HD..

Looks like you are gonna have an action packed opening morning. The birds in my end of the county are keeping a low profile.

We have not had numbers of turkeys like that, on our properties, in quite a few years now. For a variety of reasons. But they are slowly making a come back. Hoping for a warm dry spring after the mild winter we had. We did not hunt them last year and we are debating if we should this year. Awesome pictures by the way!!!

The numbers look good again, we hammered them hard last year. Took 6 longbeards last year all had 1-1/8" spur and bigger. Was nervous for this year. But it looks good so far. Again, these are only a few of the pics I had.

The only downfall is, I may have a hard time pulling them in when there's 19 hens with 2 strutters!! Lol

We've had good turkey numbers here in 8P for a long time. Once we take 5 or so birds we stop hunting so we don't wipe them out. Nothing better than listening to and seeing an action packed spring morning in the woods! I'd guess there's 30+ birds here.

I've seen more birds everywhere this year compared to years pass..

One tom can breed many hens, but I agree there are alot of hens to pull them away from.. good thing 80% of breeding is done in april.

Numbers here have been lower than historian good old days in the 90's , but birds are here.

Still severely dissapointed in shortening the season last fall as it'd the only way to keep hen numbers down a little (yes I target hens in the fall) 1 hen can lay 12 to 18 eggs.. doesn't take much to increase the population fast.. a good dry may is about it. We do keep the predators down through trapping and that helps a lot with preserving early nesting birds.

Exactly what I though G Man. I would never shoot a red head in fall. Only in spring. It's more fun and challenging I think. I have never went out to fall turkey hunt, but any hen turkey to give me a shot opportunity in the fall season while bow hunting whitetail.. I will try to harvest. It's kind of the same way qdm works in the deer woods.. in a way. As long as turkey numbers are plentiful.. take a hen or 2. They will get bred either way come spring.. I'm sure a Tom will find her when she's ready...

Unless plans change, I will be taking my fiances younger cousin out Saturday 4/23 for the youth hunt. And on Sunday 4/24 i will be taking the neighbor boy out on their property across the rd.

Kind of cool to see the way a flock of breeding turkeys moves through the woods.

 

Two old (3.5 and up) lead a flock of hens.

The two black birds on the right side of the frame are the curmudgeons, leading about 12 hens.

The third frame is a good sized group of gals for my neck of the woods (on the Pa. border) these days.

The fourth frame shows a 2.5 year old trailing the hen group and two adult toms, at a respectful distance.

Just a few more from the past week card pull. Couple more cams got put out yesterday.. looking forward to seeing the results..

Couple more, the one bird got me to chuckle pretty good lol. I have got another cam set up in one of our famous kill spots.. that my buddy took a big bird right in front of on Tuesday morning. he said there should be some good pics on there..

Wish I knew how to do the cam/pic thing, as I sit here typing I have 3 toms & 3 hens in my yard. The toms are taking turns strutting, fully fanned out  30 ft. behind the house. Fun to watch, not hunting them this yr., pets the wife says.  I say I should get some return on my bird seed they ate all winter!
