Whatever they are they sure are weird.  Pretty cool to see something in your life you've never seen before.  probably happens more if we pay better attention.

All kidding aside, don't think I've seen these before. Pretty cool looking. I wonder if the deer prefer them over other other more common nuts? Could be a hot spot if they do!

Looks like a burr oak. Not too many of them on the east coast, but also not very high on the deer's list of acorns it prefers. They will eat them though, especially if the acorn crop is bad like its looking this year.
