I know before you needed a different breech plug if you wanted to shoot Blackhorn 209 powder in a CVA, the stock plug will work fine with T7 , Pyrodex or and BP subs but won't ignite BH209 100% of the time.

As for bullets ,don't waste your time on Power Belts ,they may shoot accurate but lack performance on game .

He could try:

hornady  300gr FPB

.452  250-300gr XTP in a crush rib or mmp sabot,

.452 250gr FTX in crush rib or mmp sabot

.452 300gr deep curls from Speer if you can find them , that's the best bullet going for a ML today I think  .

any of the Barnes line of bullets in stock sabots or harvester / mmp

Have him start at low powder charge of 70-80gr  or two pellets if that's what he is going to use .

A few models come with a Bergara barrel . Plenty of people upgrade the barrel on their Thompson to a Bergara barrel because they out perform the rest.

Jeremy, have you found any facts to back the above statement up? Seems your the only one that got bent over my facts and opinions.

I have an old CVA Optima Pro, matched up with Triple 7 Primers, powder, and Powerbelts.  Shot 3 deer with it, all dropped in their tracks. I don't know how more effective on game a bullet can be...  Save money, buy a CVA.  It's only two extra weeks.  Spend the money saved on a scope, powder and bullets.  Find the right combo for your specific gun and you''ll kill deer.

Any luck finding proof to back that up ?
He will enjoy the gun Biz. What powder and bullet choice will he be trying out when it arrives ....

Yes in fact CVA guarantees there barrels will never rust or they will replace them for free.

Jeremy was referring to their shooting abilities after swapping out a TC barrel to a bergara barrel .

That guarantee applies to barrel / guns with nitride .The down side to nitride treatment is it will change the heat treatment of the barrels. This isn't an issue in AR guns but could be in a muzzloader barrel. I am unsure if CVA will give you an exact heat treatment used on their barrels.

I have seen a few at the club who have actually gotten a cerakote coating applied over the nitride finish. For me, I got my White thunderbolt coated in black ice, no chipping or flaking what so ever and the action actually became smoother...

TGIF to all.

But what he doesn't know is if xbow doesn't get full inclusion, i am buying the baddest compound out there and going to kill a big buck on 10/1! Haha

So, if you are going to be the baddest bow hunter on the site, why not beat all the Southern Zone hunters and start in September up north? You have the cash to get a guided hunt, or if you want to go DYI you can stay with your buddies up here.

Sounds like you may be a bit scared of your dad getting a bigger racked deer then you, using the ML. Best of luck to the both of you. Rooting for your dad though.

Biz ,once he gets it have him place a witness mark on that ram rod , your going to want to make sure the bullet seats all the way against the charge.

Nice looking setup,good luck.

Nah, I'll use xbow if they give full inclusion. Don't want to spend the $ on a new bow and arrows etc and then spend the time to practice etc. unless I have to in order to hunt 10/1. It would really just give me an extra 2-3 saturdays in October hunt. Not going to miss Sunday NFL for it.

Very good point there.......there's a bit of a learning curve with ML'ing and at some point, Papa Biz will be getting a BTDT t-shirt for xmas after some kind of oops moment with the new rig.

Bizzy.........Does dad have any experience with a ML"er?
