I remember back in the nineties for a few years you could pick one up at Dicks Sporting Goods for about 119.00. I sure wish I did. At that time I bought a Chinese SKS for about the same. That was surprisingly a really well built and fun rifle, but I traded it on something. Wish I still had it.

Yep  one of the best do all guns the military ever came up with  in my opinion light weight little recoil short compact  and  still decent power  with in 100 yards for what ever you want to shoot at .

I love my carbine. It’s a great plinking gun, I think my goal this year is going to be to take a deer with both my carbine and my Garand. I will treat the carbine almost like a bow and only take close shots

When I was in 81mm mortors in 1959 / 1960 we had an Indian named Corporal Yaberra . He had been busted in rank several times and was a drinker . Cpl Yaberra was a survivor of the Chosen Reservoir battle and didn't talk much . He said they fired their M1's sideways and just kept pulling the trigger . One us rookies asked him about the M1 carbine and he went bonkers . He said they were a piece of crap and that they couldn't penetrate the NC / Chinese padded winter coats . I never saw or fired one of the carbines so I really don't know if it was fact other than hearing the same thing later from old salts talking in a bar .

Rattler   only one I know that tried it , he said he    shot a 4 point years ago with his  .30 Carbine from  30 yards away standing broadside.  The bullet was a 110 grain soft point.  The shot took out both lungs. He said   It ran 50 yards and fell over.

The Korea vets that I talked to sometimes  spoke of holding the M-3 Grease Guns sideways, which might make sense facing a human wave attack...However I can see no advantage of holding an M-1 sideways...It would be much more effective fired  upright the way it was intended to be fired....Also, the BARS tended to freeze up in the subzero temps...Many guys preferred just to carry the M-1 with extra bandoliers..They go BANG when  you need them to..

" There's a thousand gooks comin' through the pass playing burp gun boogey all over my ass..

I'm movin on... I'll soon be gone....

Well it ain't no joke when your M-1 s broke, I'm movin on  "

The carbine had it's place.....Light to carry for  non front line troops like artillerymen, and also very handy for close quarters combat like jungle fighting and house to house  combat....Lots of firepower....

But for combat in relatively open country at any distance over 50 yards, it wasn't a pimple on an M-1's ass...

There are also many accounts  of bad guys taking multiple hits with the carbine, not only NK/Chinese in Korea, but Japs in WWII,

and staying on their feet....Not so with the 30-06..Solid torso hit and down they go.....

I can see that but there just walking dead as in they will be dead it's just going to take a few minutes or hours if there is no medic around  depending on the situation that could be just as good.  then his buddy's have to stop fighting to help him out . At least that's theory you here about smaller caliber bullets replacing things like 30-06 in the military.

I do yes, do you prefer Springfield WRA or it doesn’t matter? Do you want a shooter or a collectors piece

NO... The main advantage of smaller cartridges in the military is because a soldier can carry more rounds...

A guy who can still walk after a solid hit can still kill you....A military round should at least incapacitate an enemy soldier with a single solid torso hit...Any of the .30s, including the 7.62x 39, will do that. and the higher velocity smaller caliber rounds like the 5.56 will also do it  most of the time...The .30 carbine....It is an effective round within it's limitations, but not nearly as effective as commonly used rounds  for true  battle rifles, like the M1, L1A1 or modern assault rifles...There is a good reason why the military has brought a lot of M 14s out of mothballs in the wide open spaces of the Middle east and Afghanistan..

A battle rifle should be capable of effectively engaging enemy forces out to 600 + yards...An assault rifle should do it to at least 300 yards...The carbine is stretching it to engage an enemy at 100 yards, and it is getting pretty anemic at that range...

Yes but this was before ar 15s

Nothing really else in that category back then  .  And its still a great gun if you don't want or have a Ar 15  handy . Better ammo these days for it  makes it more effective now then back then also  probably.

The .30 M1 Carbine was never meant to be a battle rifle.  It was supposed to be issued to troops as an improvement over a .45 ACP pistol.  Troops that weren't front line combat troops, like cooks and Jeep drivers,  needed something light and handy, yet powerful enough to defend themselves with if they needed to.  The .30 Carbine was a much better weapon for that purpose than a 1911 .45 ACP.  Troops that found themselves using it in combat were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and needed to hold their fire until the enemy was close, or else they were just wasting ammo.
