Steuben Jerry
Holy crap. https://www.foxnews.com/great-outdoors/arkansas-deer-hunter-attack-dead I don't know about waiting 30 mins like the end of the article says, but I am a firm believer in touching them in the eye before any field dressing activities commence. Robhuntandfish
My xBIL shot a buck one time and it went right down. Went over to the buck and couldn't figure where he hit it. Buck jumps up and he shoots it and it goes down. Looks over buck and he had hit it in the horns and knocked it out. Even found the broken piece of horn.
Moho81
How horrible! I usually wait then slowly make my way close to the down deer look for signs that its still alive like the chest cavity moving up and down even then for good measure I'll poke it with a really long stick. The_Real_TCIII
Sounds like he had a heart attack, sensationalism at its finest. Very sad story though RIP

Core
7 minutes ago, The_Real_TCIII said: The comments are predictable KARMA, etc. I'm sure these people would not post the same if a cattle rancher was killed by one of his cows. Waiting 30 minutes is nonsense. Poke it or, frankly, look at it. It's really not hard to tell if a deer is dead if you look at its face. My guess is since it was clearly a buck (this wouldn't happen with a doe), he came up from behind and surprised it, so it attacked. Not a fun way to go, though. nyslowhand
Last I saw, the officials weren't sure hunter died of the goring or a heart attack. Not to make light of the hunter's death, but as life-long hunter I can think of worse ways to go to the happy hunting grounds!
