Rattler
The DEC wants to speak to the cam owner to verify where it was taken. https://hudsonvalleyone.com/2020/02/21/possible-mountain-lion-sighted-in-the-hudson-valley/
Rattler
The mountain lion subject has been discussed in these forums before. Basically, the idea they travel through NY state is accepted, but there is no breeding population and no permanent residents. It always gets a rise out of a lot of people though, whenever the subject comes up, since many have claimed to have proof they are in NY, but that proof usually turns out to be fraudulent. I think it would be cool to see this trail cam photo turn out to be legit. but even if it is legit, that cat is probably miles away from that area now. They keep moving looking for a mate, which they won't find in NY. 2
steve863
Are mountain lions the “cat” in “Catskills”? Unclear. Leslie T. Sharpe in The Quarry Fox: And Other Critters of the Wild Catskills considered the question. The mountain range was apparently named after the creek, but how the creek got its name is lost. Did an early settler see a mountain lion drinking from its waters one day? Or more likely, a bobcat? I'm getting a kick out of this paragraph in the link. A settler seeing a mountain lion drinking from a creek? It was more likely the settler drinking some sort of spirit from a jug when he saw that cat!! Rattler
Well, they were actually here as late as the end of the 1800's. "Mountain lions have not had a native, self-sustaining population in the New York State since the late 1800s, according to DEC."
Steuben Jerry
You know, it would kind of cool to see that our little part of the ecosystem could hold mountain lions even if they were just passing through. But damn, that would really change the walks to and from the deer stand in the dark!

A few years ago..with granite out droppings and ponderosa pine in background...

Eric J
Did the DEC explain this sighting from last year? https://www.newyorkupstate.com/outdoors/2018/07/video_upstate_ny_man_says_he_saw_a_mountain_lion_what_do_you_think.html
Bigfoot 327
One thing that I have not seen in any of the NY mountain Lion discussions is the fact that if there was any sort of mountain lion, cougar, panther (whatever you want to call them) population is that they would be showing up as road kill. Florida has a small panther population, perhaps 130 to 250 animals, that is monitored closely by the FWC. Already this year, 4 or 5 have been hit by vehicles and one was hit by a train. In 2016 a record 34 were killed in collusions. This is a huge number considering how small the population is. This demonstrates that vehicle collisions are a significant mortality factor in panther populations. No reason to believe that if they were present in any sort of numbers in NY they would not be showing as road kill.
