Icelandic mayonnaise?!?! And from a Icelandic hot dog truck ?!?

While the fishing story was intriguing (and certainly moved Iceland up a peg or two on my “to see” list) the food, culture and persona of your locales take the headline.

Oh man, I keep having to dump all the travel stuff to make my editor happy.

The hot dogs are otherworldly. They are also affordable as everything in Iceland is stupid expensive. I ate a lot of hotdogs.

Another great story.  Even had fish porn . But no pic of the hotdogs... dang .

That's literally only one of two fish pics I've ever taken.

Thanks.

I pulled that when The Flyfish Journal wanted to publish it.

Where are you going and what would you like to do? There are inexpensive day trips out of Reykjavik. Start here: https://gofishing.is/

We’re going to be there for 10 days. Spending a couple of days in Reykjavik at the start and then we’ll loop back. Plan was to do a day trip from there. I like the highlands and the possibility of targeting both Arctic char and brown trout but I’m flexible here. I was looking at gofishing and fishpartner as both specify that they supply gear. Mostly I’m just looking for a good guide who likes teaching.

Keep in mind that those prices are with guide and gear. Day tickets on a particular river are much less. I think I paid $75 for the Varma in late September. But it sounds like you need a guide. I guess keep reaching out until you find the one that sounds like a good fit. They're a nice people. FYI - when I fished there a few years ago, my guide was a little offended that I offered a tip. He said that he makes a good living. That may have changed so do a little research.

I'm sure you know that all the rivers are private and you have to pay to fish them. Salmon rivers are very expensive. There are a few less expensive options such as renting an airbnb with river rights or the fishing card. For about $50 you have the rights to fish 36 lakes around the country. No rivers though. If you're travelling around and just want to wet a line, that's a good way to do it. https://nat.is/veidikortid-fishing-card/

I might bring a rod and reel. Pick up a few flies in Reykjavik and try your luck on the road. You never know.

General stuff:

If you bring any fishing gear it needs to be disinfected at the airport for a cost. $50?

If you rent a car, get all the insurance. There are many gravel roads (and roads that are off limits to anything other than a 4WD) and they wreak havoc on cars. They even have a dust insurance which is necessary in the south. Cars are very expensive in Iceland and therefore very expensive to fix.

Eat hotdogs. There's a famous stand in Reykjavik but they are great the island over. Also affordable.

If you like to drink, bring a bottle. Also expensive.

It's very cool. Enjoy.

We’re renting a RAV4 (with insurance) that will hopefully handle our big loop out past Skaftafell. I definitely want to go with an outfitter that can help fill my equipment (and knowledge) gaps. Good idea to bring a rod and mess around on my own too. I’ll have to look at river access without a guide - fishing card may work… maybe for Gislholtsvatn. Also, hotdogs? I want a sheep’s head

Honestly, for a day of fishing I would get a guide. Then get the card. It comes with a brochure and you'll probably pass a lake or two on your trip.

Tell you what. Go to the hotdog stand in Reykjavik and order two with the works. If you don't think they're the best you've ever had, I'll refund your money.

Sheep's head and fermented shark ... you're on your own.

I can sell you an NFT for one bitcoin.
It's not a very helpful how-to article. More just me losing my mind in Iceland while trying to catch a fish.
