Well im back from my trip to Iowa. It was a great trip out there even though we didnt find too many sheds. The property that we were on is an awesome piece of land for hunting with both corn and bean fields and a big patch of woods and fingers in the middle as well as two ponds. Deer sign everywhere but i just dont think a lot of the bucks are staying on his farm in the winter b/c of lack of winter food. We found 4 sheds total and i got three of them so i guess it wasnt too bad of a trip for me lol.

Here are some pics.

My friend found the first one which was a hanger but a small 2 point side

That was it for the first day we didnt find anymore until day two.

The first one i came across was actually broken off in a fight and not a shed.

After that i walked up to another small hay field and i was able to find a nice 4 point side

WIth snow covering most of the field i decided to hit the woods again and wait until later on in the day to cover the rest of the field. I didnt find any in the woods but once i went back to the field i spotted the 3rd antler for me which was a real good 5 point side. his g4 was broken off but i was still happy to finally come across a good one.

Here is a pic of all the sheds together.

We also got to go up to the deer classic which was pretty awesome. Ive never seen soo many huge bucks in my life. Im going to start applying for my bow tag out there and hopefully i will be hunting that property again once i finally get my license.

I cant wait to get back out down here on Long Island this weekend and see if i can add some more to the collection.

Gonna be a long 3-4 years for you. I'm in the same boat...no "ins" but my partner and I are starting points pruchasing this year.

Looks like a fun trip. I'm going to Ohio this weekend for scouting and hopefully a shed or two and then the Ohio Expo (same company runs the Iowa show) two weeks after that. Found a shed while hunting Ohio last year...pretty neat...picked it up as we were packing stands out after the week was over.

Good Luck out there Phade!!! I actually got invited to hunt a private farm out there this year for late muzzleloader in zone 3. THe landowner said that i have a very good chance of drawing a tag. I might go for it but im not sure if i want to just start purchasing the points so i can hunt there with the bow instead in 3 years. Either way i will be back out there someday and hope to take down one of those awesome iowa giants!!!

Im thinking I need to start building up my points in Iowa, its one of those places on my hunting bucket list. Ill have to look into it.

Do it now...we can go in on the trip, ha. Either public or private...we can figure that out.

Illinois is also on my list, along with Kentucky, Ohio, Kansas, Montana and Canada. My fiance's family is from Texas, and she has a couple of uncles that own land and know alot of people with money out there, so Im sure Ill hunt Texas at some point as well. Thats just for Whitetails. I also have lists for Mulies and Elk.

I have access to a private farm to hunt in iowa, a friend moved there 7 years ago bought 650 acres. Just not modivated to go for deer there are a lot here. Been thinking about going for phesant as there aren't to many here.. He sends me the regs and season information though every year for deer best part is he doesn't hunt!!. lots of short seasons and lots of opening days with time off inbetween each seson so deer can return to normal. I personally just cant see going to a different state for what i can hunt here... now if they had elk... :)

My uncle has gone there and a few friends, a lot of 130-150 in buck. the big ones are just as rare there as they are here my uncle has passed on every buckhe's seen in iowa as he could shoot thesame caliber of deer here, he continues to go in hopes of being in the right spot right time while he's out there. All the media shows it the big ones, and i get a kick out of the mags...same deer in 6 different ones...touting the midwest as deer mecca. pa,ny has the same potential . just need to hunt smart and hard. the big difference there is hunter numbers. here in ny maybe 4-5 guys on 100 acres, there 1-2 on 1000. I truly believe more big bucks die from old age in ny than are ever shot. they get big by being smart and are maybe seen 1-2 times in their lives. i have found a lot of buck skeleton in my area that have 5-7in cir pedicals. never saw the hunting but find their bones ....
