  1. Just got a call, from someone "in the know" he drives a green jeep with emblems on the doors and light bar on top.... He said you can have your gun loaded, arrow knocked in complete darkness there is nothing written in the law against it. You could sit in your stand at 2AM with a loaded gun and untill you FIRE at a deer, you've done nothing wrong. He even mentioned coyotes.... which you could shoot. Now if your creeping along a field edge watching, stopping ect. you could have an issue. One such time he arrested the guy because he asked him "what are you doing? and he said he thought something might pop out..". If the guy did not say that there was not much he could have done. We're going to meet up next time I hunt,if anyone has more questions.

  2. Once you have killed it, it's MEAT...Hang it anyway you want to.. RESPECT is involved before the deer dies.. It involves trying to make a clean kill and then making a responsible effort to recover the animal after the shot. The only way to disrespect a dead animal would be to wantonly waste the meat.

  3. By the way, I ain't GREEK, but I love lamb,,, I only ate goat once, on a business trip to Monterrey, Mexico in 1977. I went to a restaurant with a few people from the plant I was working at. The menu offered a hind leg from a kid goat. I ordered it, and it was very good..I would compare the flavor to domestic rabbit.. I also remember that the cerveza frio was excellent, and the senoritas were BEAUTIFUL...

  8. I have a copy of the "Environmental Conservation Law of New York". I spent a significant amount of time on stand this morning trying to find some mention of a law regarding disabling a bow or emptying a gun during hours outside of legal hunting times. Yeah, I know ...... that's a heck of a way to hunt .... lol. But I did frequently stop and scan the area for incoming deer. As it turned out, the wind was blowing like a hurricane, and I suspect the deer were all hugging the ground. Anyway, the only references to disarming that I could find regarded the use of lights or transport in motor vehicles, and had nothing to do with hunting hours. So, I came to the same conclusion as above that this idea of a requirement to lock bows and empty guns is pretty much something that somebody made up and maybe thought might make a good law. If somebody can point out the exact section number and paragraph designation of such a law, I will stand corrected. But until that time I have decided that the disarming requirement is pretty much BS.

  9. It's okay to drag it out by the neck, but not hang it by the neck? Really?? I think it's more disrepectful to be criticizing someone for the way he hangs his deer.

  11. It is true that some do. It is easy to look at Obama's record over the last four years and decide if that is what you would like or not for the next four years. But with Romney, the only thing people have to go on is what occurred the last time we had a Republican president. So I don't see how you can avoid talking about what happened under 8 years of a Republican if you want to have an honest debate. I understand that Bush isn't running now and he has been gone for almost 4 years, however, we can't really look at Romney's record as governor of Mass because he was a liberal then. I don't see either of these choices making any significant changes. We are in for more of the same regardless of who wins the election.

  13. Thanks for defining "Upstate". As I don't know anyone outside of NYC who uses that term, and was foggy on where it is. I live in Western NY btw, sometimes I hunt in the Southern tier, and I camp in the North country. Someday i hope to see "upstate" though. Heres my hunt of a couple years back. 3:30 get off sofa take shower and put on camo. 3;45 load bow and climber in van drive 1/2 mile. 3:46 walk in climb tree. 4:00 shoot doe, gut it drag it 100 yards to my van. 4:30 hang it from tree in front yard . 5;00 drink a beer and fall asleep exhausted. Good luck hunting, many here ,most? would not hunt at all if they had to do what you do !

  16. opening afternoon, had my daughter with me, her tenth birthday today, so we went together. She was watching a lower meadow while i was wtching the top and she spotted two doe come out of some tall grass/goldenrod. they crossed the creek, came up into our area and took one after she came into an open lane. It was awesome for my daughter, she was pretty stoked. I shot it at a guesstimation of 75 yards with my new 7mm08. She ran into the field and dropped. blew her heart in 2. Tagged and hanging from the chainfalls in the garage right now, will take for processing in the morning.

  17. Just to interject, the way in which the CPI is currently calculated is complete bullshit. Staple items like FOOD AND ENERGY are not included in the consumer common basket. Now I don't know about you, but I know that aside from my mortgage, feeding my family and heating my home are a pretty sizeable portion of my non-discretionary spending budget. Also, they represent an ever growing portion thereof. Notice the price of food going up, but the net weight or volume of the product purchased going down? That's an inflationary effect, I'm sure you'll agree. However, it's not calculated as part of the CPI, ergo the calculated inflation rate is artificially low. Sorry, but you can take that "inflation is less than 3%" bullshit and put it where it belongs. Out back in the manure pile.

  19. no it is not the law. It is private property and regardless of the reason, you can not trespass The DEC can not make them give the deer back and they take it.

  20. I'm not too sure what the deer think about absolutely dead quiet surroundings, but I will say that I am not too fond of those conditions. I always feel so darned vulnerable. Kind of like every breath I take, or movement I make stands out to any deer within range. It's nice to be able to hear and see a deer from a long distance, but they can hear and see everything that you do as well. I prefer a little cover-breeze. Not a howling wind, but just enough to get a few leaves moving, and cover at least some of those subtle sounds that you make when you re-position yourself and draw your bow. A little breeze also keeps the scent direction just a little more constant too.

  21. Why? It works just fine as is. There is absolutely nothing confusing about it. Shoot a deer after sunset, you broke the law.

  24. Well rifle starts in northern zone tomorrow. According to sunrise/sunset calendar, sunrise is at 0720 where I hunt. If one were to shoot a coyote at 0710, how would it be illegal? BTW, as we all no it would be light enough to shoot at 0710, so no "special" coyote hunting equipment would be required.

  25. It has been a while since I have been active on the site, but after getting back into archery this year have gone a little crazy again for hunting. Anyhow, I am a college student in Virginia so no longer have many opportunities to hunt in New York. I did have a four day weekend during achery season, so this year I brought my bow south and prepared. I only had two full days and two half days to hunt so I tried to make the best of it. Spent evenings and mornings in stands, and mid day moving stands to better achery locations. Passed on two young bucks my first morning out, had a real nice big bodied buck pass by stand a little too early on my second morning out, but on my third and final morning I had three young bucks come through. I took the lead one which happened to be this small six point. At only fifiteen yards and broadside, I could not have asked for a better opportunity. The ramcat broadhead did its job passing through ribs, lungs, and the heart. The arrow disappeared in the deer, but only came through the otherside when the buck fell about 60 yards away. I like chasing the large bucks as much as anyone, but having not taken a deer with the bow since highschool, I was pumped to put one down. Especially from a stand I had only thrown up the day before. The one picture shows the exit wound in the heart. It may have gone sixty yards, but it was dead the moment it fell. The other two bucks actually stayed around for another ten minutes. Thanks for reading!
