After a missed opportunity on a bird that came in hot off the roost early in the morn (came in to my hard right and being that I'm a right handed shooter I couldn't swing on him before he got nervous and headed back into the timber) I headed to a diff farm to do some walking and calling along the ridges. Seen this Tom strutting in a patch of thick stuff and after repositioning myself several different times and getting the delta hen out, I called him right to the end of the barrel. Had a blast calling him through the timber and listening to his gobbles echo that sweet spring song!8 points

An interesting new avenue of the fight against the NYS Safe Act. http://wivb.com/2014/05/07/south-dakota-ag-challenges-new-york-gun-ban/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A New York state ban on semi-automatic weapons sets a worrying precedent that could affect the rights of South Dakotans and people across the country to use such weapons in hunting, the South Dakota Attorney General said in a court filing. South Dakota joined 21 states in supporting a court challenge to New York’s ban on semi-automatic weapons. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said semi-automatic guns are among the “arms” protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, so the New York ban is unconstitutional. “Hunting with semi-automatic firearms for pheasant, waterfowl and big game is commonplace in South Dakota,” Jackley said in a statement. “While the ban only applies to New York at this time, the federal court’s upholding of the gun ban sets a concerning precedent interpreting limitations on Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding citizens including here in South Dakota.” A federal judge in December allowed most of New York’s new gun control law to stand, rejecting arguments that its bans on large-capacity magazines and the sale of popular semi-automatic rifles violates gun rights. Judge William Skretny in Buffalo, New York, argued that those provisions in the law are constitutional because they’re related to achieving an “important governmental interest” in public safety. The law was adopted following the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school in late 2012. The New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association, sportsmen’s groups, firearms businesses and gun owners filed the suit. The “friend of the court” brief signed by the 22 states was filed in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals based in New York. ___ The case is Nojay v. Cuomo.2 points

A friend invited me to his family's land to turkey hunt w/ him. He had never turkey hunted before. Nice place and lots of sign. We got out Monday and had immediate action, 2 or 3 on the roost and I began to work them, however in the middle of bringing them in I enticed 3 jakes from bind us, who actually came in silent from our left across a big field 70-80 yards out and went in the direction of the big boys, and I never heard from them again. The remainder of the day was very uneventful although my buddy was happy to have seen and heard some birds. The next day, Tuesday had so many birds going from the time we stepped out of the house I did not know where to start. I began with a bird across the street and we set up on him and listened to him go crazy in the tree with the help of an owl and the other birds in the area. When I heard him fly down I gave him a few soft calls, to which he answered, but he did not want to play, he headed off in the other direction and we went back behind the farm. I intended to work the same birds from Monday, and while heading to the area we heard one gobble on his own. We immediately set up on this lone bird and I began trying to bring him in, he was going crazy answering me and as he was coming in I realized had a real hen helping from behind. I thought she was going to screw the whole thing up, but I think she may have actually helped, I stopped calling and let her do the work. Within 5-7 minutes he appeared. My buddy was able to take him at 30 yards. He had an 8" beard and 1 " spurs, probably 19-20 lbs. I think my friend is hooked on Turkey hunting. I am so satisfied that I was able to help him harvest his 1st bird and get out in the woods and create a memory which he, (or I for that matter) will never forget.1 point

I see a lot of hawks around here get chased off and harassed by gangs of crows. Maybe a crow decoy would help?1 point

I too have a 4 wheeler and I haver the owners permission to use it for work, not play. Like putting out stands and recovering a deer. I care less about them than I do poachers. Ill tell them to get out, but poachers will be prosecuted. Yes, maybe we will indeed be helping each other out with me being there and LEGAL. This kid in the message above is the one who called me. His family used to own this land. As Ive said, Im looking for someone out there to be included on my hunting lease, but they have to also be willing to do the police work for the good of the lease too. Time will tell if it will be worth it in the end. Otherwise Ill just leave town after the season with a bunch of new stands if the poachers leave them in there. We'll see....1 point

Nice to see this kind of growing support for our cause. It's apparent that people from all over the country understand just how close they all are to being in our situation.1 point

Yes, yes and hell yes. They cross roads all the time. I SHOULD have killed one yesterday 30 yards from my visible truck but he zigged and I zagged. He went across a hardtop road twice during the match, ending up as the victor. Two long hot hours of crawling, climbing and bitching........1 point

Rural noise pollution? Those of us normal people don't call it noise pollution to begin with - that's most certainly a yuppy term, like assault rifle. The country has chainsaws, 18 wheelers, tractors, dogs, mowers, skidders, fertilizer trucks, bonfires and the associated noises, as well as guns, air drills, hammers, etc. and so on and so forth. I have a damn pair of goats cornering up behind my property and I hear them every morning. I supposed I could complain about that pollution as it riles up my dogs when they hear them. But you know what? I'm not a walking va-j, I live in a rural area and expect such sounds to take place. If I were living in the ciy again, I'd expect thumping stereos in passing cars, people yelling at all hours of the day/night, etc. It is what it is. Certainly better than dealing with city-related sounds and the supposed whackos that complain about "noise pollution."1 point

and that is the reason we have to continue to do whatever possible to get the word out and educate gun owners and non-gun owners alike. I will bet that many on this forum have already learned a lot that they didn't know about the 2nd amendment and the attack on it and how important it can be to the rest of the Constitution. I say keep talking until everyone listens.1 point

Exactly. Anyone who is really in this realizes this fight is not about guns. it is about all our rights. History shows with several instances, but the biggest being nazi Germany is that once the govt controls the guns, they take away all and will do so with force. This fight is also not about the safe act in NY. It is about the entire country watching us to see how we react and to see how far they can push in other states and the entire country. That is the reality of it. Either we stand against it in November, or we just roll over now. Either message will ring across the nation next year. Now do I think that if we get Astorino into office in January that the safe act will be repealed in January. Oh hell no. It took years to get to this point and it will take years to turn it around. He or any other candidate can run saying they will repeal it. You need the bill sent to you to be able to do so. There are several who need to go before that is even a possibility. But we need to start somewhere. And if we do not start to turn it around now, we never will. There is already legislation sitting waiting for the outcome of the election. For instance with the new ny compliant ar's they will introduce legislation next January to make every semi automatic firearm an assault weapon and any military type action such as a mauser or nagant sniper rifles which will be added to the list. If you think they will not push forward with more restrictions and controls, you are very much mistaken. If you choose to keep the oh they are not coming after my hunting rifle, think again. If you own an 1100 or a 7400 remington or any semi auto handgun, they are already preparing to come after them.. And the sad part is if they make the list, you can not pass them on to a family member. They go to the state same as ar's have to now when you pass. Sounds a little like confiscation to me. If you are willing ot take that chance fine. I am not without a fight Call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever. I get this information first hand from an assembly person who is close to all this fight also. Once they have the guns, they own us. The second protects the rest. Lead follow or get out of the way.1 point
